Meet Tony Kimanzi, a painter at the Funyula Affordable Housing Project in Busia County, whose journey shows how the Affordable Housing Programme is creating opportunities that are changing lives.

Before joining the project, Tony was struggling with unemployment in Nairobi and did not have a house of his own. An opportunity came when a friend told him about work available in Busia, and he decided to make the move.

Since joining the project, Tony’s life has changed. With a stable source of income, he has been able to get a new home, support his family and provide for his parents. The opportunity has also helped him grow professionally. Having previously painted only small buildings, Tony has now gained experience and confidence in painting tall multi-storey buildings.

Tony encourages anyone who gets an opportunity at the site to give their best, work hard and remain committed, noting that with determination, better days are possible.

Today, Principal Secretary for Housing and Urban Development Charles Hinga and Affordable Housing Board CEO Joe Mutugu paid a courtesy call to the Governor of Uasin Gishu County ahead of their two-day inspection tour of ongoing Affordable Housing Programme projects across the county.

The engagement provided an opportunity to strengthen collaboration between the national and county governments as they continue working together to support the delivery of quality, affordable, and dignified housing for Kenyans.

As part of the two-day inspection tour, the delegation will assess the progress of ongoing projects, review construction milestones, and engage with stakeholders involved in advancing the Affordable Housing Programme in Uasin Gishu County.

The visit highlights the Government’s commitment to accelerating housing delivery, creating employment opportunities, and supporting the development of sustainable communities through the Affordable Housing Programme.

At the Funyula Affordable Housing Project in Busia County, Caleb Wesonga's journey is a testament to the life-changing impact of decent and reliable employment through the Affordable Housing Programme. Working as a steel fabricator, he manufactures the windows and doors used in the project, earning a stable income that has transformed his family's future.

Before joining the project, Caleb depended on casual labour, never knowing whether he would have work the following day. The uncertainty made it difficult to provide for his family, pay school fees, or even put food on the table. Today, that has changed. With steady employment, his children are able to attend school without being sent home for fees, and his family now enjoys greater financial security.

The opportunity has also enabled Caleb to uplift others in his community. He has brought 20 men from his village to work on the project, helping them earn an income and improve the lives of their own families.

Caleb also applauds the development for introducing modern multi-storey housing to the area. He believes the project will not only enhance the appearance of Funyula but also create opportunities for more people, especially those who have never experienced such developments in their community.
