IIC Participates in Cross-Regional Peer Exchange under World Bank Project
The Independent Information Commission- IIC with support from Smart Africa Digital Academy ( SADA) and the world Bank with funding through the Western Africa Digital Integration Program (WARDIP-SOP2)- Liberia has embarked on a Data Protection Cross-Regional Peer Exchange Study Tour in Nigeria and Kenya respectively. ( May 4-5, 2026 Abuja, Nigeria) (May 7-8 202, Nairobi, Kenya).
This study Tour brings together Data Protection Authorities and Freedom of Information Commissions with dual Roles from all parts of Africa.
Participants include Delegates from the Gambia, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ethiopia, Burundi Somalia , Zambia, Malawi, Kenya and representatives from the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa (CEMAC), the Economic Community of West African State (ECOWAS) and the intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).
On the 4th and 5th of May 2026, We were hosted by the Nigeria Data Protection Commission ( NDPC) at the Abuja Continental Hotel.
The Peer Exchange focused on Institution Setup and organization, Regulatory Development, Compliance , Supervision and Enforcement, Digital system and tools, Capacity Building and Human Resources, Public Trust and Stakeholder Engagement .
The peer Exchange in Nigeria gave us direct insight into how participating authorities were Set-up, financed or operationalized.
We examined the Nigeria Ecosystem Including Institutional Models, Data Controllers Registration procedures and Process, the Roles of Data controllers, Compliance monitoring, Investigation and Enforcement Mechanism, Public Awareness and Institutional Training Strategies, Cyber Security and ICT infrastructure and Technological Systems and many more...
Delegates also highlighted similarities and contrasts and explored ways to ensure regional harmonization and synchronization.
We are now moving to Kenya for the Conclusion of the Study.
