AUGUST IS ASEAN MONTH

Pursuant to Proclamation No. 282, the Philippines observes ASEAN Month every August to commemorate the founding of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on 08 August 1967. The observance seeks to promote greater public awareness and appreciation of ASEAN’s role in fostering regional peace, stability, cooperation, and sustainable development.

For nearly six decades, ASEAN has since grown into an 11-member regional community and has strengthened regional cooperation across the political-security, economic, and socio-cultural pillars.

This year, the celebration of ASEAN’s 59th founding anniversary is particularly significant for the Philippines as it currently serves as ASEAN Chair. Under the theme "Navigating Our Future, Together," the Philippines remains committed to advancing regional peace and stability, strengthening economic integration, promoting innovation and digital transformation, and ensuring that the benefits of growth reach all sectors of society.

Guided by the principles of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia, the Philippines looks forward to a future defined by solidarity and collective progress as it works with fellow ASEAN member states toward a more peaceful, resilient, and prosperous Southeast Asia.

The Embassy proudly joins the commemoration of ASEAN’s founding anniversary in solidarity with the ASEAN community and in reaffirming its shared commitment to ASEAN’s visions and aspirations.

Happy ASEAN Month!

EMBASSY MARKS WORLD DAY AGAINST TRAFFICKING IN PERSONS WITH SEMINAR ON PREVENTION AND INTERVENTION STRATEGIES

KUALA LUMPUR, 30 July 2026 – The Philippine Embassy joined the commemoration of World Day Against Trafficking in Persons with a seminar for its personnel and Filipino community leaders on “Standing Together Against Human Trafficking: Prevention & Intervention Strategies.”

The seminar, held on 18 July 2026 at the Embassy’s Sentro Rizal, focused on the theme “Trapped behind the scam” and had as resource speakers Atty. Josyli A. Tabajonda, Senior Assistant State Prosecutor of the National Prosecution Service of the Department of Justice, and Ms. Nur Farah Hani Abd Hamid, National Programme Officer for Counter Trafficking from the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

In her welcome remarks, Ambassador Maria Angela A. Ponce noted that the Philippine Embassy in Kuala Lumpur is at the front lines of the fight against human trafficking, as Malaysia is both a destination and a complex transit hub for human trafficking networks. She also noted that while traditional forms like labor exploitation and s*x trafficking remain persistent threats, governments now encounter with increasing frequency the threat of trafficking women for surrogacy, cyber trafficking and forced criminality. In this regard, she stressed the importance of closer bilateral and regional cooperation in fighting trafficking. She also highlighted the critical role that Filipino community leaders have in raising awareness and providing assistance to victims of trafficking.

Atty. Tabajonda discussed the role of the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking (IACAT) and outlined the Philippines’ statutory framework on anti-trafficking. She also examined current and emerging trends and community-based prevention and defense mechanisms, stressing that stronger partnerships among government agencies and various organizations play a vital role in preventing trafficking and building safer communities.

Ms. Abd Hamid spoke on the IOM’s efforts in combatting trafficking, including strengthening capacity-building of policy and law enforcement agencies. She also provided a situationer on human trafficking in Malaysia, including relevant legal frameworks and the nature of trafficking cases. She also discussed trends in trafficking affecting Filipinos.

The United Nations declared July 30 of each year as World Day Against Trafficking in Persons in 2014.

The Embassy reaffirms its commitment to promote awareness on human trafficking and support collaborative efforts to protect victims and survivors with sensitivity and responsibility. END.

EMBASSY ATTENDS SCREENING OF REPUBLIKA NG PIPOLIPINAS AT 9TH MALAYSIAN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

Kuala Lumpur, 27 July 2026 – The Embassy, represented by Cultural Attaché Jesher Micha Carolino, attended the screening and Q&A session of Republika ng Pipolipinas, a film by Filipino director Renei Dimla, at the 9th Malaysian International Film Festival (MIFFest) on 23 July 2026 at MyTOWN Shopping Centre.

Republika ng Pipolipinas follows the story of a disillusioned farmer, Corazon Vitug, or Aling Cora, who protests the government's plan to seize her land and home by renouncing her Filipino citizenship and establishing her own micronation. As they race against time amid mounting threats to their freedom, Aling Cora and the citizens of the Republika ng Pipolipinas demonstrate that what truly defines a nation is neither its territory nor its history, but the courage and resilience of its people.

The film was among the six motion pictures featured in the “ASEAN on Screen” category, which highlights the vibrant stories, diverse cultures, and bold cinematic voices of Southeast Asia.

Cultural Attaché Carolino congratulated Director Dimla and Ms. Geraldine Villamil, who portrayed the lead character Aling Cora, and conveyed the Embassy's continued support for Philippine cinema and initiatives that promote Filipino storytelling on the international stage.

The 9th MIFFest was held from 18 to 25 July 2026 under the theme "Resonance”. It underscored that films are not confined to the screen but continue to resonate in conversations, inspire hope among those striving for survival and dignity, and challenge audiences to reflect. END
