Malawi Registers Historic Decline in Malaria Cases and Deaths
Lilongwe, Malawi – The Ministry of Health and Sanitation has announced remarkable progress in the fight against malaria, with the country recording one of the lowest malaria burdens in many years during the first six months of 2026.
Presenting the latest malaria surveillance data, National Malaria Control Programme (NMCP) Manager Dr. Lumbani Munthali said Malawi reported 1,173,012 malaria cases and 555 malaria-related deaths between January and June 2026, representing a significant decline compared to the same period in 2025.
According to the programme data, Malawi recorded 4,264,216 malaria cases between January and June 2025. The reduction to 1,173,012 cases in the corresponding period of 2026 translates to a 72 percent decrease in malaria cases. During the same period, malaria-related deaths declined from 1,143 in 2025 to 555 in 2026, representing a 51 percent reduction.
Dr. Munthali described the achievement as a major milestone in Malawi's efforts to control and eventually eliminate malaria.
"These figures demonstrate that the investments and interventions being implemented by the Ministry of Health and Sanitation, with support from our partners, are making a real difference. Recording such a substantial decline in both malaria cases and deaths is a significant achievement for the country and should encourage us to continue strengthening our response," he said.
He attributed the progress to the scale-up of proven malaria interventions, including widespread distribution and consistent use of insecticide-treated mosquito nets, indoor residual spraying in targeted districts, improved access to early diagnosis and effective treatment, malaria vaccine, strengthened disease surveillance, community engagement initiatives, and the dedication of health workers across the country.
Despite the encouraging results, Dr. Munthali cautioned that malaria remains a major public health threat and urged Malawians not to relax their prevention efforts.
"While we celebrate this progress, we must remain vigilant. Every malaria case and every malaria death is preventable. Communities should continue sleeping under insecticide-treated mosquito nets every night, seek prompt testing and treatment for fever, and support all malaria prevention initiatives. Together, we can defeat malaria in our beautiful nation," he said.
The Ministry of Health and Sanitation has reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining the gains made through continued investment in malaria prevention, diagnosis, treatment and surveillance. The Ministry will also continue working closely with local communities, district councils, civil society organizations and development partners to accelerate progress towards a malaria-free Malawi.
The latest results underscore the impact of coordinated national efforts and provide renewed hope that Malawi is on the right path towards significantly reducing the burden of malaria and achieving its long-term malaria elimination goals.
