Cayman Islands Shipping Registry, Maritime Authority of the Cayman Islands Provides client-focused quality maritime administration and related services including vessel registry

The Cayman Islands Shipping Registry (CISR) was formed in 1903. The CISR is a division of the Maritime Authority of the Cayman Islands (MACI) and is responsible for pleasure yacht and merchant ship vessel registration; provision of surveys and certification to Cayman-registered vessels globally and to ‘new builds’, irrespective of flag; provision of construction supervision of new builds; ensuring

crew compliance on Cayman-registered vessels; implementing marine pollution prevention; maritime safety and security; and development of national maritime policy formation. MACI is a statutory corporation formed as a separate legal entity under the Maritime Authority of the Cayman Islands Law (2005) which came into effect on 1 July, 2005. The Authority is wholly-owned by the Government of the Cayman Islands but governed by a Board of Directors appointed by the Governor of the Cayman Islands.

The Cayman Registry is dedicated to raising awareness among all seafarers regarding their right to a safe and professional maritime working environment. In support of this, Cayman Registry organized a peaceful and safe space for yacht crew on Monday, March 23rd, just before the Palm Beach International Boat Show.

This initiative, made possible through the generous support of Safe Harbor Rybovich, was a direct way for Cayman Registry to serve the seafaring community.

While Cayman Registry has been working for decades to protect the human element, including mandates for employment agreements and established procedures for reporting/no-tolerance policy for sexual harassment and misconduct, this particular event focused on prioritizing seafarer wellness.

We firmly believe that focusing on wellbeing is a necessity, not a luxury. It is the right path forward for the industry, both at sea and ashore. The event featured complimentary yoga and sound healing sessions, followed by a health-conscious lunch. Additionally, a variety of useful information surrounding resources were made available to all crew.

Cayman Registry extends its thanks to all involved, including the yacht crew who were able to attend and take this valuable time for themselves, away from the high demands of the industry. Together, we make the difference.

Sunday marked the conclusion of the free one-day Introduction to Boating: Safe Operations of Commercial Vessels course. As the first course of its kind, it was met with tremendous enthusiasm and proved to be a great success within our local maritime community.

Over the course of four training days, nearly 100 participants attended, demonstrating the strong interest in and demand for this important initiative. The Maritime Authority of the Cayman Islands extends its sincere appreciation to the United Kingdom Maritime and Coastguard Agency for providing the funding that made this course possible.

We also wish to thank the Cayman Islands Government: Ministry of Financial Services, the Cayman Islands Coast Guard, and the Port Authority of the Cayman Islands for their invaluable support and collaboration throughout this community initiative.

We look forward to offering additional courses and expanding training opportunities in the future.

✅ Key highlights include:

- Seafarer Employment Contracts are now a legal requirement for pleasure vessels (CIGN 05/2024).

- Improved crew welfare provisions: twin rating cabins permitted for yachts up to 10,000GT, with additional facilities such as officers’ lounge, crew lounge, and gym.

- Enhanced guidance on addressing bullying, harassment, and sexual misconduct at sea (CIGN 05/2025).

- New Record of Auxiliary Tender (ROAT) introduced to support charter license compliance (CIGN 01/2025).

- Updated STCW certification standards for yachts with multiple engines, reflecting automation and redundancy improvements (CISN 01/2024).

- Greater flexibility for private ISM yachts: additional guests may now be carried without Flag dispensation, within specified limits (CISN 01/2025).

We remain committed to supporting the maritime community with progressive policies that prioritize safety, welfare, and operational excellence.
