First Lady Professor Gertrude Mutharika has emphasized the need for the country's education facilities to always be clean and safe for both teachers and learners.

Madame Mutharika made the remarks on Friday at the Holy Family Primary School ground in Phalombe, where she presided over the launch of "My Clean School, My Pride", an initiative, driven by the Beautify Malawi (BEAM) Trust, with an aim to improve sanitation in schools.

According to Mutharika, learning facilities must always remain clean since they host students and teachers for the better part of the day.

"My vision is to foster clean schools, homes, and hospitals across Malawi to create a healthier environment. To ensure its success, this initiative, which we have launched today, will be rolled out across both public and private primary and secondary schools nationwide," she said.

Meanwhile, Member of Parliament for the area, Tiaone Hendry, praised the BEAM Trust for introducing the initiative, stating that she has fully embraced it and is ready to offer her support.

Also speaking at the event, Paramount Chief Kaduya described the initiative as a game-changer, noting that a clean and healthy population is key to national development. She urged fellow traditional leaders to join hands with the First Lady to ensure the initiative's success.

The program will see primary and secondary schools compete for sanitation awards at both the district and national levels. The competition is designed to incentivize schools to maintain high environmental and hygiene standards.

President Prof. Arthur Peter Mutharika has reiterated Malawi’s commitment to deepening its relationship with the African Union (AU), underscoring the critical role of regional cooperation in driving inclusive growth and sustainable development.

Speaking at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe during, where he received letters of credence from Ambassador Hilda Suka-Mafudze of the African Union Southern Africa Regional Office (AU-SARO), President Mutharika hailed her accreditation as a significant milestone in strengthening ties between Malawi and the continental body.

The President noted that Malawi has successfully aligned its national development goals with the continental agenda through Malawi Vision 2063, an ambitious blueprint aimed at transforming the country into an industrialized, upper-middle-income nation.

He further outlined strategic areas of ongoing and future cooperation between Malawi and the AU, which include: Agriculture and Food Security, Climate Change Mitigation, Trade, Education and Peace and Security.

In her remarks, Ambassador Suka-Mafudze said her discussions with the President also focused on regional dynamics, noting that the Southern African Development Community (SADC) remains one of the strongest regions in Africa in terms of unity and trade.

First Lady Prof. Gertrude Mutharika has said that empowering young people through education and access to sexual and reproductive health services is key to securing Malawi’s future.

Speaking in Mzuzu during the launch of the Youth Dialogue on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) and Youth-Friendly Services, an initiative under the Organization of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD), she stressed the importance of creating platforms where young people can openly discuss the challenges affecting them.

Madame Mutharika urged the youth to prioritize their education, describing it as a reliable foundation for success and responsible adulthood.

She also expressed concern over rising HIV infections among adolescents, noting that girls account for the majority of new cases, and called for urgent interventions.

In her call to action, the First Lady appealed to all stakeholders to support efforts aimed at expanding access to youth-friendly SRHR and HIV services across the country.

Yasin Salimu, a representative of the Mzuzu Youth Network, noted that underfunding and limited awareness are among the key factors hindering young people from accessing quality, youth-friendly health services.

Salimu has since appealed to the government to increase budget allocations and recruit more health workers to support the provision of SRHR services.

First Lady Prof. Gertrude Mutharika has commended Prophet Shepherd Bushiri and his wife, Mary, for fulfilling their K300 million pledge to the Beautify Malawi (BEAM) Trust.

The Bushiris made the commitment during the launch of BEAM’s 2026–2030 Strategic Plan on February 27 of this year.

Speaking today during a handover ceremony at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe, the First Lady expressed gratitude to the Bushiris for honoring their word, noting that the funds will significantly support the Trust's sanitation programmes.

"At BEAM, our mission is clear: to ensure improved sanitation across all public spaces. To achieve this, we must act together," she said. "I call upon every Malawian to join hands with us in restoring our nation’s glory by beautifying our homes, schools, hospitals, and communities."

In his remarks, Prophet Bushiri said the decision to support BEAM was driven by the initiative’s tangible impact. He noted that the Trust’s work aligns with his own vision of uplifting lives through practical, community-based interventions.

Her Excellency the First Lady Prof. Gertrude Mutharika has commended the Lions Clubs International and the Leos, for their dedicated work in health, environmental protection and youth empowerment across Malawi, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Botswana.

Speaking during the official opening of the 2026 Multiple District 412 Convention in Salima district, the First Lady described the gathering as an important platform for humanitarian leaders to reflect on their impact, build partnerships and renew their commitment to community development.

She called on delegates to deepen their support for underprivileged communities across the region, stressing the need for continued collaboration in addressing social and economic challenges affecting vulnerable populations.

The First Lady also thanked the organisation’s swift response to disasters such as the 2015 and 2019 floods and Cyclone Freddy, noting that their interventions brought relief and hope to affected districts, including Thyolo, Chikwawa and Karonga.

In his remarks, Past International Director, Lion Eli Chiti commended the First Lady for her humanitarian work through the Beautify Malawi Trust (BEAM), describing it as a strong example of commitment to uplifting vulnerable communities.

President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has urged Malawians to donate generously to the Malawi Red Cross Society to support its lifesaving work.

The President made the appeal today at Kamuzu Palace when he launched the 2026 Red Cross Day and Red Cross Flag Week.

In his speech, President Mutharika commended the Red Cross for standing with communities in times of need and called on all Malawians to support the initiative.

Leading by example, the President donated K10 million toward this year’s Flag Week.

Malawi Red Cross Society President Innocent Majiya thanked President Mutharika for the support and also appreciated the President for resuming the government subvention in 2018, noting that the funding had previously been suspended for 24 years (1994–2017).

Majiya said this support has strengthened the Society’s capacity to respond to disasters, promote health and resilience, and uphold the dignity of the vulnerable.

This year’s Red Cross Day is being held under the theme "United in Humanity" and aims to raise K200 million.

President Prof. Arthur Peter Mutharika has assured Malawians of his administration’s commitment to addressing key challenges, such as, electricity and fuel supply.

Speaking today at Goliati in Thyolo District after attending a private memorial service for his late brother, Bingu wa Mutharika, the President noted that while he inherited a government in a deteriorated state, he has made significant progress in tackling food shortages within a short period.

Regarding the fuel, President Mutharika acknowledged ongoing challenges such as the geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, saying this has impacted not only Malawi but also numerous other nations.
However, he expressed optimism that the situation would soon stabilize.

President Mutharika, who informed the gathering at Goliati of his fruitful discussions with the World Bank, assured them that he has returned to fix the economy.

The President concluded by saying that his administration has restored order and stability. He said Malawians now enjoy their rights without hindrance, contrasting this with a past where critics of the Presidency or Government were confronted with a Panga.
