Teenage/Adolescent pregnancies continue to pose numerous health and socio-economic setbacks in our urban and rural communities. The negative consequences include:
1. Interrupted learning where the expectant teen/adolescent is forced to drop-out of formal education hence cutting short her schooling.
2. Complications during childbirth since their immature reproductive organs cannot sustain the impact. This might even end up in child mortality or maternal mortality.
3. Promotion of the vicious cycle of poverty since the young child-bearing teen/adolescent cannot qualify for formal employment hence become completely dependent upon their struggling guardians/parents.
4. Postpartum depression can set in if the immediate family/community is not supportive either emotionally or psychologically.
5. Stigma and discrimination by other community members who feel that the young mothers do not deserve a space to participate as fellow parents in community engagements.
