Giving Nanyuki a New Face: Groundbreaking of the Modern Nanyuki Bus Park.

The County Government of Laikipia has taken a significant step towards transforming Nanyuki into a modern, vibrant and economically dynamic urban centre following the groundbreaking of the Nanyuki Bus Park by H.E. the Governor.

The long-awaited project being implemented by the Nanyuki Municipality with funding from the World Bank under the Kenya Urban Support Programme; is set to transform Nanyuki town by giving it a new face through improvement of urban infrastructure while enhancing mobility, service delivery, cleanliness, security and offering broader business opportunities within the town. The modern bus park will provide a more condusive, organized and efficient operating environment for matatus, Sacco operators, traders and travellers.

With an investment of KSh. 60 million, the project which is expected to take atleast 6months to it's completion will generate employment opportunities particularly for the youth, while stimulating economic activity and improving the flow of resources within Nanyuki and the wider county.

The modern facility will include 24-hour surveillance, dedicated spaces for travellers, an exclusive ablution block and improved facilities for public transport operators and businesses. In its first phase, 48 shops will be accomodated within the modern one-storey building, proving a well-organized, accessible and condusive environment for traders and customers, Saccos will also enjoy permanent offices for their day to day operations within the new development.

As one of Laikipia's key tourism and commercial centres, Nanyuki serves as an important gateway to neighbouring counties and major tourist destinations within the region. The improved bus park will therefore benefit not only Nanyuki residents but also travellers, businesses, tourists and the wider Laikipia economy.

The development is also expected to contribute to the establishment of a 24-hour economy, creating an enabling environment for businesses to operate for longer hours and positioning Nanyuki for continued growth towards city status.

Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony, H.E. Governor Joshua Irungu, EGH, described the project as one of his key aspirations and a lasting legacy for present and future generations.

The project further demonstrates the importance of municipal governance and public participation, which enables residents to identify and prioritize development projects that directly respond to their needs while driving economic transformation in our urban centres.

Laikipia County Advances Solarisation of Street Lighting.

The County Government of Laikipia, through the Department of Lands, Physical Planning and Energy, has embarked on an ambitious programme to solarise street lighting across the County, reaffirming its commitment to improving public safety, security and the business environment in our urban centres.

Adequate and reliable street lighting plays a critical role in enhancing security for residents and businesses while creating safer conditions for motorists, pedestrians and travellers transiting through our towns and trading centres.

The transition to solar-powered street lighting will provide a more sustainable, reliable and cost-effective lighting solution, while reducing the challenges associated with conventional electricity supply, including power outages and technical interruptions that can affect the continuity of street lighting services.

Today, ressidents of Kwa Mwaura in Umande Ward have a reason to celebrate as they benefit fom this programme. The improved lighting will enhance security, support evening business activities and provide safer movement for residents and other road users.

This initiative forms part of the County Government’s broader commitment to ensuring that safe, well-lit and vibrant urban centres remain a priority. Reliable street lighting will support extended and more secure business hours, improve mobility and contribute to increased economic activity and investment across Laikipia.

Periodic road maintenance using county-owned machinery commenced early this month across Nanyuki Ward marking the beginning of the FY 2026/2027 works.

Several roads have already been rehabilitated and improved, making them more accessible and safer while easing movement for pedestrians, motorists and the area residents.

This ongoing efforts continues to reflect the governments commitment to improving road infrastructure, enhancing connectivity and making mobility easier for all.

MUNICIPAL TRANSFORMATION: POWERING URBAN GROWTH, SERVICE DELIVERY AND ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY IN LAIKIPIA.

Among the many developments and achievements realized across various departments of the County Government under the leadership of H.E Joshua Irungu EGH over the past four years, the creation and operationalization of municipalities stands out as a transformative milestone under the Directorate of Lands, Physical Planning, Housing and Urban Development.

