Fly With Bull Rays - FWBR

Fly With Bull Rays - FWBR The project “Fly with bull rays” aims at studying the populations of bull rays through the development of a photo-Identification method.

Since 2015, Bull Rays (Aetomylaeus bovinus) have been part of the 53% of native elasmobranchs in the Mediterranean Sea which are at risk of extinction. The main reason for such population decline relies on bycatch from industrial and artisanal fishing gears. Despite the critical state of this species, its population size, trends, habitat, ecology and dynamic remain unknown. The project Fly with Bu

ll Rays aims at developing the first intraspecific photo-id methodology for bull rays - a non-invasive technique to start understanding their life history and support citizen science. Through photo- ID we will determine the number of individuals, their s*x, maturity state, potential migration, their preferential habitat and site fidelity. Such information is crucial to evaluate the conservation status of the species at the global scale and apply effective protection strategies.

🇬🇧 The Bull Ray (in the front) is an endangered species of rays, which many associations have pledged to protect, including the Fly With Bull Rays - FWBR project - among other things, you can send them your photos to identify the bull rays - they have a unique stripe pattern on their backs, according to which each individual can be accurately identified. Even the Common Eagle Ray (in the back) is another endangered species of rays found in Tenerife.

Our interns have been going on free diving surveys nearly everyday this summer! They’ve encountered bunch of previously logged bull rays and met some new ones too! 😝

🐣 Meet the FWBR Interns 🐣

Bonjooooour everyone !

My name is Geraldine and I am from Belgium. I am marine biologist and I graduated from my master in marine and lacustrine science en management in October 2021.

My 3 fin-teresting facts are:

- My favorite shark is the whale shark. I have volunteered with the NGO in 2014 and this is when I fell in love with sharks 🦈

- My name is actually really Geraldine even though most of my colleague interns here at didn’t believe me because they had named a shark Geraldine at the lab for dissection. When I just arrived and went to the lab for the first time, a colleague said he was about to take Geraldine’s brain out…. 🤯

- I should really buy a new mask because everywhere I go diving, people keep telling me I look super angry under water 🤿 Let me know if you agree 😂

Always looking for dive companies and volunteers world-wide to collaborate. If interested get in touch!

🦐 Meet the FWBR Interns 🦐

Hi there. My name is Charlotte and I am currently studying Marine biology at the University of St Andrews. I am an intern at Shark-lab Malta until June 2022 and so far I am loving it.

My 3 fin-teresting facts are:
- My favourite shark is the thresher shark. Mainly cause they always look a bit worried which I relate to.

- I really don't trust dolphins, they just seem like they're up to something

- Completly unironically Jaws is one of my favourite films, as it's what sparked my interest and love of sharks

Coming soon! A sharky documentary created by Mr. Victor Bach Muñoz illustrating the use of citizen science in elasmobranch research.

In his words "I hope this documentary and website will increase visibility for shark and ray researchers seeking citizen participants/volunteers/observers"

We love the effort and think this initiative is great. We're staying tuned in for the 28th of October!

Premiering one week from today- Among Fins! This documentary by Victor Bach illustrates the utility of citizen science in shark research as a mean to support research while also engaging non-scientists into the field of science. This documentary will be available for viewing on our YouTube and IGTV- so be sure to mark your calendars for October 28th!
