Summer may be the season for taking a break from university, but it’s also a good time to look at what universities make possible.

At Masaryk University’s Bohunice Campus in Brno, world-class facilities and close collaboration with a university hospital are helping researchers build their careers in Europe.

In 2002, the EIB provided a €95 million loan to help make the campus possible, our first investment in an education project in Central and Eastern Europe.

Today, the campus is home to more than 8,000 students and 5,000 employees, with world-class laboratories, advanced equipment and close links to University Hospital Brno.

That’s where PLD Space’s MIURA 5 comes in.

MIURA 5 can help Europe deploy small satellites for communications, research, commercial and defence applications, while strengthening our competitiveness and security. This also means easier access to space for European companies.

We’re investing €30 million, alongside the European Commission, to support the development of this European launch vehicle and strengthen Europe’s access to space.

Electricity demand is growing. Our grids need to keep up.

That’s why we’re investing a further €50 million in Slovakia’s electricity distribution network, bringing our total financing for ZSE Group’s grid upgrades to €400 million.

Our financing will help
🔵modernise overhead lines and underground cables,
🔵upgrade substations and transformers,
🔵roll out smart meters
🔵 deploy grid automation technologies.

Making it easier to integrate more renewable energy, strengthen energy security and prepare the network for growing electricity demand.

Learning gains outperformed 70% of comparable education programmes worldwide.

That's the impact we're helping to achieve through a different approach to education financing in Sierra Leone. There, funding is no longer linked to activities delivered, but to learning outcomes achieved.

Through the Sierra Leone Education Innovation Challenge, we are supporting a model where payments are made only when improvements in literacy and numeracy are independently verified.

The Sierra Leone Education Innovation Challenge is an $18 million programme running across 325 schools in 5 geographical areas. It was funded by the local government with international partners that include the FCDO UK, the Hempel Foundation, the Korean International Cooperation Agency and Bank of America. We support it via the SDG Outcomes Fund, a pioneering equity fund that received an $18 million equity commitment through our ACP Trust Fund.

Together with our partners, we have helped reach 325 schools and 134,000 pupils, including nearly 49,000 students in 193 schools backed also through the SDG Outcomes Fund.

Sierra Leone's education system faces significant challenges, from teacher shortages and low attendance to climate-related disruptions and constrained public resources. This is a good example of innovative solutions used to help tackle complex social challenges, and improve opportunities for the next generation, especially for girls.

Artificial intelligence is transforming healthcare and helping detect cancer faster and more accurately.

We've signed a €20 million venture debt financing agreement with Finnish life-science technology company Aiforia Technologies to accelerate its AI-powered digital pathology platform.

Supported by the programme, the financing will help Aiforia advance its image analysis solutions, expand its commercial operations internationally and strengthen its position as a leader in the field.
Aiforia's deep learning technology assists pathologists by analysing ultra-high-resolution biopsy images to identify cancer cells with greater speed and precision, enhancing diagnostic capabilities that can improve patient care while enabling new medical discoveries.

Investing in innovative European companies like Aiforia strengthens Europe's competitiveness in life sciences and AI, while backing technologies that make a real difference for patients.

🇪🇺 🇰🇪 Electricity changes lives: it helps children study after dark, enables entrepreneurs to grow their businesses, improves access to services and creates new economic opportunities.

With the Last Mile Electricity Connectivity Project, we are (through EIB Global) helping extend reliable electricity to homes, schools and businesses across Kenya.

The country has made strong progress in expanding access to electricity: increasing from 29% in 2012 to 79% today. Yet many parts of it remain unconnected.

Co-financed with the European Commission, the African Development Bank Group and AFD - Agence Française de Développement, the Last Mile Electricity Connectivity project aims to power more homes, schools and businesses. Our goal is to reach 296,000 households and small businesses: ~1.4 million people across 32 counties.

Together, we can ensure that everyone benefits from the energy transition.
