NEC Authorizes People’s Action Party to Hold First National Convention
The National Elections Commission (NEC) has granted authorization to the proposed People’s Action Party (PAP) to convene its first national convention, marking a key step toward full political party registration in Liberia.
In a communication dated October 27 and addressed to Mr. Ahmed K. Sirleaf, Chairperson of the Organizing Committee of the PAP, NEC Chairperson Davidetta Browne Lansanah confirmed that the proposed party has met the preliminary requirements under Liberian electoral regulations.
“The Commission authorizes you to take the proposed party to its first national convention no later than six months upon receipt of this communication,” the NEC stated.
According to the NEC, the authorization is in keeping with Section 7.1 of its Regulations and Procedures Relating to the Registration of Political Parties, Alliances, Coalitions, and Independent Candidates.
The provision mandates the Commission to permit proposed political parties that have fulfilled preliminary requirements to hold conventions for the adoption of their constitutions, by-laws, and the election of officers, in line with Article 79 of the 1986 Constitution.
Chairperson Browne Lansanah noted that once the PAP successfully conducts its national convention and submits the required documentation, the Commission will issue an official certificate recognizing it as a fully registered political party in Liberia.
PAP is a new political party in Liberia with less than 6 months in existence.
