LEADING FROM A PLACE OF HUMILITY AND OBEDIENCE: LESSONS FROM OUR GREAT HIGH PRIEST!
[5] In the same way, Christ did not take on himself the glory of becoming a high priest. But God said to him, “You are my Son; today I have become your Father.” [6] And he says in another place, “You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.” [7] During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. [8] Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered [9] and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him [10] and was designated by God to be high priest in the order of Melchizedek. Hebrews 5:5-10 NIV
One notable thing about Jesus Christ is His humility. Though in every nature, He is God, He chose obedience and submission to the Father as His posture. Even during His earthly ministry, He did not brag about His divine nature. Had He been like some of us, the power and position He held could have tempted Him to wish to be celebrated by His disciples. Jesus did not take the glory of priesthood on Himself: it was conferred to Him by the Father. He was appointed to the office of priest to offer a perfect sacrifice for humanity. It was the God the Father who said, "You are my Son, today I have become your Father; You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek!" Unlike Aaron and his descendants, Jesus's priesthood is forever and is devoid of sin. Aaron and his descendants had to offer sacrifices for themselves first before they could present gifts and sacrifices for the people and they could hold office only as they live. Jesus is a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek, One without beginning and without end!
In His priestly role, Jesus Christ did not use His position of Son of God to brag about or to impose His authority over humanity. Instead, He lived among the people as One who serves and even offered Himself as a Sacrifice for the sins of human. He was both the Great Hugh Priest and the Perfect Lamb for the ultimate sacrifice for humanity! As high priest, He offered prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the One who could save Him from death; and He was heard due to His reverent submission. He did not use His divine connections to take shortcuts in performing this role! But He subjected Himself to everything required for the office! Son, though He was, He learned obedience and submission from what He suffered! This is what qualified Him the glory and honour that were conferred to Him: He earned them. He was made perfect and He became the Source of eternal salvation for all who obey Him! And as great High Priest, He still represents us before the Father.
What is out take home from all this? First, we can approach the throne with confidence to gain mercy for Christ still occupies the role of Great High Priest. Secondly, we must learn obedience and submission from Him regardless of whatever roles and positions we may hold in this life! Our positions and roles together with all associated powers and privileges we may have are temporary and should not corrupt our minds. And lastly, we must invite others to meet the Source of their salvation.
