MVO Weekly Report for the Period 05 to 12 June 2026

Activity at the Soufrière Hills Volcano remains low.

The seismic network recorded twenty one (21) volcano-tectonic earthquakes this week. Seven (7) of these occurred during a brief swarm on 11 June.

Measurements of the SO2 flux were taken from the helicopter on 10 June. There were twelve (12) traverses with an average flux of 256 tonnes per day.

Due to the large size of the lava dome, pyroclastic flows can occur at any time without warning on any side of the volcano, including Gages from where they can travel rapidly into Plymouth. Tracks across the Belham Valley can be destroyed or heavily modified by flash flooding or lahars, and caution should be exercised crossing the valley during and after rainfall.

The Hazard Level is 1. There is no public access to Zone V, including Plymouth. Maritime Zones E and W are daytime transit only between sunrise and sunset (boats may sail through the zone but must not stop). Anyone who ignores these restrictions is liable to be prosecuted.

This report along with additional information on the Soufrière Hills Volcano and the Hazard Level System can be found at the MVO website: www.mvo.ms. Old weekly reports can be downloaded from http://www.mvo.ms/pub/Activity_Reports/. You can also follow on both Facebook and Twitter.

ECONOMIC GROWTH IS KEY TO POPULATION RETENTION
Premier, the Honourable Reuben T. Meade says economic growth must remain the foundation of any successful population retention and growth strategy for Montserrat.
Speaking on the Breakfast Show, the premier addressed questions about government’s approach to increasing the island’s population, explaining that he does not believe population growth should be achieved simply by encouraging people to move to Montserrat without first creating opportunities for them.
According to the premier, as Montserrat’s economy expands and new opportunities emerge, people will be drawn to the island to fill available jobs and contribute to its development, supporting long-term population growth in a sustainable manner.
‘Again, people want to know if you should grow your population by just inviting people in. My view on it is slightly different. Build it and they will come. If you build your economy, people will come. Don't bring people first and then try to find something for them to do. Haiti, for example, has a population of over 10 million.
They have population, but can they sustain that population? When we build our economy, we will then have people coming in to fill those employment possibilities,’ Premier Meade explains.
