OGSG INAUGURATES STEERING COMMITTEE, TECHNICAL WORKING GROUP ON NEW INDUSTRIAL POLICY

The Ogun State Government has inaugurated a Steering Committee and Technical Working Group to develop a new Industrial Policy and Implementation Plan that will guide the State’s industrial development sustainably from 2027 to 2036.

The committee and technical working group comprise stakeholders from the organised private sector, development partners, including the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), inclusion-focused groups and other relevant stakeholders.

Inaugurating the committee and Technical Working Group in Abeokuta, the Commissioner for Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr. Adebola Sofela, said the Prince Dapo Abiodun-led administration was committed to developing an inclusive and forward-looking policy that would be “government-owned, stakeholder-driven, evidence-based and implementation-focused” to promote a green economy.

“Importantly, the policy will be climate-informed, promoting resource-efficient production, low-carbon industrialisation, clean and renewable energy, green financing, innovation-driven manufacturing, circular economy practices and inclusive economic growth,” the commissioner said.

Sofela urged stakeholders to actively collaborate with the government, charging them to provide practical perspectives on challenges facing businesses and reliable information that would help develop an inclusive industrial policy and implementation plan.

He assured that the government would remain committed to implementing the policy to improve the business environment and enable businesses to scale up.

The Commissioner, who described Ogun as one of the safest places to do business, said the State has become Nigeria’s industrial hub and investors’ preferred destination as a result of the deliberate policies and programmes of the Abiodun-led administration stressing that the Gateway State was determined to move beyond its status as Nigeria’s industrial hub and become Africa’s industrial hub.

Welcoming the participants, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr. Adedeji Sowunmi said the State needed a clear, coherent and forward-looking industrial policy to consolidate its position as a preferred destination for investors.

He assured members of the committee and technical working group of the government’s support to enable them to achieve their objectives.

In his goodwill message, the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, said the new industrial policy was necessary to ensure the sustainability of the State’s industrial development.

In their separate contributions, the Chairman, Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, Ogun State branch, Prince Martins Awofisayo, and the National President, Organised Private Sector Network, Dr. Femi Egbesola, said the private sector looked forward to an industrial policy that would bring positive changes to industries in the State, urging the committee to draw from the ideas incorporated into the industrial policy currently being developed for the Federal Capital Territory.

OGUN TRAINS 66 COMMERCIAL OFFICERS TO BOOST INVESTMENT DRIVE, SERVICE DELIVERY

Commercial Officers in the Ogun State Civil Service have been urged to embrace modern approaches to service delivery to strengthen the State’s investment drive and enhance trade administration.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr. Adedeji Sowunmi, gave the charge during a capacity-building programme for 66 Commercial Officers themed “Enhancing Professional Competence for Effective Trade Administration and Commercial Services,” at the Ministry’s Conference Room in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

Sowunmi, said the training was organised to equip participants with the skills required to meet the evolving demands of the business environment.

The Permanent Secretary said the programme, organised in line with the ISEYA Agenda, was designed to improve the competence of commercial officers in investment promotion, revenue generation and efficient service delivery in view of the changing business landscape.

“In today’s dynamic business environment, we can no longer rely on old methods. Investors demand efficiency, data-driven decisions and excellent customer service. This training is designed to equip you with modern commercial practices, negotiation skills, investment promotion strategies and policy implementation tools that will make you more effective in your duties,” he said.

The Permanent Secretary described Commercial Officers as key drivers of the State’s Ease of Doing Business agenda, stressing that their professionalism and capacity would largely determine the success of government efforts to attract investment, grow industries and improve internally generated revenue, urging participants to remained committed to excellence in the discharge of their responsibilities.

OGUN REAFFIRMS DRIVE TO FORMALISE INFORMAL BUSINESSES

The Ogun State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to helping businesses in the informal sector transition into the formal economy, pledging to strengthen collaboration with Business Membership Organisations (BMOs) to drive enterprise development across the State.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr. Adedeji Sowunmi, gave the assurance while receiving the leadership of the Association of Skilled and Vocational Artisans of Nigeria (ASVAN), Ogun State chapter, who paid him a courtesy visit in his Office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta to congratulate him on his recent appointment as Permanent Secretary.

