BMTF it is a Multinational Medical Unit (MMU) with deployable modular military capability, mission tailored for a broad spectrum of crisis response operations. The BMTF it is built upon the existing national medical capabilities in the West Balkan region. It is a multinational military medical unit composed of medical modules formed from contributions of nations: ALB, BIH, MKD, MNE, SRB and SVN.

Today, the Balkan Medical Task Force SO hosted an official visit by the French Ambassador to N.Macedonia H.E Mr Christophe Le Rigoleur and the Defence Attaché Colonel Valery Sens. The visit provided an opportunity to deliver a comprehensive presentation of the BMTF, with particular emphasis on its organizational structure, mission, and ongoing coordination mechanisms.
During the meeting, detailed insights were shared regarding the BMTF’s recent activities, operational achievements, and current initiatives aimed at strengthening regional medical cooperation and crisis response capabilities. The discussions also highlighted the Task Force’s role in enhancing interoperability among participating nations, as well as its contributions to multinational exercises and capacity-building efforts.

From 20–24 April 2026, the Balkan Medical Task Force (BMTF) successfully conducted its Annual Collective Training of the ROLE 2 Field Hospital in Belgrade, Serbia. This multinational exercise brought together medical teams from across the region to strengthen operational readiness, enhance interoperability, and improve joint response capabilities in humanitarian and disaster scenarios.
The training focused on key areas such as standardized medical procedures, rapid deployment in emergency conditions, efficient patient care and evacuation, and coordinated use of medical resources in complex field environments. Through realistic, scenario-based exercises, participants demonstrated their ability to operate effectively in multinational missions. This activity also served as an important preparation step for Exercise Vigorous Warrior 2026, scheduled to take place in Estonia this June.
At the same time, from 21–24 April, the 60th BMTF Steering Board Meeting was held in Belgrade, with participation from the BMTF Standing Organization. Discussions focused on the approval of the BMTF Logistic Concept, the bidding process, preparations for Vigorous Warrior 2026, and the review of key legal documents, including the Agreement and Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). Representatives from partner nations, including Norway and the United States, also attended the meeting, highlighting strong international cooperation and support.

The Balkan Medical Task Force has actively participated in the online CIS Workshop for Exercise VW 26.

Representing BMTF, Chief S-6 SO is contributing to discussions focused on enhancing coordination, strengthening Host Nation Support (HNS), and aligning communication and information systems for the upcoming exercise.

Today the Balkan Medical Task Force (BMTF) had the honor of hosting the EU Defence Attaché, Col. Mynarik, for an official visit to the BMTF premises in Skopje.

During the meeting, representatives of the BMTF provided an overview of the current status and future plans of the organization. Discussions focused on the support delivered through the European Peace Facility.

Additionally, the meeting included an exchange of views on BMTF’s planned participation in international exercises scheduled for 2026 and the further development of regional medical cooperation.

The visit provided an excellent opportunity to strengthen dialogue, enhance mutual understanding, and reaffirm the importance of continued cooperation in advancing regional medical readiness and support.

BMTF Successfully Conducted Table Top Exercise 2026
The Balkan Medical Task Force (BMTF), in accordance with its 2026 Activity Plan and in
coordination with the BMTF Steering Board, successfully conducted the BMTF Table Top
Exercise (TTX) 2026 in cooperation with the Military Medical Training Center (MMTC).
The exercise was carried out in two phases:
9–14 February 2026 – Activation Phase (online via VTC) at Ilinden Barracks, Skopje
17–20 February 2026 – Deployment Phase in Belgrade, Serbia
TTX 2026 brought together key personnel from the BMTF Standing Organization and leaders
of BMTF medical modules to train in a simulated operational environment. The scenario
focused on the combined effects of natural disasters impacting civilian populations and critical
infrastructure.
The exercise tested and validated BMTF activation procedures, strengthened coordination and
interoperability, and enhanced decision-making in complex crisis situations — without
deploying real forces or equipment.
Through TTX 2026, BMTF once again demonstrated its strong commitment to regional
cooperation, operational readiness, and effective military medical support in times of crisis.

18 February 2026 Belgrade, Republic of Serbia

On 18 February 2026, the Balkan Medical Task Force (BMTF) conducted key activities of the Table Top Exercise (TTX) as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance operational medical readiness and interoperability in a multinational environment.
The day’s programme focused on operational planning and command-and-control processes, beginning with a Table Top Exercise briefing and scenario-based discussions. Presentations addressed the general exercise plan, scenario development, and exercise specifications, followed by briefings on Standard Operating Procedures related to BMTF regional deployment.
Subsequent sessions were dedicated to the activation framework of the BMTF, including the mandate for activation and the development of the Warning Order (WARNO) and Operational Order (OPORD). These activities aimed to validate activation procedures and ensure a shared understanding of command responsibilities and decision-making processes.
Further activities on 18 February included briefings on medical reporting and operational documentation, covering the Daily Medical Situation Report (MEDSITREP), Mass Casualty (MASCAL) incident reporting.
The programme continued with Communication and Information Systems (CIS) training for Module Leaders and key personnel, combining theoretical instruction with practical application. The day concluded with a structured discussion and delivery of Standard Operating Procedures to reinforce standardized medical care delivery and ensure a common operational understanding among all participants.
At the end the medical personnel build the hospital and did some final preparations for the upcoming activities for tomorrow.