The establishment and conferment of municipal status to Nanyuki and Nyahururu in the period 2023–2025, alongside the earlier operationalization of Rumuruti Municipality, brings the total number of municipalities in the county to three (3). This achievement aligns with the provisions of the Urban Areas and Cities Act, which provides the legal framework for the classification, governance and management of urban areas. The creation of these municipalities was informed by key criteria including population thresholds, economic viability, availability of infrastructure, and their strategic role as growth centres within the approved Laikipia County Spatial Plan (2023–2033). Their establishment marks a deliberate shift towards structured urban governance and sustainable urban development.

Municipalities are empowered to make decisions that directly respond to the needs of their communities and to implement policies and programmes that promote effective service delivery and local development. This greater decision-making authority enables communities to participate more meaningfully in identifying, determining and addressing their development priorities, while also strengthening accountability and responsiveness in governance. Municipalities play a central role in providing basic public services, including public safety, sanitation and infrastructure, while promoting economic development through partnerships with the County Government and other stakeholders to address urban challenges.

Municipalities perform critical functions that directly influence urban growth and service delivery, including the provision and maintenance of infrastructure such as roads, drainage and public spaces, the management of solid waste and sanitation services, the promotion of local economic development and investment, the enforcement of development regulations and standards, and the enhancement of public participation in governance. Through these integrated functions, municipalities serve as the primary platforms for coordinating urban development and ensuring orderly, planned growth.

A key benefit of municipal establishment is access to funds through the Kenya Urban Support Programme. Through the Urban Development Grant (UDG), municipalities receive conditional funding to support the improvement of infrastructure such as roads, non-motorized transport facilities, drainage systems and street lighting. For Nanyuki and Rumuruti Municipalities, UDG funding has significantly improved the County’s ability to implement priority urban investments such as the development of the Nanyuki Modern Bus Park and the tarmacking of the Kiambiriria Road in Rumuruti, demonstrating tangible progress in urban infrastructure and mobility.

The impact of municipalization on development and service delivery is already evident through improved coordination and faster decision-making at the local level, enhanced delivery of essential services such as waste management and road maintenance, increased community participation in planning and budgeting processes, strengthened enforcement of development control measures, and the growing attraction of public and private investments driven by improved urban governance structures.
Under the visionary leadership of H.E Joshua Irungu EGH, the newly established municipalities of Nanyuki and Nyahururu are envisioned to grow and progress towards city status in the near future. This vision is supported by the rapid population growth experienced in these towns, which is expected to attract increased investment, expand business opportunities, create employment and stimulate greater economic activity.

The creation and development of these municipalities therefore represents a strong foundation for sustainable urbanization and economic transformation. With continued investment through programmes such as the Kenya Urban Support Programme (KUSP), strengthened governance systems, and adherence to planning frameworks, Nanyuki, Rumuruti and Nyahururu have the potential to become vibrant urban centres and, ultimately, cities that offer greater opportunities for residents, businesses and investors while contributing significantly to the overall development of the county.

Strengthening GIS Capacity for Better Land Governance and Service Delivery.

Saturday marked the successful conclusion of a three-day GIS Champions Training held at the County GIS Laboratory in Nanyuki under the EU-FAO-funded Digital Land Governance Programme (DLGP).

The training was organized in collaboration with the Council of Governors (CoG), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), County Governments, and other key partners, reflecting a shared commitment to strengthening digital land governance and promoting the effective use of geospatial technologies across Kenya’s counties.

The training focused on building the capacity of county officers and technical teams in geospatial information management, digital land governance, and data-driven decision-making.

Participants who were county officers from across various department and other technical officers were equipped with practical knowledge and skills in the collection, management, analysis and dissemination of spatial data to support informed planning, evidence-based policy formulation, efficient resource management, and improved service delivery.

By strengthening the role and capacity of the GIS Champions within county governments, the programme will promote greater collaboration and integration of spatial information across departments, while encouraging the use of reliable and timely data in addressing development challenges.

The initiative is an important step towards strengthening institutional capacity in land administration and management, ultimately contributing to more efficient, transparent, informed, and sustainable development across Kenya’s counties.