Sowunmi, said Government’s commitment to business formalisation was evident in the free business name registration offered to entrepreneurs at the recently concluded Ogun State MSMEs Business Clinic 3.0, where several participants, including ASVAN members, received Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) registration at no cost, with the fees fully borne by the State government.

He said the Ministry would continue with the initiative, noting that formal registration would provide businesses greater access to grants, financing, markets and other growth opportunities.

“We provided free business name registrations for participants at the last MSME Business Clinic, and we intend to do more on that. There are numerous benefits to registering a business with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC). For instance, government grants and other support programmes are typically available only to registered businesses, among several other advantages,” Sowunmi said.

The Permanent Secretary therefore urged business associations to encourage their members to register their enterprises with the Corporate Affairs Commission.

He added that the Business Clinic also featured grants for selected entrepreneurs, while others received government support to obtain product certification from relevant regulatory agencies.

ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICERS URGED TO UPHOLD EXCELLENCE, UNITY

The newly appointed Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr. Adedeji Sowunmi, has urged Administrative Officers in the State Civil Service to remain united and uphold the values of excellence that have made the cadre a model for others.

Sowunmi, gave the charge in his Office at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, while speaking with members of the Administrative Officers Group led by the Director Administration and Supplies, Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Idowu Kehinde, who paid him a courtesy visit and presented him a roll up banner in commemoration of his recent appointment as a Permanent Secretary in the Ogun State Civil/ Public Service.

He described his elevation as divine after years of dedicated service, recalling that he joined the Ogun State Civil Service as an Administrative Officer in 2001, noting that the administrative cadre remained the live wire of every organisation and played a pivotal role in achieving institutional goals.

“I want to charge all of us, when we talk of the Administrative Officers Group, it is a group that other cadres look up to and we must keep the ball rolling. We must continue to strengthen the cadre so that it will never go backward. We must sustain the love among us and continue to work together to achieve greater heights. The sky is the limit for every administrative officer who knows his or her onions,” he said.

The Permanent Secretary lauded the love, solidarity and support extended to him by the Administrative Officers Group which is chaired by the Director, Administration and Supplies, Ministry of Finance, Mr. Johnson Ojo, appealed to members of the group to make ensure that the love existing among them continue to grow.

Earlier in her address, Director, Administration and Supplies, Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Idowu Kehinde, who led the group on the courtesy visit, said it was the usual practice of the group to honour any of its members who were elevated.

OGSG REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO MSMEs AS STAKEHOLDERS REVIEW NATIONAL POLICY

The Ogun State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to creating an enabling environment for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), to thrive as stakeholders reviewed and validated the proposed National MSME Policy (2026–2031).

The policy review and validation exercise, aimed at strengthening MSMEs growth and improving competitiveness of small businesses, was organised by the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), in collaboration with the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) in Abeokuta.

Speaking at the event, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr. Adedeji Sowunmi, said the review would provide an opportunity to identify gaps in the existing framework and develop strategies to unlock the potential of the MSME sector.

Represented by the Director of Industrial Promotion in the Ministry, Mr. Femi Adeboye, Sowunmi commended the inclusive approach adopted for the review, noting that contributions from stakeholders would help shape a policy that addresses the realities faced by businesses across the country.

“I am confident that the inputs from this workshop will guide government at all levels to design interventions that are not just on paper but that will be significantly felt in markets and factories. On behalf of the Ogun State Government, I assure you of our full cooperation in this drive. We are open to partnerships that will strengthen MSMEs in Ogun State and Nigeria at large,” the Permanent Secretary said.

He added that Ogun State remained committed to supporting initiatives that would enhance the capacity of small businesses, improve productivity and promote sustainable economic development.

