Building on the challenges identified earlier, these strategies translate key issues into a shared vision for Malé’s future. They show how environmental, economic, and social concerns can be addressed through people-centered planning—supporting better movement, comfort in a changing climate, adaptability, inclusion, safety, and a stronger sense of place. Together, they guide a more resilient, livable, and inclusive urban transformation for the city.

We’ll be sharing more on the actions and initiatives under each strategy in upcoming posts.

Rethink Malé’ City | 2nd Public Consultation

The second Public Consultation brought together voices, ideas, and perspectives as we shared key findings, concepts, and strategic directions to Rethink Malé’ City.

The session focused on reimagining land use, public spaces, mobility, culture, and community life—grounded in real data, lived experiences, and long-term sustainability. Through open dialogue and constructive feedback, we explored how Malé’ can evolve into a more inclusive, livable, and people-centered city.

This consultation marks an important step in shaping a shared vision for Malé’—one built not just for the city, but with its people. More conversations, refinements, and collective action ahead.

At 667 people per hectare, Malé is nearly 4.5x denser than London and 5.7x denser than the UN-Habitat recommendation of 150 people per hectare.
But here's the question: Does closeness equal convenience?
When density outpaces infrastructure—roads, schools, services, parking—proximity becomes crowding. Malé's extreme density works against livability, not for it.
True convenience comes from smart urban planning that balances density with accessibility, capacity, and quality of life.
Can we redesign Malé to make closeness work for us?
