501st Military Intelligence Brigade Welcome to the official 501st Military Intelligence Brigade page! Strike With Fire! The 501st arrived at Busan on June 25, 1951.

Constituted on October 13, 1950 in the Regular Army as HHC, 501st Communication Reconnaissance Group, the unit was activated on October 20, 1950 at Camp Pickett, Virginia, and assigned to the Army Security Agency (ASA). On May 28, 1951, the 501st transferred from Camp Pickett to Camp Stoneman, California, for staging to Busan, Korea. The unit spent four days in the Busan assembly area, awaiting s

ea transportation to Inchon. The 501st arrived at Inchon on July 1, 1951. The Group headquarters moved into the war-damaged main building of the Kyonggi Middle School, Seoul, Korea. By July 15, the 501st had assumed administrative and operational control of all ASA units in Korea. By the end of hostilities in July 1953, the Group had three battalions and five companies assigned. Besides the numerous citations awarded to its subordinate units, the Group received the Meritorious Unit Commendation (July 1, 1951 to July 27, 1953), the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit citation (July 15, 1951 to April 30, 1953), and credited for participation in six campaigns. On January 28, 1956, the 501st Communications Reconnaissance Group was redesignated as HHC, 501st ASA Group. On July 1, 1965, the 501st ASA Group was inactivated and its personnel and mission transferred to the 508th USASA Group, a TDA organization, as part of a worldwide reorganization occurring within ASA to provide greater flexibility in support of tactical units. On January 1, 1978, HHC, 501st ASA Group was redesignated HHC, 501st Military Intelligence Group, and activated at Yongsan, Korea. The Group took place of the temporary 501st MI Group (Provisional), organized at Camp Coiner on April 1, 1977, as part of the major reorganization within Army Intelligence, which merged individuals disciplines into one organization. On October 16, 1986, the 501st was elevated to Brigade status under the Army of Excellence guidelines. The brigade has transitioned south from USAG Yongsan to USAG Humphreys, with detachments throughout South Korea.

The 3rd Military Intelligence Battalion celebrated the holiday season with a festive and high-spirited Holiday Party filled with laughter, food, and community. Adding a special touch to the evening, Samuel Hammington—a comedian in Korea—joined the celebration, bringing extra energy and smiles to the room. Soldiers and families enjoyed a potluck featuring dozens of dishes, showcasing the diversity and creativity of the battalion. Midway through the event, Santa made a memorable entrance on a fire truck, surprising everyone and kicking off the holiday cheer. A photo booth with Santa, along with a White Elephant gift exchange and Ugly Sweater Contest, kept the festivities going throughout the night. An unforgettable celebration that highlighted the strong bonds, morale, and holiday spirit within the 3rd MI Battalion.

Ahead of the holiday season, the 501st Military Intelligence Brigade gathered for a brigade-wide formation—marking the final formation of 2025. The formation served as a moment to reflect on a year of dedication, teamwork, and mission success. During the ceremony, coins and Army Commendation Medals were presented to Soldiers in recognition of their outstanding performance and commitment to excellence. As the brigade stood in formation one last time this year, leaders and Soldiers alike took pride in the accomplishments that defined 2025 and looked ahead with renewed motivation. The 532nd Military Intelligence Battalion kicked off the holiday season with a festive Holiday Party—and members of the 501st MI Brigade Headquarters and Headquarters Company joined in on the celebration! Soldiers enjoyed pizza, potluck dishes, and a cozy hot chocolate bar, filling the room with warmth and laughter. The party featured a lively Holiday Relay, where teams raced through challenges like wrapping gift boxes, decorating the tree, and designing their own holiday cookies. An Ugly Sweater Contest brought out everyone’s creativity, adding even more fun to the night. To top it all off, Santa himself made a surprise appearance, giving soldiers and families the chance to take photos and share a special holiday moment. The event began early in the morning as NCOs stepped off toward the summit of Wolmi Mountain, making the climb together as a symbol of unity and shared purpose. At the top, surrounded by the sweeping view of Incheon, the brigade conducted a meaningful NCOPD session, discussing leadership responsibilities, mentorship, and what it means to uphold the standards of the Corps. Following the NCOPD, the brigade proudly held its NCO Induction Ceremony at the summit—welcoming newly inducted NCOs into the ranks in a setting that highlighted both the weight and the honor of the transition. After descending the mountain, the group moved to Freedom Park, taking in the quiet, reflective atmosphere of a place deeply tied to Korea’s history. The day concluded at the Memorial Hall for the Incheon Landing Operation, where soldiers explored exhibits, videos, and historical records of the legendary landing that shaped the course of the Korean War. Before sunrise on an extremely cold morning, competitors from across the 501st Military Intelligence Brigade assembled for the Soldier, NCO, and KATUSA of the Quarter competition. Competitors began the day with a modified Army Fitness Test (AFT), pushing themselves to their limits before stepping off on a challenging ruck march. Along the route, participants rotated through technical, tactical, and medical lanes, demonstrating their ability to think clearly, adapt quickly, and perform under pressure. The final event brought competitors face-to-face with the brigade’s senior leadership as they stood before a formal board chaired by CSMs and SGMs, answering questions on leadership, Army doctrine, and military professionalism. At the end of the competition, the following individuals were selected as the winners of their respective categories:
• NCO of the Quarter: SGT Rodriguez
• Soldier of the Quarter: PFC Dawson
• KATUSA of the Quarter: SGT Yoon

The Provider Grill hosted its annual Thanksgiving Meal, bringing Soldiers and family together for one of the most anticipated dining events of the year. The morning began with a special visit from the Eighth Army Commanding General, Lieutenant General Hilbert, who joined the 501st Military Intelligence Brigade Command Team—Colonel Tinklepaugh, Lieutenant Colonel Rosario, Command Chief Warrant Officer Kohrs, and Command Sergeant Major Dawley—to serve the first wave of Soldiers. Their presence set a warm tone for the event, emphasizing gratitude, leadership, and connection across the formation. Following the opening meal service, battalion leadership from across the brigade took their places behind the serving line, accompanied by their battalion command sergeants major and company commanders, personally served traditional Thanksgiving plates to Soldiers and families. The combined participation of brigade, battalion and company leadership underscored a shared commitment to recognizing the hard work of the formation. The atmosphere was relaxed and festive, filled with conversations, photos, and a sense of community as leaders and Soldiers celebrated the holiday season together.
