As part of the Montserrat Calabash Festival, the Montserrat Arts Council proudly wishes to recognize community-based Stalwarts across Montserrat.
From the Salem Community, The Honourable Margaret Dyer-Howe Award for Excellence was presented to Miss Christina Blake-Wise.
Christiana Blake-Wise was born on April 30, 1935, to Theresa Daniel and Peter Blake. The sixth of seven children, she grew up in Upper Friths, Salem, Montserrat, surrounded by the warmth, discipline, and community spirit that would shape her life’s journey.
Affectionately known as Sis. Christie, she is the proud mother of her only child, Leroy “Rocky” Martin; grandmother of four; great-grandmother of three; and great-great-grandmother of one. Family is her heartbeat. Whether close or extended, she gives her full support, celebrating birthdays, graduations, weddings, anniversaries, and standing firmly with loved ones during bereavements. Her devotion to family is one of her most defining qualities.
Sis. Christie began her early education at a private child-care facility in Flemmings, fondly remembered as Teacher Las School, where she attended from ages three to five. She often recalls joyful memories shared with schoolmates such as Doris Greaves Brumble, along with siblings and childhood friends.
She continued her primary education at the Salem Primary School and later at the Wesleyan Methodist School in Plymouth. During her early years in Salem, she worshipped at the St. James Anglican Church with her family.
Upon migrating to Curaçao, she joined the Methodist Church and became an active, dedicated member, continuing a lifelong commitment to faith, service, and Christian fellowship.
Sis. Christie is naturally energetic and community-oriented. She enjoys reading, gardening, babysitting, and—most of all—travelling. Her curiosity and love for people have carried her across islands, continents, and cultures.
Sis. Christie is deeply community-minded, with a special love for children and young people. Her home has always been a welcoming space for them, and her passion for Sunday School began in her earliest years.
She has taught children about the love of Jesus, faithfully nurturing young minds across generations. Today, she leads a lively group of children and youth every Saturday at the Salem Methodist Church Hall, known as the Good News Club.
She is a committed participant in Vacation Bible School, a member of the Women’s Group, and a joyful voice in the church choir. She has devoted herself to church duties, fundraising, preparing the sanctuary, and attending nearly every church function she is physically able to support.
Her community involvement extends beyond the church. She attends meetings of the Salem Community Development Group and maintains a keen interest in the development and progress of her beloved Salem.
At ninety-one years old and counting, Sis. Christie continues to serve faithfully in her church and community. Her desire is to keep doing good, to uplift others, and to enjoy the love and peace of the Heavenly Father who has preserved her life through many seasons.
