$7 MILLION CORRUPT LAND PURCHASE: NO JUSTIFICATION!

On August 14 the Belize Press Office issued a release trying to justify acquiring a $7 million dollar property for the housing of the new tertiary level teaching hospital in Belmopan. However, the attempted explanation brings more questions than answers to the Belizean people.

The loan Motion tabled May 19, 2023 for the hospital was very clear that the funds was to be used for the development of the tertiary level hospital on the University of Belizeโ€™s Belmopan Campus to double as a university hospital for medical education. The change in location for this massive project illustrates the incompetence of the PUP Government for taking a Motion to parliament without proper assessment and analysis.

Why did the government intentionally mislead Members of Parliament on the location of the project knowing they would be seeking to purchase private land later? At a Cabinet meeting of April 16 they ALREADY agreed to move the project from the University of Belize, so in May when it was tabled they flat out lied to belizean people that it would be on UB campus. Government was obligated to inform Parliament at that time that they were planning to purchase private land for the construction of this teaching hospital. From the onset the Ministry of Health had absolutely no intention of placing the Hospital on the UB property!

The government has failed to explain why it was necessary for the state to purchase private land at a random location when it has land available for free through the University of Belize and Recondev. They have failed to justify paying more than 39 times the market value of the property and offered no solution to the potential health risks of undertaking such a massive construction project near a sewer pond. Was the Department of Environment even brought in to provide advice for the project? No Tertiary care hospital at a cost of $90 Million dollar should be built near a sewage pond where the surrounding area is flood prone. Farmers in communities near sewage ponds have long suffered as they pose both an environmental and health hazard.

The United Democratic Party calls on the corrupt Briceno government to reverse course and move forward with the construction of the teaching hospital on UB property as passed in the National Assembly. Any investment in the development of UB property would be towards a property for the students of Belize. The development of roads, expansion of electricity and water will bring much needed development for the universityโ€™s campus and residents of the surrounding area.

If the Government was not prepared for this project the Saudi Funds should have been allocated to building the new KHMH for which property had already been identified and not wait for CABEI funding. The incompetence of the Prime Minister and Minister of Health is on full display. Such a corrupt transaction warrants the resignation of the Minister of Health and everyone involved.

The fact that in just one week, the most senior ministers of the Briceno administration have come out publicly to justify spending $7 million for a 15 acre parcel of rural road side land on the outskirts of Belmopan valued less than $300 thousand definitely stinks to high heaven. Why are they all lining up to defend such an obviously corrupt transaction? Are they expecting campaign financing in return from the seller?

How many ministers can $7 million actually buy?!

I thank MP Hanna for sharing her profound insight with me from her four terms in Parliament.

What I admire most about MP Hanna besides her eloquent fiery speeches in Parliament and her weekly columns on policy, is when you sit with her you are talking to a leader with genius level political powers, a warrior, a visionary, a humanitarian, a true stateswoman who transcends all, a true patriot who put her Party before herself.

I wish her well as she retires from Parliament.
