Through the National Agricultural Value Chain Development Project (NAVCDP), we have intensified efforts to strengthen agricultural value chains by training Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), extension officers, and Value Chain Platform leaders on the responsible use of agrochemicals, post-harvest management, and value addition.

The capacity-building program was conducted in collaboration with experts from the Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Service - Kephis, the Pest Control Products Board and Aak-GROW/CropLife Kenya.

The training is aimed at promoting safe and effective agricultural practices, reducing post-harvest losses, enhancing product quality, and increasing value addition across Navcdp SIAYA. -supported value chains of rice, apiculture, cotton, tomatoes, and poultry.

By strengthening technical knowledge and improving handling practices along the value chains, this intervention directly advances NAVCDP’s objective of enhancing value addition and promoting increased market participation for smallholder farmers. The initiative is expected to improve productivity, market competitiveness, and incomes for farmers while supporting the sustainable development of agricultural value chains across Siaya County.

Today, we broke ground for the construction of the Enhanced Siriwo Rice Processing and Marketing Facility in Usonga Ward, a major investment aimed at strengthening rice value addition, improving storage capacity, and enhancing market access for farmers.

The KSh 40 million project will involve the construction of a modern rice store, a paddy store, and solarization works to support efficient processing and marketing operations. The project is expected to be completed within the next six months.

This investment complements the County Government's continued upgrading of the Siriwo Rice Mill, a facility into which millions of shillings have been invested over the years as part of a deliberate effort to position Siaya as a regional hub for rice production, processing, and marketing. These interventions are already bearing fruit, with Siriwo rice products steadily penetrating local markets and gaining consumer confidence.

Once complete, the enhanced facility will significantly reduce post-harvest losses, improve the quality and competitiveness of rice products, and create better market opportunities for local farmers, thereby boosting incomes and livelihoods across the rice value chain.

The function was graced by County Secretary Ms. Elizabeth Adongo, CECM for Agriculture Hon. Willis Ochieng, Area MCA Hon. Sylvester Madialo, and Chairperson of the County Assembly of Siaya Agriculture Committee, Hon. Fredrick Omoro.

We have intensified Sustainable Land Management (SLM) trainings to farmers across the six sub-counties of Siaya, to strengthen climate-smart agriculture practices at the community level. The ongoing trainings are aimed at enhancing resilience to climate change while promoting sustainable use of land and natural resources for improved agricultural productivity.

Through the sessions, participants are being equipped with practical knowledge and skills in key areas such as agroforestry, soil and water conservation, water harvesting technologies, and the development of community land management plans. Farmers are also learning sustainable farming approaches that help restore soil fertility, reduce land degradation, and improve water retention for increased farm productivity.

The initiative, is expected to play a significant role in promoting environmental conservation and sustainable food production across the county. By empowering communities with climate-smart agricultural practices, we continue to strengthen efforts towards building resilient farming systems, improving livelihoods, and ensuring long-term food security for future generations.
