The Wajir Regional Referral Laboratory has successfully achieved reaccreditation under the ISO 15189:2022 international standards, with certification valid until 2028.

The laboratory began its quality improvement journey in 2012 through the SLIPTA (Stepwise Laboratory Quality Improvement Process Towards Accreditation) programme, starting from a zero-star rating. Through the dedication of its staff, continuous mentorship and strong support from the County Government of Wajir and hospital management, the laboratory steadily improved and attained this significant milestone.

ISO 15189:2022 is an internationally recognized standard that confirms a medical laboratory’s technical competence and its ability to operate a quality management system that meets global requirements for patient testing and laboratory services. This accreditation demonstrates the laboratory’s commitment to quality, accuracy, patient safety, and continuous improvement in healthcare service delivery.

This achievement reflects the collective efforts, resilience and commitment of the laboratory team, hospital leadership, partners and the County Government in strengthening laboratory systems and ensuring the delivery of reliable, high-quality and internationally recognized diagnostic services to the people of Wajir and beyond.

The county government has today launched a seven-day livestock vaccination campaign aimed at protecting our animals from major diseases, including Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD), Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR),and Contagious Caprine Pleuropneumonia (CCPP).
The exercise targets the vaccination of over 200,000 sheep and goats, and 50,000 cattle across all six sub-counties in the county, as part of ongoing efforts by H.E Ahmed Abdullahi EGH to strengthen animal health services and safeguard pastoral livelihoods.
In addition to vaccinations, livestock owners will also benefit from free deworming services and treatment for weak and sick animals, as part of an integrated approach to improving herd health and productivity.
Under the subsidized E-Voucher programme, livestock owners will pay Ksh 50 per head of cattle for FMD vaccination and Ksh 3 per sheep or goat for PPR vaccination, while other vaccines and treatment drugs will be provided free of charge.
The campaign is being implemented through a joint partnership between the County Government of Wajir, the Frontier Counties Development Council (FCDC), the National Government and development partners under the Livestock Sector Strengthening Programme (LSS II) and the Food Systems Resilience Project (FSRP).

The Department of Health, in collaboration with the Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) Wajir Branch, continues to implement Risk Communication and Community Engagement (RCCE) and hygiene promotion interventions across Wajir County. These efforts focus on sensitization and distribution activities aimed at preventing cholera and other waterborne diseases.
The joint team has intensified community engagement by educating the public using Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials, with a strong emphasis on preventive measures and safe hygiene practices. Key high-risk areas reached include Orahey Market, Soko Holla, and ADC Market, where large gatherings of pastoralists and traders were observed. These populations are highly mobile, increasing their vulnerability to the spread of waterborne diseases.

As part of the intervention, a total of 3,200 strips of Aquatabs were distributed. Community members were also provided with practical guidance on proper water treatment and safe usage to ensure effectiveness.

These ongoing interventions aim to strengthen community awareness, promote sustainable behavior change, and reduce the risk of disease outbreaks within Wajir County.
