Statement by Senator Simeon B. Taylor
As Senator of Grand Cape Mount County, my foremost duty remains to represent and safeguard the interests of our people. In doing so, I am equally mindful of our obligation to uphold the laws of the Republic and to respect the binding agreements that govern the operations of Bea Mountain Mining Corporation. At the same time, it is essential that the company continues to fully honor its obligations, particularly those that directly affect the welfare and development of our communities.
Looking ahead, there is a clear opportunity to strengthen the existing framework. While a formal review of the agreement is anticipated in 2028, I encourage the Government to commence this process now. Early and deliberate engagement will ensure that the concerns, expectations, and aspirations of our people are adequately reflected in any future arrangements.
On social infrastructure, I will continue to advocate for the establishment of a modern, well-equipped hospital within the concession area. One that is accessible and responsive to the needs of our people. While existing provisions address healthcare, the scale and impact of current operations justify a more transformative investment in this critical sector. I remain committed to constructive engagement with all stakeholders to advance this objective.
As we pursue these priorities, we must remain firmly guided by the rule of law. Our advocacy must be peaceful, organized, and responsible. We must not encourage actions that undermine stability or jeopardize the very benefits we seek to protect. Encouragingly, our collective efforts are beginning to yield tangible results. By the end of this year, we anticipate that our communities will receive direct dividend payments in the millions of dollars benefits that must be safeguarded through lawful and orderly conduct. The more stable and productive the operations, the greater the potential returns to our people.
I call on all Cape Mountaineers, especially those in the host communities of Bea Mountain Mining Corporation, and the people of Liberia at large to remain calm and act in accordance with the law. Be assured that we, as leaders, are doing everything possible in the best interest of our people and the country.
Our sustained engagement, including structured and responsible advocacy, has already contributed to meaningful progress. Communities are beginning to see direct benefits, local businesses are gaining opportunities, and initiatives such as the Clan Fund are taking shape. We will continue to work collaboratively, responsibly, and in the best interest of our people to ensure that these gains are not only preserved but expanded.
