Shouf Biosphere Reserve Lebanon The largest of Lebanon nature reserves, Al-Shouf Cedar Nature Reserve stretches from Dahr Al-Baidar in the north to Niha Mountain in the south.

The Al-Shouf Cedar Nature Reserve is a popular destination for hiking and trekking, with trails matching all levels of fitness. Bird watching, mountain biking, and snowshoeing are also popular. From the summit of the rugged mountains, visitors will have a panoramic view of the countryside, eastward to the Beqa'a Valley and Qaraoun Lake, and westward toward the Mediterranean.

شاركت محمية أرز الشوف في ورشة العمل الإقليمية MedForval في عين دراهم، تونس، ممثلة بالآنسة لين البستاني ، ضمن مشروع Pre4MedFor الذي يهدف إلى تعزيز الوقاية من حرائق الغابات في غابات حوض البحر الأبيض المتوسط. على مدار الورشة، تبادل الخبراء والممثلون الإقليميون المعارف التقنية، وشاركوا تجارب ميدانية، وناقشوا نهجًا مبتكرة ومجتمعية لتعزيز مرونة النظم البيئية في مواجهة التحديات المناخية.
كما وشكلت الزيارة الميدانية إلى المنتزه الوطني الفجيّة مناسبة لاختبار ممارسات حفظ التنوع البيولوجي وإدارة مخاطر الحرائق والدور الحيوي للمجتمعات المحلية في حماية المشاهد الطبيعية.
ومن خلال هذه المشاركة، تُجدد محمية شوف التزامها بالتعاون الإقليمي وتبادل المعرفة والعمل المشترك من أجل غابات متوسطية أكثر استدامة ومرونة أمام تغير المناخ.

The Shouf Biosphere Reserve was represented by Ms. Line Boustani at the regional MedForval workshop in Ain Draham, Tunisia, part of the Pre4MedFor project aimed at strengthening forest fire prevention across Mediterranean forests. Over the course of the workshop, regional experts and representatives exchanged technical knowledge, shared field experiences, and discussed innovative, community-based approaches to enhance ecosystem resilience amid climatic challenges.

A field visit to El Feija National Park provided valuable insights into local biodiversity conservation, wildfire risk management practices, and the crucial role of local communities in safeguarding natural landscapes.
Through its participation, Shouf Biosphere Reserve reiterates its commitment to regional cooperation, knowledge exchange, and collective action for more sustainable, climate-resilient Mediterranean forests.

​وكانت مناسبة لتثمين جهود فريق العمل وعطائه المستمر رغم كل الظروف. لاسيما الفريق الميداني الذي يضم الجوالين والمرشدين المتواجدين على مداخل المحمية والذين يعملون في الأعياد والعطل، بعيدا عن عائلاتهم وذويهم مستقبلين الزوار بكل محبة وحرفية عالية

تواصل محمية أرز الشوف، ضمن إطار مشروع PARSIFAL المموّل من Agence Française de Développement، تنفيذ أنشطة تهدف إلى دعم المجتمعات المحلية وتشجيع الممارسات الزراعية المستدامة في منطقة الشوف.
وفي نيحا الشوف، نُظّمت ورشة تدريبية تشاركية جمعت 28 مشاركًا من مزارعين ومربّي نحل ومُصنّعي أغذية، شكّلت النساء أكثر من نصفهم، وركّزت على الاستدامة والإدارة المسؤولة للموارد الطبيعية.
تناولت الجلسات مواضيع الزراعة المستدامة، والزراعة الحرجية، والإدارة المتكاملة للآفات، والممارسات الزراعية الجيدة، إضافة إلى تسويق الأعشاب، والتغليف، ووضع العلامات. ومن خلال مقاربة عملية، تعرّف المشاركون إلى أساليب تساعد على تحسين جودة الإنتاج، وتطوير فرص التسويق، وتعزيز المنتجات المحلية الصديقة للبيئة.
ويشمل المشروع سلسلة تدخلات متكاملة في المناطق الحرجية والزراعية، تشمل الوقاية من الحرائق، والإدارة المستدامة للموارد الطبيعية، ودعم المبادرات الإنتاجية المحلية، بما يعزز التنمية البيئية والاقتصادية في المنطقة.

Within the framework of the PARSIFAL project funded by Agence Française de Développement, the Shouf Biosphere Reserve continues to implement activities aimed at supporting local communities and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.
In Niha, a participatory training workshop brought together 28 participants, including farmers, beekeepers, and food producers, with women representing more than half of them. The workshop focused on sustainability and the responsible management of natural resources.
The sessions addressed topics such as sustainable agriculture, agroforestry, integrated pest management, and good agricultural practices, in addition to herb marketing, packaging, and labeling. Through a practical approach, participants were introduced to methods that help improve product quality, expand marketing opportunities, and strengthen environmentally friendly local products.
The project includes a series of integrated interventions in forested and agricultural areas, including fire prevention, sustainable natural resource management, and support for local productive initiatives, contributing to environmental and economic development in the region.

