MOVING BEYOND THE ELEMENTARIES: RAISING STRUCTURES ON THE ALREADY LAID FOUNDATION

Hebrews 6:1-Therefore let us move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ and be taken forward to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God, [2] instruction about cleansing rites, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. [3] And God permitting, we will do so. Hebrews 6:1-3 NIV

The framers of the aims of SCOM Associates Fellowship (SCOM-AF) were at their best to advance the understanding Christian and professional growth. To this effect they crafted aim number five which among others seeks to encourage members to seek the highest standards of Christian and professional conduct. It delves into the understanding of making progress towards the best we can be, living above reproach. According to our passage today, the believers were being implored to move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ and be taken forward to growth and maturity.

Repentance from acts that lead to death refers to "dead works" and these were the common religious practices or rituals that the people were found of. Without believing in God through the ultimate price paid by Jesus the High Priest, the rituals were lifeless. Unfortunatelly the believers could not grasp this. They needed to start building on the foundation, that is to say gaining more knowledge in the divine matters of the Lord. Many are the times believers are stuck with the basic routines in the church. Most religious activities are mostly centered within the church or fellowship with very little space for believers to go out and be salt in the society. It is like an endless application of salt or basal fertilizer to the same plant. The foundation is never meant to be the structure: it is meant to the base of the structure that is erected on it! Religious routines have the tendancy of dwarfing faith in God but trusting in the excellence of the observance of the non essentials.

Consider your walk in the faith, what could be some of the basic practices that keep you to remain in the same stage? God permitting, are you ready to grow up in faith and learn more from Him?

THE PASSION OF TEACHERS: WHEN LEARNERS REMAIN STUCK IN THE BASICS

Hebrews 5:11-We have much to say about this, but it is hard to make it clear to you because you no longer try to understand. [12] In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! [13] Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. [14] But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil. Hebrews 5:11-14 NIV.

Just as every good teacher would do, the capacity of the learners to grasp more determines the depth and bredth of the lesson. Low capacity usualy drags progress as teachers try to find different techniques to clarify their first lesson. According to our passage, there was more to be taught but the limiting factor was, sadly, the believers' withdrawal from making effort to understand and apply the teaching of the appostles. The teacher laments that the believers in question were stuck in elementary truth. Contrary to the expectation to grasp the teaching first time, they could not. They remained spiritual infants and, therefore not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. There is no better way of defining spiritual matuity than testing the quality of moral uprightness and justifiable conduct before God and people. Most of the mess the church finds itself in today is as a result of believers' withdrawing from efforts to understand Jesus' teaching and to live righteous. And because people are stuck in the elementaries of the faith, many preachers will always have ready following with their milk, same people receiving Jesus again and again and not ready to go and make disciples or live impactful lives.

In principle, exploits are a result of application and constant use of good lessons that have been learnt. If we chose to make constant use of Bible teaching we would have trained ourselves to distinguish good from evil. By this, the church would have made exploits in curbing the many problems we find ourselves in due to evil conduct. It is very unfortunate that the church is still sending people into the private and public sector who can't distinguish good from evil. Are the messages spoken unto us not enough to make us live an impactful life? Dont we have the spiritual hunger to search and learn more about the ministries of our Lord Jesus Christ? When we apply what the Lord has taught us heavens open more platforms, or widens our teritorry to display the character of Christ in us. As long as we live like spiritual infants we remain stunted in the elementaries, being tossed back and forth by every wind of teaching coming from deceitful men and women.