In his welcome address, the State Manager, SMEDAN, Mr. Biodun Awoliyi, said the consultation was organised to gather contributions from critical stakeholders towards developing a more robust and effective MSME policy capable of strengthening the country’s business ecosystem.

OGUN EXPORT COMMITTEE TARGETS GREATER MARKET ACCESS, INVESTMENT

The Ogun State Committee on Export Promotion (SCEP) has reaffirmed its commitment to boosting the State’s export sector through improved market access, value addition and increased investment in export-oriented enterprises, as its new Chairman, Mr. Adedeji Sowunmi, presided over the committee’s meeting for the first time.

Sowunmi, who is also the new Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, made the commitment while chairing the committee’s second quarterly meeting held at the Ministry’s Conference Room in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

The SCEP chairman who was also in company of the newly appointed Director of Commerce, Mr. Sulaimon Aminu, said the committee would build on the achievements of previous leadership by promoting inclusiveness, innovation and result-driven partnerships to enhance the competitiveness of Ogun-made products in local and international markets.

“As Chairman of this Committee, I am committed to providing purposeful leadership that promotes inclusiveness, transparency, innovation and results-oriented collaboration. Together, we shall work towards identifying and addressing the challenges confronting exporters, improving the competitiveness of Ogun State products, strengthening market access, encouraging value addition and attracting greater investment into export-oriented enterprises,” he said.

Sowunmi stressed that sustainable economic growth could only be achieved through stronger collaboration among government, the private sector, development partners and the business community.

Commissioner for Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr Adebola Sofela (green cap), with the newly appointed Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Adedeji Sowunmi.

Sowunmi succeeds the immediate-past Permanent Secretary, Engr Kehinde Akintomide, who has been redeployed to the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure.

The newly appointed Permanent Secretary holds a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology from the Lagos State University and a Master of Industrial and Labour Relations from the University of Ibadan. He began his career with the Ogun State Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture before joining the Ogun State Civil Service in 2001.

With over two decades in the public service, Sowunmi has served in several Ministries, Departments and Agencies, including the Bureau of Establishments and Training, Governor's Office, Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission, Ministry of Housing, Civil Service Commission, Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, where he served as Director of Commerce before his appointment as Permanent Secretary.

A Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Local Government and Public Administration of Nigeria and an Associate Member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management, he has earned several honours for outstanding service and played key roles in major state initiatives, including the successful organisation of the 13th Gateway International Trade Fair in 2024.

SOFELA ASSURES STAKEHOLDERS OF TRANSMISSION OF OGSEDA BILL TO ASSEMBLY

Ogun State Commissioner for Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr Adebola Sofela, has assured stakeholders in the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) sector that the draft Bill seeking the establishment of the Ogun State Enterprise Development Agency (OGSEDA) will soon be transmitted to the State House of Assembly for legislative consideration.

Stakeholders had earlier validated the draft Bill, enabling the legal consultant handling the process, Capstone Legal Firm, to incorporate inputs and recommendations made during the validation exercise.

Sofela gave the assurance while receiving the revised draft Bill from the representative of Capstone Legal Firm, Barrister Eyitayo Bamisile-Oyebiyi, alongside the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ)-assigned Technical Lead for OGSEDA, Dr Segun Dada, at his office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

Present at the meeting were the Special Adviser to the Governor on Mineral Resources Development, Prof. Kayode Oyedele, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Engr. Kehinde Akintomide and the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Industry, Trade and Investment, Hon. Sunday Oyesanya.

Describing OGSEDA as a critical institution for the growth of MSMEs and the State’s economy, Sofela said the present administration was committed to institutionalising the agency to ensure its sustainability.

According to him, as an Executive Bill, the draft legislation would first be forwarded to the Office of the Governor before being transmitted to the State House of Assembly.

“We are taking it beyond a draft Bill. What we have done is to operationalise the agency, but we now want to institutionalise it. The reason for the Bill is to ensure that even after this administration, the agency can continue to carry out its mandate,” he said.

The Commissioner also commended the GIZ for its strategic partnership and expressed the willingness of the State government to sustain its collaboration with the development institution.
