My fellow Lofians, we want to take this time to wholeheartedly thank our Lofian brothers and sisters of the Lofa County Association of Kentucky and Southern Indiana residing in the United States of America for their tireless efforts in contributing financially towards the completion of the Latrine facility at the Balakpalazu Clinic.

LCU Goes Solar soon: Breaks ground for 100KW Power Project to Ends Years of huge portion of the University’s budget been used on fuel and running of generator

By: Dorbor, Patrick & Tokpa

A major milestone was marked recently as the administration of Lofa County University officially broke ground for the construction of a 100KW solar power project aimed at ending years of heavy dependence on generators and reducing rising operational costs.
For years, the university has relied largely on generator power, a situation that reportedly consumed up to 40% of its national budget allocation due to fuel purchases and generator maintenance. The new solar initiative is expected to significantly ease that financial burden and improve energy stability on campus.
The project, funded by the Government of Liberia, is expected to be completed within five months, beginning June 2025. It will be implemented by A-1 Technical Engineering Solution with technical support from the Rural Renewable Energy Agency (RREA), which will serve as the owner’s engineer on the project.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, officials explained that the solar project forms part of the university’s broader development plan to address persistent electricity challenges affecting academic and administrative operations.

The Chief Executive Officer of A-1 Technical Engineering Solution, Daniel M.C. Patmore, described the project as the company’s largest installation in the region so far. He assured that the work would be carried out according to international engineering standards to guarantee durability and year-round performance.

For his part, the County Liaison Officer of RREA, Moses A. Sah, reaffirmed his institution’s commitment to ensuring quality delivery. He noted that ongoing solar projects in the county, including the Barkedu solar plant, are also expected to strengthen power supply and support the university’s energy needs.

Meanwhile, the President of the Students Union, Melvin Halie, praised the administration for what he described as a “dream come true,” saying the project will transform student learning and enhance the university’s e-learning capacity.
The solar project is widely seen as a transformative step toward improving infrastructure, reducing costs, and ensuring sustainable electricity for the university community.

Pottery Farmer Calls for Government and Partner Support to Expand Poultry Farming

By: Tokpa Tarnue

A local poultry farmer has appealed to the government, development partners, and private investors to provide support aimed at expanding poultry farming and strengthening the craft industry.

Madam Bendu Laliah emphasized that poultry farming holds immense potential for job creation, cultural preservation, and rural economic growth, but remains underdeveloped due to limited resources and infrastructure.

Speaking during an interview in Voinjama, the farmer highlighted the challenges faced by poultry farmers including inadequate access to modern equipment, lack of training opportunities, and limited market access.

These constraints, the farmer noted, have slowed the growth that could otherwise thrive with the right support.

“Poultry farming is not just an art; it is a source of livelihood for many families,” the farmer said. “With proper investment in tools, training, and marketing, we can increase production, improve quality, and reach both local and international markets.”

The farmer called on the government to introduce policies and programs that promote poultry farming as part of the broader creative economy.

This includes providing financial grants, establishing poultry training centers, and supporting artisans through cooperative societies. Madam Lialah also urged non-governmental organizations and private investors to partner with local artisans to enhance skills development and innovation in poultry production.

Experts have supported the farmer’s appeal, noting that poultry farming aligns with sustainable development goals by promoting environmentally friendly practices and preserving traditional craftsmanship.

They argue that with adequate investment, the sector could become a significant contributor to national income and cultural tourism.

The farmer concluded by expressing optimism that with collective support from government agencies, partners, and the private sector, poultry farming can evolve into a vibrant industry that empowers communities and sustains cultural heritage for generations to come.
