"Jiena minn mindu kont tifel kien jinteressani dan il-mistjier, li nkun Spettur tas-Saħħa. Missieri kellu u għad għandu ħanut tal-ħelu u meta kont inkun hemm ħdejh, niftakar minn żmien għall-ieħor kienu jiġu persuni jispezzjonaw il-ħanut u dak li għandu x'jaqsam mal-ikel. Kont ngħid, eh tajjeb li jsir hekk. Kien jinteresani xogħolhom u niftakar li meta ġejt biex nispiċċa l-iskola sekondarja, ġie fuljett f'idi bl-għażliet ta' korsijiet ta' studju u niftakarni nsib offrut dan il-kors li jwassal għal Spettur tas-Saħħa (Health Inspector). Ix-xjenzi minn dejjem kienu jogħġbuni. Kont dħalt l-Università fejn għamilt erba' snin kors u mbagħad għamilt Masters marbut mas-Saħħa Ambjentali (Environment Health) u dan għamiltu barra minn Malta.

Issa ilni 14-il sena Spettur tas-Saħħa. Jekk ngħid li tgħallimt kollox inkun qed niżbalja. Minn żmien għall-ieħor, dejjem tiskopri ħwejjeġ ġodda għax il-parametri jinbidlu. Ix-xjenza tevolvi u l-affarijiet marbuta magħha jinbidlu u ladarba jmissu mal-ħidma tagħna, irridu nkunu aġġornati l-ħin kollu. Ir-riċerka li nwettqu tkun attwali biex f'dak li nispezjonaw, inkunu ntiżi.

Huwa xogħol li joġgħobni ħafna għal-fatt li m'għandekx xi ħaġa fissa li tispiċċa bħal rutina.

Preżentament qiegħed fis-sezzjoni tal-ispezzjonijiet fuq l-ilma. Waħda mir-rutini tiegħi hija li nissorvelja l-ilma tal-ibħra Maltin u nara li jkun tajjeb għall-għawwiema. Fi gżiritna, b'kollox għandna 87 sit, dawk li nsejħulhom ibħra naturali. Kull ġimgħa jittieħdu kampjuni biex isiru testijiet fuq il-kwalità tal-ilma. Il-pubbliku jista' wkoll jaċċessa s-sit https://healthservices.gov.mt/en/environmental fejn hemmhekk isib l-informazzjoni u t-tagħrif meħtieġ. Min jilħaq Spettur tas-Saħħa ma jaħdimx dejjem fl-istess qasam. Is-sezzjoni li preżentament qed naħdem fiha jiena bħalissa, dik tal-ittestjar tal-ilma, hija biss frazzjoni żgħira.

Aħna nfittxu li nedukaw lil dak li jkun għax wara kollox hemm is-saħħa tal-pubbliku wara kull servizz li jingħata. Hija mentalità antika dik li wieħed jibża' mill-Ispetturi tas-Saħħa daqs li kieku dawn qegħdin hemm biex iwaħħlu l-multi. Kif tersaq u tkellem lill-individwu tagħmel differenza kbira, għax tista' tbiegħdu jew iġġibu miegħek.

Bħalissa l-ikbar sfida li għandna hija l-ingaġġ ta' ħaddiema fis-settur tagħna. Nixtiequ li għandna iktar nies interessati għax hemm il-bżonn. Huwa xogħol interessanti u varjat u nieħdu gost jekk hemm min jitħajjar jidħol jistudja biex 'il quddiem jaħdem bħala Spettur tas-Saħħa." – Joseph Camilleri

“I was interested in this profession from when I was a child; that of becoming a health inspector. My father had and still has a sweet shop and when I used to be with him I remember someone used to come occasionally and inspect the shop and anything that had to do with food. I used to think that this was a good practice. I was interested in their work and remember that when I was at the end of secondary school I came across a leaflet showing the different study areas available including a course leading to that of Health Inspector. I have always loved the sciences and had entered the University and followed a four-year course followed by a Masters in Environment Health which I did abroad.

I have been a Health Inspector for the past 14 years. I would be very mistaken if I said that I have learnt everything. Parameters are constantly changing and you discover new things from time to time. Science evolves and anything connected to it changes and once they fall under our duties we need to be constantly up to date. The research we conduct needs to be timely to make sure that we are accurate during our inspections. I love my work because it is not static and does not easily become routine.

I am currently in the section that oversees water inspections. One of my roles is to observe Maltese waters and make sure they are safe for swimming. Our islands comprise 87 sites which are referred to as natural seas. Samples are gathered every week to test the water quality. The public can also access the site - https://healthservices.gov.mt/en/environmental where one can find all the information required. Once a person becomes a Health Inspector they will not be required to operate in the same sector. The sector I am currently in, that of water testing is just a small fraction.

We strive to educate the public since this effects the health of everyone in general. It is an outdated mentality that people are wary of Health Inspectors who are not there to impose fines. The way in which you approach and speak to someone makes a huge difference and determines whether you alienate or draw that person in.

