Today is Mangabey Awareness Day 🐒
At LiWiSa, the mangabey species we work with is the sooty mangabey (Cercocebus atys), native to the coastal forests of West Africa. Like their cousins across the continent, the white-naped, black-crested, red-capped and golden-bellied mangabeys, they face the same pressures: habitat loss, hunting, and the illegal pet trade.
Most of our sooty mangabeys arrive as orphans, confiscated from the pet trade or rescued after their mothers were killed. Our team raises them and prepares them for life without human contact, working toward the day we can release them back into the forest. That release programme still needs funding and support to become a reality, and it’s a goal we’re determined to reach.
