The International Intellectual Property Training Institute (IIPTI) held a training course for teachers and officials of education ministries from four countries of Ecuador,Iraq, Peru and Senegal from June 13 through 29. The twelve participants from four countries enjoyed the opportinity to get the gist of invention education through lectures on basic concepts of IP and patents, education using STEM and TRIZ, and some G/E-learning content, followed by actual practices, which will help them build foundations for invention education in their respective countries. In addition, industrial visits and cultural excursions to Gyeongbokgung Palace in Seoul, Gyeongju Historial Areas helped deepen the participants’ understanding in Korea as well.

The International Intellectual Property Training Institute (IIPTI), in cooperation with the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO), held a training course on designs from May 20 through 24. Eighteen desing examiners and IP handling officials from fourteen countries learned about design-related issues including design related international law and introduction to Korean design protection system.

The International Intellectual Property Training Institute (IIPTI), in cooperation with the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO), held a patent law and examination course for patent examiners from March 11 through 22.
Seventeen patent experts from twelve countries learned about advanced IP systems through lectures and practices. Field trips to KIPO headquarters and Patent Court of Korea enhanced their learning experience. Furthermore, their visits to Baejae Historic Areas designated by UNESCO, helped broaden their understanding in Korean culture.

The International Intellectual Property Training Institute (hereinafter IIPTI) held the “Training Course on Patent Examination for NOIP, Viet Nam,” a training course dedicated to eight patent examiners from Viet Nam.

This course was carried out as part of 2016 Action Plan for Intellectual Property Rights Cooperation, agreed upon during the Korea-Viet Nam Heads of IP Offices.

The IIPTI has enjoyed a longer-term relationship with the NOIP, providing training courses dedicated to Vietnamese IP-handling officials and experts since 2017.

The course provided the trainees classes under the five categories of patent system of Korea and intensive examinations in the fields of chemistry and telecommunications. The on-the-job training actually have provided an opportunity for trainees to have hands-on experience of examination system of the KIPO.

Also, the trainees took a visit to Samsung Innovation Museum in Suwon, to learn about the history and achievement of electronics industry and the past and future vision of its semiconductors and disply mobile business.

The International Intellectual Property Training Institute held a training course for 19 trademark examiners from 14 different developing countries including Tanzania, Zambia, Belarus, Moldova and Georgia.

This course was carried out as part of “WIPO Korea Funds-in-Trust,” a project funded by the asset entrusted by the Korean Intellectual Property Office to the World Intellectual Property Office in 2004 to support enhancement of capacities of IP offices in the least developed countries.

The course provided the trainees with 15 different classes including an introduction to trademark system in Korea, distinctiveness and requirements for registering a trademark, and trademark appeal, trial and litigation system, with the aim to equip them with overall understanding of advanced trademark systems and the examination practices.

As part of the course, the trainees also took a visit to International Trademark Application Examination Team and the Intellectual Trial and Appeal Board of Korea Intellectual Property Office(KIPO) to learn about the work procedure of trademark examination as well as trademark-related litigations. On-the-job training(Nov.20) was provided for all trainees as well, so that they can get the hands-on training of the trademark examination practice.

The International Intellectual Property Training Institute held a training course for patent examiners from the Hubei Patent Examination Cooperation Center of China from October 16 through 19 in Daejeon.

It marks the second year of this annual course, officially launched in 2016 driven by the IIPTI’s sending lecturers to Hubei Center in 2015.

The course provided the trainees with four different classes including an introduction to Korea’s intellectual property system, as well as its patent examiner training and instruction system. The trainees also had opportunities to visit Korea Invention Promotion Association (KIPA) and Korea Intellectual Property Protection Agency (KOIPA) to learn about their roles and histories.

The International Intellectual Property Training Institute (IIPTI) held a training course for IP officials from developing countries from August 31 through September 20, 2017.
The “KOICA Training Course on Intellectual Property Right” is a training course that has been operated by the IIPTI jointly with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) since 2012.
The training course included lectures and discussions on 14 different topics such as patent and trademark system in Korea, technology transfer, IPRs in the era of 4th industrialization, and a session allowing the participants to set up and present Action Plans for their countries to advance their IP system.
The trainees also had chances to take industry and cultural excursions around the country, such as Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology (DGIST), Hyundai Motors, Yongin Folk Village and Gyeongju Historic Areas to enhance their understanding on current status of Korea’s science and technology, industrial development and traditional culture.

The International Intellectual Property Training Institute (hereinafter IIPTI) opened the ‘WIPO-Korea Summer School on IP’ for two weeks from July 10 to 21. The program attended to 26 participants from 13 countries who were undergraduates, graduate students and graduates who had just started their careers in law or IP.

‘Summer School on IP’ is a WIPO’s annual global human resources development program started in 1998, taking place in countries like Switzerland and the United States, providing IP training for university students and career beginners worldwide. And the IIPTI has been holding its ‘WIPO-Korea Summer School on IP’ every summer since 2008, two years after its designation as a WIPO partner institution in 2006.

This year, the Summer School has presented young non-expert participants an opportunity to raise their awareness and expand their understanding of IP, by exploring 34 IP-related themes, namely current issues, dispute cases and global trends of patents, trademarks, designs and copyrights, etc. The program also opened an avenue for participants to build up a network with their international counterparts who share the common interest in IP as a field of potential career.

The IIPTI held the ‘WIPO Workshop on examination in the PCT national phase’, from July 3 to 7, hosting 16 patent examiners from developing countries.

The workshop was operated as part of Korea Trust Fund meeting the demand of developing countries to enhance their international search capacities.
Providing lectures on ten topics including ‘Challenges of PCT International and National Phases’ and ‘Family Patent’ the IIPTI helped reinforcing capacities of patent examiners from LDCs under the PCT system.

IIPTI held ‘WIPO Asia-Pacific Regional Conference’, hosting 22 university chancellors, vice-chancellors and Technology Transfer Center heads in the region, from June 21 to 23.

Since 1987, this Conference has been the IIPTI’s annual event co-hosted by World Intellectual Property Office (hereinafter WIPO) featuring major issues of the day.

Held under the theme, ‘Creating Environment Guaranteeing IP for Technology Development, Management and Commercialization.’ the Conference this year focused on presentations followed by discussions on impact and commercialization of Technology Transfer. A noteworthy feature of the conference this year was superb faculty members from prestigious universities including Cornell and Oxford, who provided quality lectures and stimulating perspectives throughout each session.

The Conference served as an opportunity for participants to explore current domestic Technology Transfer issues, too. Experts from eminent organizations including Korea university and Presidential Council on Intellectual Property played a key role in guiding the participants to Technology Transfer issues home and abroad.

International Intellectual Property Office ran “WIPO-KIPO Training Course on Patent Act and Examination” from May 15 to 26.

This course was carried out as part of WIPO Korea Funds-in-Trust which marks its 13th year this year. The course helped patent examiners from developing countries understand the overall patent examination procedure and advanced patent system by covering 13 themes including basis of patent examination, substantive examination and patent search strategies.

Furthermore, the course included fieldtrips to Korean Intellectual Property Office and Patent Court of Koreat to briefly show where and how the patent-related trials are conducted. During the course, the IIPTI also ran the OJT program for each trainee to allow them to learn the examination procedure by experience.
