-outlines 2024 conservation priorities; vows to take the lead

Monrovia, Liberia June 27, 2024: The Conservation Department of the Forestry Development Authority (FDA) on

Earlier this year, President Joseph Nyumah appointed a new management team to conduct the affairs of the FDA amongst which conserving, preserving and protecting the forest and biodiversity are its primary goal and objective. Against this background, the Conservation Department demed it prudent to hold a round table interactive discussions whereby the partners and FDA can interface and find an amicable way forward to enhance tightier cooperation and coordination.

The meeting basically aimed at identifying the various actors, their respective areas of interventions, influences as well as interests in the sector. The meeting afforded the participating parties the opportunity to identify and discuss progress, challenges, lessons learned and planned interventions in the sector going forward. At the meeting each participating actor provided an overview of their work and its impact on conservation activities.

Making a special remark, FDA Managing Director, Mr. Rudolph Merab underscored the importance of the meeting and urged the partners to redouble their efforts in meeting the goals and objectives as it relates to protecting biodiversity. He used the occasion to reecho FDA'S readiness to rigorously monitor those projects undertaken by the partners to ensure that deliverables are met within the specified time table.

In his own words," We will take the lead. We will tell you what we want and not what you want. We will monitor all of your activities and make sure they meet the needs of our people.
Under this administration we intend to take the lead.We intend to have proper coordination amongst all of us, " He told the partners in a serious mood adding," Subsequently, before I sign any sectoral clearance I have to see your full report and the supporting financial report." The Managing Director noted that henceforth FDA'S representatives will go with the partners in the field for auditing purposes and if the audit does not prove to march the reality FDA will take appropriate actions. He then assured the partners of FDA's fullest support to make sure that their jobs are made easier while expressing the hope that the partners will help FDA to become what it was purposed the be.

In her presentation which contained a conservation policy, FDA'S Deputy Managing Director for, Conservation, Community and Carbon(3cs) Madam Nora Bowier, amongst other things drew a road map outlining FDA's conservation priorities for 2024. She stressed the need for tighter collaboration and cooperation with the partners going forward. She earlier welcomed the partners and acknowledged their efforts while pledging to work with them closely to accelerate conservation activities in the sector.

The meeting witnessed exhaustive discussions amongst the partners on enhancing conservation activities, questions and answers, identifying gaps, problems and challenges that hamper growth and development in the sector.
Partners represented at the meeting were WCF, USAID, Eco Health Alliance, Tetra Tech, UNDP, UNDP/FAO, US Forest, LCRP US Service, Travels, FFI, SCNL and LCRP, Parley

At the end of the meeting FDA and the partners/actors reaffirmed commitment to improve coordination, communication collaboration, and agreed to improve relationship and coordination to move the sector forward. The partners pledged to work with FDA and hoped she will take the lead progressively. A draft coordination plan was presented to the partners by the FDA.

It can be recalled that across the conservation landscape there are a number of donor supported interventions which are being implemented by various stakeholders organizations, including local and international partners. Although these stakeholders have and continue to make positive impact in promoting Liberia's dream of sustainable forest management, the stakeholders continue to seek FDA's active leadership role that enhances the promotion of effective coordination and communication between and amongst all actors.

FDA Rangers Rescue Female Python And unborn babies
-neutralize unprovoked death sentence

A female pathon and its unborn babies are being rescued by rangers of the Forestry Development Authority (FDA) assigned in East Nimba Reserve (ENNR) Nimba County, Liberia, from the clutch of untimely death. The female pathon was reportedly going through a delivery period when the hostile community dwellers galloped to the area and decided to eliminate the entire generation classifying it as a specie from an enemy world. On may 2, 2024, the female python was discovered on a farm land in Gbobayee Town located in the Northern Nimba landscape directly under Mount Blei. According to report, the owner of the farm who happens to have knowledge on protected species due to ongoing awareness in the area about the need to protect endangered animals, immediately rushed to the town and informed the chief who is said to have invited the head of the Community Forest Guard of the Blei Joint Community Forest Management Body (JCFMB), and told them about the need to rescue the python that was giving birth. According to FDA Ranger Catherine Kuku Dolo, chief park warden of (ENNR) when the information reached FDA Office in Zortapa she subsequently dispatched few Rangers and Eco guards in the area . The gallant and vigilant rangers, Eco guards, and Community Forest Guards then provided maximum protection for the python and its unborn babies.

Chief Park Warden Dolo said, "Since this activity, we contacted our conservation partners to help our rangers and Eco guards but to no avail. We managed to work tirelessly to protect the python's eggs up to the hatching stage. The python eggs started hatching since the 12th of June 2024 and we have managed to collect nineteen (19) babies that are being kept at the East Nimba Nature Reserve office in Zortapa currently."

She continued, "We have also been doing some research and calling other snake experts for consultations and they advised that we should release them as soon as possible deep in the wild with no human interaction. FDA's Deputy Managing Director For Conservation, Community and Carbon(3cs), Madam Nora Bowier has commended the rangers for job well done and called on partners to support the efforts of the eco guards.

U.S Forest Service to Boost Liberia's Ecotourism, Forest Restoration Programs

-vows to assist FDA Restore One Million Hectares of Forested Land by 2030

The U.S. Forest Service has unveiled its plan to boost Liberia's Capacity for Forest Restoration to Enhance Sustainable Forest Management. In a communication addressed to FDA Managing Director, Mr. Rudolph Merab, the U.S. Forest maintains that this initiative is a part of her broader effort aimed at "Building Liberia’s Capacity for Ecotourism, Forest Restoration, and Sustainable Forest Management."

"Our goal is to address the pressing need to restore degraded lands and combat deforestation, supporting Liberia’s commitment to restore one million hectares of forested land by 2030 as part of the AFR100 initiative," the communication says.

It can be recalled that the USFS has a rich history of promoting forestry both domestically and internationally. Notably in the Mount Nimba landscape of Guinea, the USFS developed local and community capacities to restore critical forested habitats using native species, integrating enhanced fire management techniques with the establishment of native tree nurseries and replanting efforts.

In the communication, the U.S. Forest Service emphasized that," Our approach is two-pronged: firstly, to support partner organizations in Liberia to develop and manage native tree-based nurseries; secondly, to use these nurseries for supplying seedlings to restore targeted degraded lands within protected areas and community forests. Our initial efforts will focus on the East Nimba Nature Reserve (ENNR) and Lake Piso Multiple Use Reserve (LPMUR), with potential expansion to other sites on a case-by-case basis."

Meanwhile, to kick off this initiative U.S. Forest Service is organizing a transborder experience-sharing study tour in Bossou, Guinea, from April 29th to May 3rd, 2024. The tour aims to allow the Guinean partners to share their insights and experiences in forest restoration and fire management techniques with interested Liberian partners. The tour is being led by the Guinean partner NGO Natural Resources Without Poverty. At least four FDA
four technicians from forest restoration, and conservation awareness and outreach departments were selected to participate in this study tour.