في اليوم العالمي للتنوّع البيولوجي، وتحت شعار «العمل محليًا لأثر عالمي»، تؤكد محمية أرز الشوف أن حماية التنوّع البيولوجي ليست مجرد نظرية، بل هي ممارسة يومية تنطلق من حماية الغابات، والموارد المائية، والمجتمعات التي تعتمد عليها.
فالمبادرات المحلية، مثل حملات التنظيف المجتمعية، واستعادة النباتات المحلية، وحماية الحياة البرية، تساهم بشكل مباشر في الحدّ من خسارة التنوّع البيولوجي. كما أن الحفاظ على الأنواع والأنظمة البيئية المهمة يعزّز قدرة المجتمعات المحلية على الصمود ويدعم سبل العيش المستدامة.
إن تحقيق تغيير حقيقي يتطلب مشاركة الجميع — من مزارعين ومؤسسات ونساء وشباب وسلطات محلية ومجتمع مدني — عبر اعتماد أنماط حياة أكثر استدامة ودعم المبادرات البيئية، كلٌّ ضمن مجاله.
العالم اليوم بحاجة إلى أسلوب حياة تتطوّر فيه الغابات والمياه والتراث والإنسان معًا بانسجام مع الطبيعة.

On this International Day for Biological Diversity, under the theme “Acting locally for global impact”, the message of the Shouf Biosphere Reserve is clear: biodiversity conservation is not just a concept — it is a daily practice rooted in protecting forests, water resources, and the communities that depend on them.
Local initiatives such as community clean-up campaigns, restoring native plant species, and protecting local wildlife contribute directly to halting biodiversity loss. Safeguarding important species and ecosystems also strengthens local resilience and supports sustainable livelihoods.
Meaningful change requires the involvement of everyone — farmers, businesses, women, youth groups, local authorities, and civil society — through adopting more sustainable lifestyles and supporting environmentally responsible initiatives within their respective fields.
What is needed today is a shared way of life where forests, water, traditions, and people evolve together in harmony with nature.

داخل غابات الأرز والسنديان، والمروج المليئة بالأزهار البرية، والحقول الزراعية، يعمل النحل والملقّحات الأخرى بصمت ، محافظين على استمرارية الحياة.
في اليوم العالمي للنحل، وتحت شعار “لنتكاتف من أجل الإنسان والكوكب – شراكة تحافظ علينا جميعًا”، تسلّط محمية أرز الشوف الضوء على الدور الأساسي الذي يلعبه النحل في دعم التنوّع البيولوجي، وتجدد الأنظمة البيئية، وتعزيز الزراعية المحلية.
في أنحاء المحمية، لا تزال تربية النحل جزءًا من الحياة الريفية اليومية، وتقليدًا متوارثًا عبر الأجيال، يجمع بين المعرفة المحلية والممارسات المستدامة التي تحمي النحل وموائله، وتدعم في الوقت نفسه سبل العيش المحلية.

Key responsibilities
1.Manage and coordinate the implementation of rural development activities and initiatives in the reserve
2.Monitor and record sales data for rural products at entrances and points of sale, including souvenir items
3.Follow up with women’s cooperatives, workshops, and product agents to ensure high product quality, hygiene, and compliance with standards
4.Coordinate and follow up on organic certification processes with relevant bodies
5.Develop and maintain a categorized annual product list aligned with workshops and production cycles
6.Conduct research on rural development best practices and adapt relevant approaches
7.Contribute to improving existing projects and proposing new initiatives that meet community needs
8.Work closely with local producers, farmers, and artisans to provide guidance and technical support
9.Organize events and training sessions to enhance production, quality standards, and business skills, while encouraging women and youth participation

Requirements for position
•Fluent in Arabic and English (Oral and written)
•Computer literacy, including knowledge of MS office applications, basic software applications and familiarity with the internet and email communications
•Ability to manage people from different backgrounds and high coordination abilities
Educational qualifications/ experience
•Bachelor’s degree in Community Development, Rural Development, Agriculture, Environmental Sciences, Social Sciences, Business Administration, or a related field
•5 years of professional experience in community development role
•Demonstrable experience of delivery of community development initiatives

في اليوم العالمي للأنواع المهددة بالانقراض، تسلّط محمية ارز الشوف الضوء على التنوع البيولوجي الغني الذي يميز المشهد الطبيعي فيها.
بين عامَي 2023 و2024، وثّقت أعمال الرصد والمراقبة في كل من محمية أرز الشوف مستنقع عمّيق وجود 25 نوعًا من الثدييات البرية، من خلال أكثر من 700 تسجيل للحياة البرية، ما يعكس غنى هذه النظم البيئية وترابطها.
ومن بين هذه الأنواع، الضبع المخطط ( _Hyaena hyaena_ )، الحيوان الوطني في لبنان، والمصنّف على القائمة الحمراء للاتحاد الدولي لحماية الطبيعة (IUCN Red List) ضمن فئة "قريب من التهديد"، ورغم ندرته وصعوبة مشاهدته، يؤدي دورًا أساسيًا في الطبيعة بصفته منظّفًا طبيعيًا يساهم في الحفاظ على صحة الأنظمة البيئية.
لكل نوع قصة في هذا التوازن. وحماية هذه الأنواع تعني حماية الموائل الطبيعية والإرث البيئي الذي يشكّل أساس الحياة للأجيال القادمة.

On Endangered Species Day, the Shouf Biosphere Reserve celebrates the wildlife that quietly shapes its landscape.
Between 2023 and 2024, wildlife monitoring across the Shouf Biosphere Reserve and Ammiq Wetland documented 25 terrestrial mammal species through more than 700 recorded wildlife events, revealing the richness and connectivity of these ecosystems.
Among them is the Striped Hyena (Hyaena hyaena), Lebanon’s national animal and a Near Threatened species as listed in the IUCN Red List. Rarely seen, it moves silently through forests and valleys, playing a vital role as a natural scavenger that helps keep ecosystems healthy.
Every species tells a story of balance. Protecting them means protecting the landscapes, habitats, and natural heritage that sustain life for future generations.
