Keep rats & mice away by ensuring that food is securely stored in containers with tight fitting lids.
Mosquitoes can lay eggs in as little as a tablespoon of water. During the rainy season, it is important to rid your property of unwanted items with the potential to hold water like coconut shells, dry leaves or garbage.
Rats & mice come unto our property in search of food and water and make their home near by. One way to deter their presence is to ensure that leftover dog food is properly disposed of in order to eliminate a possible food source for rats & mice.
A mosquito's lifecycle takes on average 7-10 days to go from egg to adult. The hotter the temperature on the outside is, this timeframe is shortened. A gentle reminder that conducting once weekly inspections on your property will allow you to identify and eliminate potential breeding for vectors.
The Ministry of Health, Wellness & Elderly Affairs reminds the public that denying vectors like rats and mosquitoes into your home will protect your family from diseases they carry. Vulnerable population like pregnant women MUST take extra care as Dengue Fever can have harmful effects on mummy and baby!
In support and recognition of Vector Awareness Campaign, the Ministry of Health, Wellness & Elderly Affairs kindly reminds the public that vectors find harborage in overgrown vegetation and abandon appliances and derelict vehicles. Keep your yard free from such to deter the presence of rats and mosquitoes.
Drums are recorded as the #1 breeding ground for the Aedes aegypti. Storing water properly during the rainy season will prevent mosquitoes from breeding in containers like drums, buckets, tyres, bulk waste and other disposed items.
The launch of the Vector Awareness Campaign scheduled for Monday July 1st, 2024 in the Anse-la-Raye Village has been postponed due to the passing of Hurricane Beryl. A new date will be reviewed and communicated at the soonest.
The Ministry of Health , Wellness & Elderly Affairs through the Environmental Health Division officially launches its annual Vector Awareness Campaign to raise awareness about the impact of vectors and vector borne diseases. The launch is happening TODAY in the Anse la Raye Village in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Local Government. In support of this initiative we ask that the public to take ownership of your property and prevent vector breeding in order to reduce the spread of diseases like dengue fever & leptospirosis.
After a hurricane, vector breeding, particularly of mosquitoes like Aedes aegypti, can increase significantly due to several factors. Efforts to control mosquito breeding after a hurricane typically involve draining standing water and removing debris that can collect water

Reducing vector breeding is a personal responsibilty. Reducing breeding grounds around your home reduces the chances of disease transmission. Take Action today! Rid your property of vectors TODAY!
Reducing or eliminate vector breeding on your property yields greater results than applying chemicals to treat vectors. Commit to weekly inspections around your home to reduce the precence of factors encouraging the proliferation of vectors. Remember NO STANDING WATER then NO MOSQUITO BREEDING. PROPER GARBAGE DISPOSAL then NO RATS AND MICE!
The Environmental Health Division plays its role in the reduction of mosquitoes and rats on the island. However, efforts are not sustained because human habits and behaviors potentially contributes towards exposure to mosquitoes and rats by either allowing standing water to remain exposed to mosquito breeding or poor garbage disposal which encourages the presence of rats and mice.
Knowing about the pest that cause you trouble is easier for proper management and elminiation from your home and property. This rainy season, ensure that your interventions are targeted to prevent the proliferation of mosquitoes and rats.
In light of the Rainy Season, the challenge continues to remove water holding vessels and waste items from the environment to reduce the possibility for mosquitoes and rat breeding. The Environmental Health Division poses the challenge to start a composting bin or pit in your yard. Such an initiative will eliminate both mosquito breeding sites and discourage the presence of rodents in the home.
