2024 - 2025 A Life-Changing Experience in Macau:
My 14-Month Job Hunting Journey
Discover the personal story of a local expat in Macau—a family man with a Permanent Macau ID, a Local B Driving License, and over 15 years of professional experience in the region. Despite being dedicated, responsible, and motivated, the inability to speak Chinese proved to be a significant barrier in securing employment, even while adhering to all requirements, rules, and policies. Here’s a detailed account of my journey:
The Reality of Job Hunting in Macau:
- 14 Months of Persistent Job Searching: Over a year of daily job applications, attending interviews, and participating in job fairs.
- Zero Offers: Despite relentless efforts, no job offers were received during this period.
- Overwhelming Effort: Attended 50+ interviews, participated in multiple job fairs, submitted 500+ online job applications, created profiles with all six major casinos and hotels, actively applied via the DSAL platform, and utilised all major local job recruitment platforms—still, no success.
- Lowering Expectations: Gradually reduced job expectations, applied for internships, and sought roles with fewer benefits—yet faced rejection, primarily due to the lack of Chinese language proficiency.
- Financial and Emotional Strain: Endured 14 months without stable income, facing mounting family responsibilities, rent, daily expenses, school costs for my daughter, and emotional tolls on personal relationships and mental health.
- Unrecognised Professionalism: Despite possessing diverse skills, certification, qualifications, and a proven ability to perform multiple roles, achieve KPIs, and contribute to business growth, opportunities were denied due to biases and discriminatory practices.
The Struggle for Fairness and Respect:
For over a year, I remained determined to secure a fair job offer to support my family and make a respectable living. Offering flexibility, professionalism, and dedication, I encountered persistent challenges, including:
- Discrimination and bias
- Unfair treatment and lack of respect
- Demotivating and unprofessional experiences
A Call for Community and Support:
This journey is far from over, and I am committed to proving that professionalism, dedication, and expertise should outweigh language barriers. If you’ve faced similar experiences, feel free to share them here in a respectful and considerate manner. Let’s build a supportive community to encourage and motivate one another for a better future.
Together, we can overcome challenges and create opportunities!
Merry Christmas Everyone!
