It's been more than 25 years since the Cayman Islands pension framework had a comprehensive review. Recently, the Ministry brought industry representatives together to begin changing that.

Acting Minister for Caymanian Employment & Immigration the Hon. Julie Hunter welcomed participants to early consultation sessions on pension reform, a pivotal opportunity to help Caymanians build greater financial security and retire with dignity.

Amy Wolliston, Deputy Director (Pensions) of the Department of Labour and Pensions, delivered the technical presentation on the proposed changes and the critical need for reform.

⚠️ Fall Prevention Saves Lives

Falls are a leading cause of serious injuries and can sometimes be fatal. Common fall hazards on construction sites include roof work, ladders, scaffolds, open floor holes and unprotected edges.

Help prevent falls by:

✅ Using the appropriate fall-protection system
✅ Inspecting ladders before use
✅ Installing guardrails
✅ Wearing a personal fall-arrest system
✅ Covering and securing floor openings

Fall-protection equipment may include full-body harnesses, lanyards, anchor points, guardrails and safety nets.

Remember: The OSH Construction Regulations require fall protection when working at heights of 6 feet or more. This is a legal requirement.

Connecting with the Team: Acting Minister Julie Hunter visits the Department of Labour & Pensions

On Monday, 3 August 2026, the Department of Labour & Pensions (DLP) was pleased to welcome Acting Minister for Caymanian Employment & Immigration Julie Hunter, accompanied by Chief Officer Mr. Wesley Howell and Chief Human Resources Manager Mrs. Briana Ebanks, for a visit to DLP.

The visit began with a meeting with the Department's Senior Management Team, including Director Mr. Bennard Ebanks, Deputy Director of Pensions Ms. Amy Wolliston, Head of Inspections Mr. Gene Hydes, and Acting Deputy Director of Labour Ms. Elizabeth McIntosh.

Following the meeting, the Acting Minister toured the Department, meeting staff across the various teams and learning more about the vital services DLP provides to the people of the Cayman Islands. The visit offered an opportunity to gain a closer understanding of the Department's day-to-day operations, hear directly from employees about the work they do, and recognize the dedication and professionalism of the team.

Visits like these play an important role in strengthening connections between leadership and staff, fostering open dialogue, and reinforcing a shared commitment to delivering high-quality public service.

We thank the Acting Minister for taking the time to visit the Department and look forward to continuing to work together in serving our community.

📚 Another Labour Act training completed for the Department of Labour and Pensions, delivered in partnership with Workforce Opportunities & Residency Cayman - WORC Opportunities & Residency Cayman (WORC).

Participants learned more about the Labour Act (2021 Revision), including the rights and responsibilities of employers and employees and the requirements that help support fair and compliant workplaces across the Cayman Islands. ⚖️

Construction is one of the most hazardous industries, but most serious accidents are preventable. The Focus Four Hazards are the leading causes of serious injuries and deaths in construction:

⚠️ Falls

Together, these hazards account for the majority of construction fatalities.

As temperatures rise, remember the basics:

Would you know what to do in a heat emergency?

If a worker is confused, collapses, has a seizure, becomes unconscious, or shows signs of heat stroke, act fast.

Call emergency services. Move the person to a cool area. Cool the body immediately. Stay with them until help arrives.

Every second matters during heat stroke.
