It has been a very busy week for the Commission!

From 11th to 12th August, the National Children’s Commission (NCC) was on the ground conducting monitoring visits in Blantyre and Zomba, led by Commissioner Lyka Milanzi and Commissioner Dr Lucy Kachapila.

In Blantyre, the team visited Mpemba Reformatory Centre to assess progress since the 2024 assessment. The facility has made notable progress, including improved access to clean water through a solar-powered water system, acquisition of a bus, improved food security and the establishment of a vegetable garden.

Despite these gains, challenges remain, including staffing shortages, inadequate bedding and clothing, infrastructure gaps, and limited recreational and educational resources.

In Zomba, the team visited Chirwa Rehabilitation Facility to assess legal compliance, standards of care, staffing, infrastructure, education, health care, psychosocial support and reintegration services. The team also engaged with children and management to understand their experiences and challenges affecting service delivery.

The visits provided an opportunity to assess progress, follow up on previous recommendations and identify areas requiring urgent attention to strengthen the protection, care and wellbeing of children.

NCC remains committed to ensuring that every child grows up in an environment where their rights, safety, dignity and wellbeing are upheld.

NCC Commissioners Visit Dedza Border Post to Strengthen Child Protection

Commissioners of the National Children’s Commission (NCC), Lyka Milanzi and Julia Chimuna, on Monday, 3 August 2026, visited the Dedza Border Post to appreciate the child protection services being offered at the facility.

The Commissioners were briefed on the child protection procedures followed by immigration officers to protect children from abuse, exploitation, and trafficking.

The Assistant Commissioner and Immigration Officer-In-Charge at Dedza Border Post, Grant Kamowa, called on the Commission to continue raising awareness on child protection and support capacity-building initiatives for immigration officers.

Dedza Border Post conducts screening of passengers travelling with children and, where necessary, refers suspected cases of child trafficking to relevant authorities for further action.

The Commissioners urged the Dedza Border Post to strengthen coordination and collaboration with other stakeholders in the district to enhance efforts in preventing and responding to child trafficking cases.

Commissioner Lyka Milanzi, who is also Chairperson of the NCC Compliance Committee, pledged to facilitate linkages between the Immigration Department and various child protection partners to ensure that the department receives the necessary support to address child protection gaps at border posts across the country.

CHIEF MALEMIA SENTENCED TO 21 YEARS IN PRISON

The National Children’s Commission (NCC) welcomes the sentencing of Traditional Authority Malemia to 21 years’ imprisonment following his conviction by the Zomba Magistrates Court for having sexual in*******se with a 16-year-old child.

The court also convicted him on the charge of procuring an abortion for the child, for which he was sentenced to an additional nine years, with the sentences to run concurrently.

This ruling is an important reminder that no one is above the law. It also reinforces the importance of accountability and the rule of law in protecting children and ensuring that violations of children’s rights are addressed through the justice system.

As traditional leaders are important duty bearers in promoting child protection and ensuring the safety and wellbeing of children within their communities, this case further underscores the responsibility that comes with leadership. Traditional leaders have a critical role to play in creating safe communities where children are protected from abuse, violence, exploitation, and other forms of harm.

The National Children’s Commission commends the prosecution team, led by Superintendent Chigawa, for their diligence and commitment in presenting the case before the court.

Commissioner Julia Chimuna followed the matter and attended court proceedings throughout the case, reflecting the Commission’s commitment to monitoring cases involving violations of children’s rights and ensuring accountability and justice for children.

The National Children’s Commission remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting children from all forms of violence, abuse, and exploitation. We will continue to monitor cases involving violations of children’s rights and advocate for accountability, justice, and safer communities for every child.

Every child has the right to be protected. Every violation must be met with accountability.

National Children’s Commission Appreciates World Vision’s Support for Children

The National Children’s Commission (NCC), in collaboration with World Vision Malawi, conducted a familiarization visit to Mpherere Area Development Programme in Ntchisi to appreciate the impactful interventions being implemented to improve the lives of children.

The visit was attended by the Chairperson of the Commission, Bishop Vincent Mwakhwawa, Commissioners Julia Chimuna, Lyka Mtambo, and Dr. Lucy Kachapila.

The Commissioners interacted with beneficiaries around Mtengo wambalame communities in T/A Kalumo.
Speaking during the visit, the Chairperson expressed gratitude to World Vision for organizing the field visit, describing it as an important opportunity for the Commissioners to witness firsthand the positive impact of the organization’s work. He commended World Vision for its investment in infrastructure development and water systems at the centre, noting that such interventions create a safer and more supportive environment for children.

He further reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to advocating for increased resources and stronger investments in child-focused programmes, emphasizing that the NCC remains dedicated to fulfilling its mandate of promoting and protecting the rights and welfare of every child in Malawi.

The National Children’s Commission is grateful to World Vision Malawi for the continued partnership and collaboration and looks forward to strengthening joint efforts to improve the well-being of children across the country.

National Children’s Commission Celebrates Kayoyo CDSS Form 4 graduands

On Friday, 19th June 2026, the National Children’s Commission joined Kayoyo Community Day Secondary School in celebrating its Form 4 farewell party, marking a significant milestone in the lives of the graduating learners.

The Commission was represented by Commissioner Julia Chimuna, who shared words of encouragement and congratulations on behalf of the Chairperson, His Worship Auxiliary Bishop Vincent Frederick Mwakhwawa, and the National Children’s Commission.

The invitation to the celebration was extended to the Commission by one of the graduands, Holiness Kalimbira, Vice Chairperson of the National Children’s Alliance and a passionate advocate for children’s rights in Malawi. Her initiative reflected the importance of young people taking leadership roles and using their voices to promote positive change in their communities.

Commissioner Chimuna encouraged the graduands to remain focused, embrace their next steps with confidence, and continue working hard towards achieving their goals. She also recognised the important role played by parents, guardians, teachers, and community leaders in supporting the learners’ educational journey.
