Yesterday, the National Youth Service, led by the Commandant General James K. Tembur, MBS, proudly joined His Excellency President Dr. William Samoei Ruto, thousands of Kenyans, and esteemed guests at Ithookwe Stadium in Kitui County to commemorate this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations

This important national day is a time to honour the brave men and women whose unwavering courage, sacrifice, and selfless service have shaped the course of our nation’s journey from independence to the present day.

The celebrations were elevated by the presence of distinguished guests, H.E. Bassirou Diomaye Faye, President of the Republic of Senegal and H.E. Maria Benvinda Levy, Prime Minister of the Republic of Mozambique. They shared goodwill messages in honour of Kenya’s heroes and their tribute to the legacy of the late Rt. Hon. Raila Amollo Odinga, former Prime Minister of the Republic of Kenya.

As NYS, we stand inspired by the spirit of our Mashujaa—past and present—and we reaffirm our dedication to national unity, service, and youth empowerment.

Let us all strive to be heroes in our own ways, through service and patriotism.

As the recruits pass out, many rush to dismiss NYS, calling it a waste of time—claiming that after service, suffering awaits outside. But I challenge such naysayers.

NYS is not just a program; it is a foundation of discipline, resilience, exposure, and opportunity that shapes a person for life. It instils basic paramilitary skills, fuels the pride of serving your nation, and—most importantly—opens the door to pursue your dream course, your true gateway to the world.

The destiny of a person does not rest on human opinion but on God’s plan. What man limits, God ordains. And His plan always prevails.

To the serving and ex-NYS members: stand tall, stand proud. For when one of us rises to greatness, what will the doubters say then?
