FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
LAMDG CALLS FOR IMMEDIATE WITHDRAWAL OF NEC ACTING CHAIRMAN APPOINTMENT TO SAFEGUARD ELECTORAL CREDIBILITY AND NATIONAL STABILITY
Monrovia, Liberia – April 2, 2026:
The Liberia Alternative Movement for Democratic Governance (LAMDG) expresses grave concern over the recent appointment of Mr. Jonathan K. Weedor as Acting Chairman of the National Elections Commission (NEC). In light of the serious implications for electoral integrity and public trust, LAMDG calls for the immediate withdrawal of this appointment.
LAMDG emphasizes that public confidence remains the foundation of any credible democratic electoral process. Elections must not only be conducted in a free and fair manner—they must also be widely perceived as such by all stakeholders. Any individual appointed to lead the National Elections Commission must embody unquestionable neutrality, independence, and integrity. Unfortunately, this appointment has generated significant public concern and risks eroding trust in the electoral system.
Furthermore, LAMDG notes with deep concern the growing perception of a conflict of interest associated with this appointment. Reports suggesting prior involvement of Mr. Weedor in activities connected to the electoral process of President Joseph Boakai raise legitimate questions about impartiality. In democratic governance, perception carries equal weight as procedure. The leadership of the Elections Commission must remain beyond reproach and free from any appearance of political alignment.
Allowing this appointment to stand risks undermining the credibility of future elections, including the 2029 General and Presidential Elections. It creates a dangerous perception that electoral outcomes could be influenced or predetermined—an outcome that could provoke public distrust, electoral disputes, and potential instability.
While the President holds the constitutional authority to make such appointments, LAMDG stresses that this authority must be exercised with utmost caution and responsibility. Decisions of this magnitude must prioritize national interest, reinforce democratic institutions, and strengthen public confidence—not weaken it.
In view of the foregoing, LAMDG respectfully but firmly calls on the President of the Republic to reconsider and immediately withdraw this appointment in the supreme interest of Liberia’s democracy. Protecting the integrity of the electoral process is essential to preserving peace, stability, and the legitimacy of governance in our country.
Liberia’s democracy depends on the trust of its people, and that trust must be protected at all costs.
Signed,
Liberia Alternative Movement for Democratic Governance (LAMDG)