LEADING FROM A PLACE OF HUMILITY AND OBEDIENCE: LESSONS FROM OUR GREAT HIGH PRIEST!
[5] In the same way, Christ did not take on himself the glory of becoming a high priest. But God said to him, “You are my Son; today I have become your Father.” [6] And he says in another place, “You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.” [7] During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. [8] Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered [9] and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him [10] and was designated by God to be high priest in the order of Melchizedek. Hebrews 5:5-10 NIV

One notable thing about Jesus Christ is His humility. Though in every nature, He is God, He chose obedience and submission to the Father as His posture. Even during His earthly ministry, He did not brag about His divine nature. Had He been like some of us, the power and position He held could have tempted Him to wish to be celebrated by His disciples. Jesus did not take the glory of priesthood on Himself: it was conferred to Him by the Father. He was appointed to the office of priest to offer a perfect sacrifice for humanity. It was the God the Father who said, "You are my Son, today I have become your Father; You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek!" Unlike Aaron and his descendants, Jesus's priesthood is forever and is devoid of sin. Aaron and his descendants had to offer sacrifices for themselves first before they could present gifts and sacrifices for the people and they could hold office only as they live. Jesus is a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek, One without beginning and without end!

In His priestly role, Jesus Christ did not use His position of Son of God to brag about or to impose His authority over humanity. Instead, He lived among the people as One who serves and even offered Himself as a Sacrifice for the sins of human. He was both the Great Hugh Priest and the Perfect Lamb for the ultimate sacrifice for humanity! As high priest, He offered prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the One who could save Him from death; and He was heard due to His reverent submission. He did not use His divine connections to take shortcuts in performing this role! But He subjected Himself to everything required for the office! Son, though He was, He learned obedience and submission from what He suffered! This is what qualified Him the glory and honour that were conferred to Him: He earned them. He was made perfect and He became the Source of eternal salvation for all who obey Him! And as great High Priest, He still represents us before the Father.

What is out take home from all this? First, we can approach the throne with confidence to gain mercy for Christ still occupies the role of Great High Priest. Secondly, we must learn obedience and submission from Him regardless of whatever roles and positions we may hold in this life! Our positions and roles together with all associated powers and privileges we may have are temporary and should not corrupt our minds. And lastly, we must invite others to meet the Source of their salvation.

CALLED, PRIVILEGED AND HELD ACCOUNTABLE BEFORE GOD AND MEN!
[1] Every high priest is selected from among the people and is appointed to represent the people in matters related to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. [2] He is able to deal gently with those who are ignorant and are going astray, since he himself is subject to weakness. [3] This is why he has to offer sacrifices for his own sins, as well as for the sins of the people. [4] And no one takes this honor on himself, but he receives it when called by God, just as Aaron was. Hebrews 5:1-4 NIV

We saw in our previous episode that Jesus is our Great High Priest who is able to empathize with us by virtue of becoming man. He fully understsnds human weaknesses even though He, Himself, did not sin. Today, we continue reflecting on the priestly office with focus on men who took up this office. As the Scripture shows us, the priestly office was endowed with honor and special respect since the priest was appointed to represent the people in matters relating to God. The priest was offering gifts and sacrifices on behalf of the people of God! Chosen from men, the priest was able to empathise with humanity for he too was human. He understood their struggles and weaknesses for he shared the same experiences with them. Unlike Jesus, this priest was prone to sin and so would he first offer sacrifices for his own sins before he could do so on behalf of the people.

The priests was privileged to assume this role on account of their calling from God who and nothing else. God called Aaron and his descendants to the priestly office not for their exceptional qualities in righteousbess: it was purely an act of His grace. The priest would thus deal gently with those who were ignorant and going astray because he was subject to the same human weaknesses and flaities! This was an honour received from God and who established the priestly office among His people. As such the priest was meant to humble himself both before God who appointed him and his fellow humanity whose matters he presented before the Lord! Graciously, in the New Covenant, all believers are called to a royal priesthood as God's chosen people; we are a holy nation called to offer sacrifices of praise to God! What a privileged people we are!

Those who are called to serve humanity in matters related to God are required to be faithful knowing that they are nothing more but stewards. If God promoted them to this office, He could demote them as. It is thus a requirement that we have been given a trust, we must prove faithful in all matters of conduct otherwise we would bring shame to the office and risk removal and reprisal from God!