INCEPTION MEETING LAUNCHES PREPARATION OF ZONING PLANS FOR KOIJA, MORUPUSI AND LEKURUKI COMMUNITY LANDS

Today, the County Government, in collaboration with key stakeholders and development partners, officially launched the preparation of Local Physical and Land Use Development (Zoning) Plans for Koija, Morupusi, and Lekuruki Community Lands in Mukogodo West and Mukogodo East Wards during an inception meeting held at Jaqanaz Resort.

The planning process aims to promote sustainable land use, orderly development, environmental conservation, and improved management of natural resources while safeguarding community interests and cultural heritage.

The meeting brought together representatives from the National Government Department of Physical Planning, National Land Commission (NLC), Laikipia Conservancies Association (LCA), Wyss Academy, National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), Kenya Forest Service (KFS), County Government technical teams, and community representatives from the three community lands.

Discussions focused on the planning methodology, legal and policy framework, stakeholder roles, timelines, and the importance of adopting a participatory approach to ensure the zoning plans reflect local priorities and development aspirations.

The zoning plans will provide a framework to:
✅ Guide sustainable settlement and infrastructure development
✅ Promote environmental conservation and natural resource management
✅ Support livestock production, tourism, and other economic activities
✅ Coordinate development in line with the Laikipia County Spatial Plan
✅ Enhance community livelihoods through planned and sustainable land use

Stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the planning process through technical expertise, data sharing, and active participation. The meeting also reached consensus on undertaking field assessments, stakeholder consultations, and community engagement forums across the three community lands.

The next phase of the exercise will involve data collection, field reconnaissance, community consultations, and preparation of draft zoning plans for stakeholder review and public participation.

This initiative marks an important step towards achieving sustainable development, environmental stewardship, and improved livelihoods for the communities of Koija, Morupusi, and Lekuruki.

PUBLIC PARTICIPATION MEETING FOR THE NANYUKI MUNICIPALITY ZONING PLAN 2026–2036

Today, the Nanyuki Municipality under the Directorate of Lands convened a consultative meeting with property owners within Nanyuki Municipality as part of the ongoing public participation process towards the preparation of the Nanyuki Municipality Zoning Plan 2026–2036.

The meeting brought together stakeholders from various sectors with the objective of collecting views, recommendations, and concerns that will inform the formulation of the zoning plan aimed at guiding sustainable urban growth and development within the municipality.

According to available records, the current Nanyuki Municipality Development Plan dates back to the year 1991. Since then, the municipality has experienced significant demographic, economic, and infrastructural growth, resulting in increased demand for organized land use planning and development control measures.

Recent surveys conducted in the previous year indicate that Nanyuki Municipality currently has an estimated population of approximately 85,000 residents. Projections further indicate that the population is expected to grow substantially over the next decade, necessitating the establishment of modern zoning regulations and development frameworks to accommodate future urban expansion.

The public participation exercise seeks to ensure that residents, property owners, investors, and other stakeholders contribute to the planning process and provide input on matters affecting land use, infrastructure, housing, commercial development, environmental conservation, and public amenities.

The proposed Nanyuki Municipality Zoning Plan 2026–2036 is expected to establish:

1) Development and permitting standards.
2) Land use regulations.
3) Planning guidelines.
4) Controlled development frameworks.
5) Mechanisms for organized urban growth and neighborhood planning.

Upon completion and implementation, the zoning plan is anticipated to:

1) Promote orderly and sustainable urban development.
2) Enhance service delivery and infrastructure planning.
3) Encourage controlled and compliant developments.
4) Reduce land use conflicts within the municipality.
5) Improve environmental management and conservation.
6) Support the municipality’s long-term socio-economic growth objectives.

The plan will further provide a framework for creating organized neighborhoods capable of accommodating the municipality’s projected population growth while preserving public interests and enhancing investment opportunities.

The Directorate of Lands reaffirmed its commitment to inclusive planning and stakeholder engagement throughout the zoning plan preparation process. Stakeholders were encouraged to continue participating in subsequent forums and submit additional views that will contribute towards the successful development of the Nanyuki Municipality Zoning Plan 2026–2036.