On 26 January 2026, the Balkan Medical Task Force (BMTF) welcomed Lt Col Tore Mehus, representative of Norway, to the BMTF premises.

Norway remains one of the BMTF’s key partners, continuously supporting the development of a ready and professional multinational medical structure capable of responding to crises in the Western Balkans and beyond.

In addition to education and training, Norway has provided vital operational equipment, including generators and trolley, enhancing the mobility and operational readiness of the BMTF Standing Organization within the CRO.

We sincerely thank Norway 🇳🇴 and Lt Col Tore Mehus for their continued commitment to strengthening the capabilities of the BMTF.

59th Meeting of the BMTF Steering Board Held in Sarajevo

During the period 9–12 December, the 59th Meeting of the Balkan Medical Task Force (BMTF) Steering Board was successfully organized and held in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The meeting was attended by representatives of the Steering Board and Standing Organization member countries — Albania (ALB), Bosnia and Herzegovina (BIH), North Macedonia (MKD), Montenegro (MNE), Serbia (SRB), and Slovenia (SVN) — as well as BMTF partners Norway, represented by LTC Tore Mehus, and the United States, represented by Major Shana Vaughan (USSAFE) and LTC Shelly Brackman (Ohio).

The meeting was chaired by Mr. Krste Malinkovski, Chairman of the BMTF Steering Board.

The primary purpose of the meeting was to discuss and approve the BMTF Logistic Concept prepared by the Standing Organization, and to review the BMTF legal documentation, including the Agreement and Memorandum of Understanding. These discussions aimed at harmonizing the legal framework governing BMTF engagement both within and beyond the Western Balkans.

A significant focus of the meeting was the planned participation of the BMTF in the NATO joint exercise “Vigorous Warrior 2026” in Estonia, which will require coordinated efforts from all member countries and partners to ensure successful multinational participation.

The Steering Board also reviewed the BMTF Annual Activity Plan for 2026, highlighting several key activities, including HOTO and framework nation arrangements, as well as preparations for the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the BMTF.

A special feature of this meeting was the participation of representatives of the European Peace Facility (EPF), represented by Ms. Anne Cler Marangoni, and the Executive Director of the International Trust Fund (ITF). During the discussions, the strategic importance of EPF support was emphasized, particularly in the modernization of equipment and enhancement of BMTF capacities for fulfilling its commitments in the region and beyond.

As part of the official program, participants visited the medical unit of the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina, where they were introduced to medical equipment and tools donated through EPF funds implemented via the ITF.

In addition to the working sessions, the host nation organized a visit to one of the natural attractions of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the Ministry of Defence of Bosnia and Herzegovina hosted an official dinner in honor of all meeting participants.

The 59th Steering Board Meeting reaffirmed the strong cooperation among BMTF member states and partners, and underscored the continued commitment to strengthening multinational medical capabilities and regional security cooperation.

Today at Ilinden Barracks, Skopje, we had the privilege of welcoming members of the Association of Defense Attachés for an official visit to the Balkan Medical Task Force (BMTF).
The delegation was received with a warm welcome, followed by remarks from the BMTF Commander. Our guests were introduced to the mission, structure, and key capabilities of the BMTF, as well as updates on our ongoing projects — including the EU donation program, participation in multinational exercises, and the development of our new logistics concept “Out of Balkans.”
The visit continued with a demonstration of our CIS equipment, donated by the EPF, showcasing the technological support behind our operational readiness.

The TCCC Medical Course, organized by Swissint and hosted in North Macedonia, gathered participants from across the region — including members of the BMTF CE List. Our team proudly visited the participants and joined the certificate ceremony, celebrating their successful completion of this important training. Today we celebrated the Balkan Medical Task Force (BMTF) Day, honoring our shared commitment to regional cooperation, solidarity, and readiness in crisis response.

Since its establishment in 2010, the BMTF has grown into a strong and fully operational multinational unit — uniting medical professionals from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, and Slovenia, with the invaluable support of the Kingdom of Norway, the U.S. European Command (USEUCOM), and the European Union.

This year’s ceremony was marked by inspiring speeches, well-deserved recognitions through the presentation of BMTF Plaques and BMTF Bronze and Silver Medals, and a shared sense of pride in our joint achievements — including three successful evaluations conducted by the NATO Centre of Excellence for Military Medicine, the most recent of which took place this October in Belgrade.
Grateful to all our partners, colleagues, and distinguished guests who joined us in celebrating this important milestone.

Together, we continue to build a stronger and more resilient future for our region!!!