At the moment our greatest challenge is recruiting workers in our sector. We wish there were more people who were interested because the need is there. It is interesting and diverse work and we would love it if others are interested in studying to ultimately take on the role of Health Inspectors.” – Joseph Camilleri

"Naħdem bħala infermiera fil-qasam tas-Saħħa Pubblika u preżentament qiegħda fid-Dipartiment tad-Determinanti Soċjali. Il-mama' hi infermiera u l-mistjier tagħha tħobbu. Jien kont naffaxxina ruħi bix-xogħol li hija kienet twettaq. Minn età żgħira, kont ngħid li rrid insir bħalL-mama' u naħdem fis-settur tas-saħħa. Filfatt, fis-sekondarja, kont għażilt is-suġġetti tax-xjenza. L-iktar kors li ħassejtu jgħajjatli kien il-BSc Nursing. Matul l-istudji tiegħi għamilt perjodu qasir nistudja l-Finlandja. Wara li ggradwajt bdejt naħdem bħala infermiera. Għal-bidu kont reliever. Kienet esperjenza li ssudatni. Għalkemm kien żmien stressanti, tgħallimt ħafna wkoll. Kien iż-żmien li bdejt ukoll il-Masters. Jiena persuna li naħseb ħafna fil-futur u kull opportunità nipprova noħodha, b’hekk mort anki għamilt kors in-Norveġja.

Fl-2018 kien iż-żmien li qlibt minn clinical għal Public Health. Jiena xorta nurse, inħobb l-interazzjoni mal-pazjent. Dan huwa mistjier li joffri wkoll toroq oħra. Waħda mill-iktar differenzi ovvji hija li infermiera f'Mater Dei ikollha l-pazjent tagħha fil-ward, filwaqt li l-klijenti tagħna fil-Public Health huma l-popolazzjoni ta' Malta u Għawdex. Hawn jittieħdu deċiżjonijiet, bil-policies, bl-istrateġiji u l-ippjanar tagħna, għall-ġid taċ-ċittadini kollha. Fis-snin tal-Covid, il-qasam tas-Saħħa Pubblika sar aktar magħruf mal-pubbliku inġenerali. Meta faqqet il-pandemija, jiena kont waħda minn dawk li kont immur nagħmel swabbing tests. Naħdem ma’ kulħadd bħala tim flimkien. U f’dak iż-żmien nista’ ngħid li hemm sibt familja oħra.

Ix-xogħol li nagħmel jien, flimkien mal-kollegi tiegħi, fl-Uffiċċju tad-Determinanti Socjali tas-Saħħa jikkonsisti f’monitoraġġ u identifikazzjoni tad-diżlivelli tas-saħħa f’Malta, kif ukoll nassisti u nipparteċipa fl-attivitajiet tal-Proġett “Establishing a National Platform to address Social Determinants of Health” li ġie mwaqqaf fl-2018. Determinanti soċjali huma dawk il-fatturi esterni li jistgħu jaffettwaw is-saħħa tal-individwi, bħall-edukazzjoni, il-kuntest soċjali, il-housing, l-ambjent u l-finanzi.

Waħda mill-iktar ħwejjeġ li nagħtiha valur fix-xogħol tiegħi hi li nkun qrib tal-persuni li naħdem magħhom. Kull opportunità li tiġi quddiemi jiena noħodha, basta nimxi skont il-valuri tal-ħajja tiegħi u li din twassalni għal titjib fl-għajxien tiegħi." – Sarah Pace

“I am a nurse in the Public Health and I am currently working with the Social Determinants of Health Department. My mother is a nurse and she loves her profession. I used to be captivated by the work she performed. From a young age, I knew that I wanted to follow in her footsteps and work in the health sector. In fact, I had chosen the science subjects at secondary school. The course that attracted me most was the BSc in Nursing. During the course of my studies, I spent a short while studying in Finland. I started working as a nurse after graduating. At first, I was a reliever. It was an experience that made me stronger and even though it was a stressful period, I learnt a lot. At the time I had started my Masters. I am the type of person who thinks a lot about the future and tries to make the best out of any opportunities which arise. That is why I also followed a course in Norway.

In 2018 I changed my role from clinical to Public Health. I am still a nurse and love interacting with patients. This is a profession that opens a number of doors. The most obvious difference is that a nurse at Mater Dei follows patients in the ward whilst our clients in the Public Health are the whole population of Malta and Gozo. Here decisions pertaining to policies, strategies and planning concerning all citizens are taken. During the Covid pandemic, the Public Health became more known with the public in general. When the pandemic broke out I was one of those administering swab tests. I work with everyone as a team, and during that period I can easily say I found another family.

The work I perform together with my colleagues in the Social Determinants of Health Department consists of the monitoring and identification of the difference in the levels of health in Malta together with assisting and participating in activities connected to the Project “Establishing a National Platform to address Social Determinants of Health” which was set up in 2018. Social determinants are those external factors that can affect the health of an individual, like education, social context, housing, environment and finance.

One of the main factors I value most in my line of work is to be close to the people I work with. I will take up any opportunity that presents itself as long as it does not go against my personal values.” – Sarah Pace
