International Primate Day 2026 | Mangar Community Conservancy & Geosite, Baringo

KIPRE, through its Conservation Division led by Dr. Stanislaus Kivai, joined the Mangar community, partners, schools & local leadership to celebrate under the theme: “Healthy Landscapes as a Living Heritage for Human & Nonhuman Primates.”

In collaboration with Primate Global Foundation, Uaso Ngiro Baboon Project, Loisaba Leopard Research, Amboseli Baboon Project, Ontulili Primate Protection, Nature Kenya, Laikipia Wildlife Forum, Colobus Conservation, NEMA, Chuka University, Friends of Karura Forest, Baringo County Conservancy Association, KEFRI & KFS Marigat stations.

The day featured conservation talks, cultural performances, school activities, beekeeping showcases & the launch of a 30,000-tree restoration initiative.

Dr. Kivai highlighted KIPRE’s primate conservation & biomedical research, including Kenya’s first locally made polyvalent antivenom.

Chief Guest Mr. Zachary Kipsang, CECM for Tourism, Baringo County, pledged collaboration and support. Speakers renewed hope for the recovery of the Eastern Patas monkey, with fewer than 300 individuals in Kenya.

Through KIPRE’s Committee on Gender and Persons with Disabilities, schools also received sanitary towels to support menstrual hygiene.

Together, communities, researchers, schools & conservation partners can restore landscapes and safeguard wildlife for generations.

It's a wrap on the inaugural #𝐊𝐞𝐧𝐲𝐚𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐒𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭! 🇰🇪

Two days of candid conversation at KICC came to a close today, capped by a Presidential Town Hall where Kenyans themselves took the floor, sharing what the ongoing health reforms mean for their homes, counties and communities.

For KIPRE, the closing day was a reminder of why locally-led science matters: the solutions discussed in these halls, from strengthening primary care to expanding specialised services, will only take root if backed by research grounded in Kenya's own realities.

We leave the Summit energised by the commitments made and the partnerships strengthened, and remain dedicated to playing our part in the country's journey toward Universal Health Coverage.

Congratulations to the The Ministry of Health and all who made this inaugural Summit a success. The work continues.

Kenya Institute of Primate Research is proud to have joined top leadership, researchers, and sector partners at the KICC in Nairobi for the 𝐊𝐞𝐧𝐲𝐚 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐒𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭, held under the theme “𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐬 𝐃𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝, 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐑𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭.”
Officially opened by H.E. President William Ruto and hosted by Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale, this inaugural event brings together The Ministry of Health, county governments, international agencies and biomedical institutions to chart a unified path toward Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

As KIPRE, we're proud that our work, from homegrown snakebite antivenom development to malaria research, One Health surveillance and cancer research, feeds directly into the specialised locally-driven healthcare solutions the Health Summit is championing.

The Ministry of Health, through the State Department for Medical Services, in partnership with the Busia County Government, held a medical camp at Lugulu Primary School, bringing together government, health partners, research institutions and communities to promote accessible and responsive healthcare.

The camp was graced by Hon. Felix Koskei, EGH, Chief of Staff and Head of the Public Service and Arthur Amug Osiya, CBS, Principal Administrative Secretary, alongside county leadership and other health-sector stakeholders.

KIPRE, represented by its Board Chair, Prof. Josephat Mulimba participated in the medical camp through its Departments of Reproductive Health, One Health and Kenya Snakebite Research & Intervention Centre.

KIPRE showcased its commitment to community health through the donation of sanitary towels to support menstrual health and hygiene, alongside showcasing medically important snakes found in the region and sensitizing community members on snakebite prevention, first aid and timely referral. The team also engaged Community Health Promoters on appropriate response to snakebite emergencies.

The camp highlighted the importance of collaboration in strengthening community health, prevention and preparedness for health emergencies.
