The Special Education Needs Authority (SENA) Act 2018 established the SENA as a statutory body to regulate and facilitate evidence-based policies and quality provisions in special and inclusive education in Mauritius. This addressed the absence of a comprehensive regulatory framework and issues pertaining to standards, efficiency, accountability, and transparency in the special education sector.

Message from the Chairman Dr Veemen K Appadu of the Special Education Needs Authority on the Occasion of Teachers’ Day – Mauritius

On this special occasion of Teachers’ Day, I wish to extend my heartfelt appreciation to all the dedicated educators across Mauritius—our teachers, support teachers, teacher’s assistants, carers, and all those who work closely with learners with special educational needs.

Your unwavering dedication, compassion, and resilience are a source of strength and hope for our children and their families.

You do more than teach—you nurture, guide, and empower every learner to reach their full potential.

At the Special Education Needs Authority (SENA), we recognise the important role you play in our education system.

We are deeply aware of the challenges you face daily—often quietly and without fanfare—and we honour your tireless commitment to inclusive education.

Whether you are in the classroom, offering therapeutic support, assisting with care, or contributing through administrative roles, your work is invaluable to the nation.

You are shaping a more inclusive Mauritius, where every child is given the opportunity to thrive, regardless of their abilities.

Today, we celebrate not only your professional excellence but also the deep sense of humanity and empathy you bring to your work.

Thank you for being champions of inclusion, advocates of dignity, and unwavering pillars of support to our learners and their families.

Let us continue working together to build a future where every Mauritian child feels seen, supported, and valued.

Happy Teachers’ Day!
With sincere gratitude,
Dr. Kalisetty Appadu Veemen

*Chairman Dr Veemen K Appadu Attends Inauguration of Renovated Gymnasium for the Deaf Community.*

On Thursday, 18 September 2025, Chairman Dr. Veemen Kalisetty Appadu attended the inauguration ceremony of a newly renovated gymnasium, a project spearheaded by the Society for the Welfare of the Deaf in collaboration with Rotary District 9220.

The gymnasium was officially inaugurated by His Excellency Robert Hungley, G.O.S.K., Vice President of the Republic of Mauritius, the District Governor 2025–2026 of Rotary Club Bernard Leong Son and Mr. Cherubsingh Cally, President of the Rotary Club of Le Réduit.

The event took place in Beau Bassin and marks a significant milestone in the ongoing commitment to youth empowerment and community service.

Such an initiative stands as a symbol of service, community engagement, and enduring commitment to the development and well-being of the youth, particularly within the deaf and hard-of-hearing community. 💪🏽❤️

🇲🇺 **Tribute to Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam on His 125th Birth Anniversary **🇲🇺
By the * Special Education Needs Authority (SENA)*

Today, SENA proudly joins the *Honourable Prime Minister, Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam*, and the *Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Mahend Gungapersad*, in paying heartfelt tribute to *Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam – the Father of our Nation* – as we commemorate the 125th anniversary of his birth.

*Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam’s* lifelong dedication to justice, equality, and education for all laid the foundation for a more inclusive Mauritius. He championed the belief that education is not a privilege, but a fundamental right — a belief that still guides our mission at SENA today.

“ No child should be excluded from education.”
These words echo through time and remain central to our purpose.

On this significant occasion, we honour SSR’s legacy — one that reminds us that true national progress lies in empowering the most vulnerable among us.

At SENA, we reaffirm our commitment to ensuring equitable access to quality education and support services for every child, regardless of ability or special educational needs.

✨ May SSR’s vision continue to inspire our path toward a more inclusive, accessible, and compassionate Mauritius. ✨
