The Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA) today concludes its Stakeholders’ Public Engagement and Dissemination Forum on the 2024/2025 TVET Quality Audit Report, bringing together key actors committed to advancing quality, accountability, and excellence in technical and vocational education and training.

Building on the success of the opening day, the forum has attracted participants from the Ministry of Education, National Government Administration Officers (NGAOs), county governments, State agencies, National Polytechnics, Technical and Vocational Colleges (TVCs), Vocational Training Centres (VTCs), and other strategic partners from across the country.

Officially opening the forum, the Chief Guest, TVET Secretary Joseph Njau, representing the Principal Secretary for TVET Dr. Esther Muoria, underscored the critical role of quality audits in driving institutional excellence and continuous improvement. He also highlighted the ongoing reforms transforming Kenya’s TVET sector into a more responsive, industry-driven, and globally competitive system.

The opening ceremony also featured remarks from Taita Taveta County Executive Committee Member for Education and VTCs Gloria Monikombo, Taita Taveta County Commissioner Linda Okola, and TVETA Board Chairperson Prof. Kellen Kiambati, all of whom reaffirmed the importance of collaboration in strengthening quality skills development.
Participants were taken through detailed presentations of the audit findings covering National Polytechnics, Technical and Vocational Colleges, and Vocational Training Centres. The discussions examined institutional performance across key quality pillars, including Leadership, Governance and Management; Human Resources; Physical Resources; Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Cooperation; Training Delivery; Programme Evaluation; and Trainee Support Services.

The interactive sessions generated robust discussions, with stakeholders raising pertinent questions and offering practical recommendations to enhance quality assurance and institutional performance. Issues requiring further action have been referred to the relevant offices for follow-up.

At 63, She Chose to Learn a Skill. Her Story Is a Powerful Reminder That It’s Never Too Late.

During a visit by the TVETA Board and staff to Mlambenyi Vocational Training Centre in Taita Taveta County, one learner quietly stood out among the class.

Seated at the back of a garment-making workshop was 63-year-old grandmother Gaudencia Mwamshuru, studying alongside trainees young enough to be her grandchildren. But while generations separated them in age, they shared one common purpose: acquiring skills for a better future.

When TVETA Board Chairperson Prof. Kellen Kiambati asked what inspired her to return to the classroom, Gaudencia’s answer was both simple and profound.

“I enrolled in the Garment Making Grade III course because I want practical skills to start a tailoring business in my village. Opportunities are limited where I live, and with these skills I can repair and make clothes for my community, earn an income, support my family, and educate my children.”

Her determination is a powerful reminder that learning has no age limit and that skills can transform lives at any stage.

At TVETA, we believe that technical and vocational education is not just about qualifications—it is about creating opportunities, restoring dignity, and empowering individuals to build sustainable livelihoods. Whether you are 18 or 63, acquiring practical skills can open new doors and inspire lasting change for families and communities alike.

Gaudencia’s story challenges us all to ask: If she can pursue a new dream at 63, what is stopping the rest of us from investing in our own potential?

In TVET, it is never too late to learn, never too late to grow, and never too late to change your future.

TVETA Launches 2024/2025 Quality Audit Report to Drive Excellence in TVET

The Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA) today commenced a two-day Stakeholders’ Engagement and Dissemination Forum for the 2024/2025 TVET Quality Audit Report at Taita Taveta National Polytechnic in Voi.

The event marks a significant milestone in advancing quality assurance, accountability, and continuous improvement across Kenya’s TVET sector.

Hosted by the TVETA Board of Directors and Management under the leadership of Board Chairperson Prof. Kelllen Kiambati and Ag. Director General Timothy Nyongesa Katiambo, the forum brings together key stakeholders from national and county governments, regulatory agencies, industry, and training institutions.

The event will be graced by the Principal Secretary for TVET, Dr. Esther Muoria, and attended by the National Government Administration Secretary, the Director of Technical Education, County Executive Committee Members and Chief Officers from Taita Taveta County, representatives of KATTI and KENAPCO, more than 20 County Commissioners, managers of Vocational Training Centres, and other sector leaders.

The 2024/2025 Quality Audit Report provides a comprehensive assessment of the health, effectiveness, and responsiveness of Kenya’s TVET institutions. It offers valuable insights into achievements made, identifies existing challenges, and highlights opportunities for strengthening the delivery of quality, market-driven skills training.

During the 2024/2025 Financial Year, TVETA conducted quality audits in 354 institutions across 29 counties, comprising 15 National Polytechnics, 41 Public Technical and Vocational Colleges, 95 Private Technical and Vocational Colleges, and 203 Vocational Training Centres. The institutions were selected from the accredited register and assessed by multidisciplinary teams of trained auditors using a rigorous quality audit framework.

The audits evaluated performance across seven key pillars: Leadership, Management and Governance; Physical Resources; Human Resources; Training Delivery; Programme Evaluation; Trainee Support Services; and Innovation, Research and Cooperation. These indicators provide a holistic picture of institutional performance and inform evidence-based policy and regulatory interventions.

The findings reveal encouraging progress across the sector, with average performance scores of 78% for National Polytechnics, 65% for Public Technical and Vocational Colleges, and 51% for Private Technical and Vocational Colleges. While these results demonstrate significant gains, they also underscore the need for sustained efforts to raise standards and strengthen institutional capacity.

Beyond measuring compliance, the quality audits play a critical role in identifying emerging risks, understanding operational challenges, promoting accountability, and providing practical recommendations that drive continuous improvement. They reinforce TVETA’s commitment to building a TVET system that is innovative, responsive to labour market needs, and globally competitive.

Importantly, the audit process extends beyond publication of the report. Every institution received a detailed feedback report outlining areas of strength, identifying gaps requiring attention, and providing specific corrective recommendations to support ongoing quality enhancement.

Through this engagement, TVETA reaffirms its dedication to working with stakeholders to strengthen standards, safeguard learners' interests, and ensure that technical and vocational education remains a key driver of Kenya’s economic transformation and sustainable development.

TVETA Engages Kitui County Leadership on Quality Audit Findings to Strengthen Vocational Training

As part of the nationwide dissemination of the 2024/2025 TVET Quality Audit Report, TVETA Acting Director General Timothy Nyongesa Katiambo, accompanied by Board Directors Dr. Esther Gacicio and Njambi Muchane, today paid a courtesy call on H.E. Dr. Julius Malombe, Governor of Kitui County.

The high-level engagement brought together County Executive Committee Members, Chief Officers, and senior county officials to discuss the findings and recommendations of the latest quality audit on Vocational Training Centres (VTCs) in Kitui County. TVETA officers, led by Phoebe Maganga and James Muli, presented key insights from the report and outlined priority areas for improvement aimed at enhancing the quality, relevance, and effectiveness of vocational training.

The discussions culminated in a strong commitment from the County Government to implement strategies that will strengthen training standards, improve learning environments, and expand opportunities for young people pursuing technical and vocational education.

The delegation later visited Syongila Vocational Training Centre for a benchmarking tour, where they also participated in a tree-planting exercise in support of environmental sustainability. The day concluded with a consultative engagement involving managers of all 52 Vocational Training Centres in Kitui County, providing a platform to discuss challenges, share best practices, and chart a collaborative path toward continuous quality improvement. The County Executive Committee Member responsible for Education led the county delegation during the engagements.

TVETA remains committed to working closely with county governments and stakeholders to strengthen quality assurance, promote excellence in skills development, and build a TVET system that equips learners with competencies for employment, innovation, and national development.
