SHA DONATES PORTABLE WATER LABORATORY TO DOWA COUNCIL

Dowa District Council has on Tuesday September 1, received a portable water quality testing laboratory from Self Help Africa (SHA) to strengthen the provision of safe and clean drinking water in the district.

Dowa District Commissioner James Kanyangalazi thanked SHA for the donation, describing the equipment as an important boost to the Council’s efforts to protect communities from waterborne diseases.

Kanyangalazi said the portable laboratory will enable the council to test water from boreholes and other sources, helping to ensure that people are using water that is safe for drinking and household use.

Also, to establish and react quickly if there is any contamination.

The lab is worth MK12.8 million.

SHA Deputy Country Director responsible for Programmes, Smorden Tomoka, said the equipment will help the Council monitor water quality at rehabilitated and newly constructed water points.

Tomoka said the intervention is expected to benefit around 300,000 people in SHA’s catchment areas and forms part of the organisation’s continued support for safe water, sanitation and hygiene in Dowa.

On Friday August 18, Dowa District Council held it's 2026 - 2027 first quarter Full Council Meeting.

All Service Committees presented reports, plans and updates from their sectors.

These include Finance and Audit, Planning and Development, Public works, Health Resource, Human Resource, Education and Agriculture Service Committees.

Amongst others, the house discussed issues like CDF loans for women and youth, bursaries, plans to relocate vendors from undesignated vending spaces and create safer designated business spaces for them.

Also, plans to construct a paying car park at Mponela to reduce congestion, enhance order and also revenue generation at Mponela.

Also to improve hygiene issues at Dowa boma main market by constructing new toilet facilities.

Council Chairperson CLLR Billy Mtika thanked the committees for their reports which he said include plans which once adapted, can bring various improvements in service delivery.

On Thursday August 27, the District Executive Committee held it's monthly meeting.

During the meeting:

1. Age Africa presented an update on its End to End Program.

2. One Acre Fund updated the committee on its Tree Planting program with farmers, and LUANAR updated the house on TAGDev 2.0 Program.

3. Tiwale Limodzi Foundation introduced its Pilot Rural Clean Energy Enterprise project which was accepted with conditions.

4. The District Health Office provided an update on the Measles -Rubella campaign.

5. The District Council Secretariat also presented to the stakeholders the 2025 - 2026 Local Assembly Performance Assessment (LAPA) results (which Dowa scooped position one 🤸).

Dowa District Council has scooped position one in the 2025 - 2026 Local Assembly Performance Assessment (LAPA).

Following this, the council could receive around MK2.226 billion for implementation of projects under the Performance Based Grant (PBG). MK1.817 billion comes under the GESD 2.0, while MK408,230 million is under the Regional Climate Resilience Program - 2.

The official announcement ceremony was held on Friday July 31, 2026, at Bingu International Convention Center and was presided over by minister of Local Government and Rural Development Dr Ben Malunga Phiri.
