💡How can better evidence help African countries make better climate choices?

Extreme heat, drought, and intense rainfall are already disrupting livelihoods, infrastructure, and food systems across Africa. Yet, with much of the continent’s future infrastructure still to be built, countries have a time-sensitive opportunity to pursue resilient, low-carbon development before climate risks and emissions become locked in.

Realising this opportunity requires reliable evidence. However, data on climate hazards, adaptation readiness, and mitigation policies remain fragmented or unavailable across many African countries.

A new report by the Global Green Growth Institute, OECD - OCDE, Sahel and West Africa Club/Club du Sahel et de l'Afrique de l'Ouest, The World Bank Group helps close these information gaps. It brings together evidence across 28 African countries representing approximately 73% of the continent’s greenhouse gas emissions.

The analysis builds on OECD’s Climate Actions and Policies Measurement Framework—the only database providing harmonized information on policy stringency, to track policy adoption and stringency over time, and the World Bank`s Adaptation and Resilience (A&R) Readiness Framework.

Africa’s food systems are at a turning point. The choices made today will shape the continent’s resilience, jobs and prosperity for decades to come.

We will be at the Africa Food Systems Forum 2026 | in Kigali, joining governments, development partners, the private sector, civil society and academia to advance investment in resilient and sustainable agri-food systems.

Under the theme “Investing in Africa’s Agri-Food Systems: Nourishing Nations, Growing Jobs, Building Resilience,” the Forum will address the intersecting challenges of climate change, food insecurity, pressure on natural resources and population growth, and the investment and partnerships needed to respond.

Our participation will include:

🔹 Breakthrough Side Event: Food Loss and Waste for Climate and Jobs, co-organized with the World Resources Institute and IKEA Foundation, exploring how reducing food loss and waste can deliver climate benefits and create economic opportunities.

🔹 High-Level Ministerial Roundtable: Transforming Food Systems in the Context of Global Conflict and Energy Crisis, examining how governments, businesses and development partners can strengthen food systems amid growing global uncertainty.

🔹 Special High-Level Roundtable: Financing the Food, Nature and Climate Nexus, focusing on how climate and nature finance can support food systems transformation across Africa.

🔹 AFS Innovation Hub Session: Reimagining Private Sector Investment in Agri-Food Systems, discussing how investment and innovation can scale sustainable solutions across food value chains.

💚 We have concluded our journey at the UN Convention to Combat Desertification's in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

Here's what we achieved together:
🔹 The signing of the Host Country Agreement ( ) with the Government of Mongolia, continuing our strong engagement after 12 years
🔹 The launch of our global project, Financing for Forests ( ), and an MoU with the National Forest Agency to advance collaboration on forest management in the country
🔹 An MoU with the Ulaanbaatar Municipality. This marks another step forward in supporting a green, climate-resilient, and people-friendly city
🔹 A co-hosted side event with CGIAR under the title "Restore Land, Restore Hope: Bridging the Science-Policy-Finance Gap for Rio Nexus Action"

We also joined several side events, engaging with partners and sharing knowledge on sustainable forest management.

We hope that the discussions held during COP17 will mark another step forward for greater collaboration on land management, not only in Mongolia, but beyond.

We continue to advance our shared vision for climate resilience, ambitious climate action, and innovative solutions with the Dominican Republic.

During the visit of Dr. Mallé Fofana, GGGI Deputy Executive Director, engagements with senior government counterparts and development partners explored opportunities to mobilize sustainable finance, accelerate blue and green investments, strengthen institutional capacity, and turn national priorities into concrete investment opportunities.

Dr. Fofana also held meetings with key partners to discuss opportunities for continued collaboration. These conversations included Brendan Sutton, Ambassador of Canada to the Dominican Republic, Raúl Fuentes Milani, Ambassador and Head of the Delegation of the European Union to the Dominican Republic, and Lim Baejin, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to the Dominican Republic.

Since 2023, we have partnered with the Dominican Republic to catalyze green investment, strengthen policy frameworks, and build institutional capacity, supporting progress in sustainable energy, resilient infrastructure, and green jobs.

🏔️ Land degradation affects many parts of our ecosystem, and there is a strong economic need to restore land.

Together with CGIAR, we co-hosted a side event, "Restore Land, Restore Hope: Bridging the Science-Policy-Finance Gap for Rio Nexus Action," at the UN Convention to Combat Desertification's .

During the session, we highlighted the need for practical financing to bridge the science-policy-finance gap. We shared regional experiences and emphasized the importance of connecting country priorities with effective policies that support real investment across food, land, and water systems.

Achieving this will require strong collaboration to connect financial institutions with the countries that need investment, unlocking more opportunities and decisions that benefit both people and land restoration.

☀️ We are advancing floating solar power in the Philippines with the Korea Water Resources Corporation (K-water).

Floating solar systems use reservoirs and dams to generate renewable energy while reducing pressure on land. The cooling effect of the water can also improve power-generation efficiency, making the technology particularly relevant for island nations and countries with limited available land.

Beginning with a pre-feasibility study, we will work with K-water to advance the project and explore its potential under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.

This initiative, originally identified through the Korea Green New Deal Trust Fund, could provide a model for expanding long-term climate investment in the Philippines and other countries.
