🐆❄️ THE GHOST OF THE MOUNTAINS — SNOW LEOPARD
Silent. Elusive. Beautifully adapted to one of the harshest environments on Earth.
Meet the Snow Leopard (Panthera uncia), one of the most remarkable big cats on our planet.
🏔️ Where do they live?
Snow leopards inhabit the high mountain ranges of Central and South Asia, across 12 countries: Afghanistan, Bhutan, China, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. In the Himalayas, they are commonly found at elevations of around 3,000–5,400 metres above sea level.
❄️ What makes them special?
Their thick, insulating fur helps them survive extreme cold. Their wide, fur-covered paws work almost like natural snowshoes, while their long, powerful tails help with balance on steep rocky terrain and provide extra warmth.
👀 Why are they so difficult to see?
Their beautiful rosette-patterned coat provides extraordinary camouflage among rocks and snow. Combined with their remote mountain habitat and naturally elusive behaviour, this makes them one of the hardest big cats to observe in the wild.
🦌 What do they eat?
They mainly hunt wild mountain prey such as blue sheep, ibex, markhor and argali, but they can also take smaller animals such as marmots, hares and birds.
🌍 Why should we care?
The Snow Leopard is more than a beautiful animal. It is an important predator within fragile mountain ecosystems. Habitat loss, declining prey, illegal hunting, livestock conflict and climate change continue to threaten its future.
