Strengthening action in Nigeria is essential for protecting ecosystems, securing livelihoods, and ensuring long-term food security.

Through the effective implementation of Nigeria’s National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan ( ), there is a growing focus on translating national commitments into practical, community-driven solutions. From forests to farmlands, local actions, supported by strong partnerships are critical to restoring degraded landscapes, promoting sustainable agriculture, and enhancing climate resilience.

Equally important is ensuring that smallholder farmers, women, and youth remain at the center of these efforts, as they play a key role in managing natural resources and sustaining food systems.
By working together - government, development partners, the private sector, and communities, Nigeria can accelerate progress toward biodiversity conservation while strengthening food security and building a more resilient future for all.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is championing a Financing Framework for Nigeria, advancing a critical shift toward more sustainable and responsible agricultural financing.

With funding support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF), FAO, through the Project, convened key stakeholders, including the European Union in Nigeria, the Central Bank of Nigeria, financial institutions, government ministries, departments and agencies, and other development partners in Lagos (May 20–21) to promote incentive-based, deforestation-free credit for Nigeria’s agricultural sector.
Discussions underscored the growing importance of global sustainability standards, particularly the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). FAO acknowledges its partners for their continued financial and policy support in advancing responsible, traceable, and sustainable commodity value chains.

The FAO Representative in Nigeria, Dr. Hussein Gadain, emphasized during the sessions that, “Global markets now demand sustainability, those who adapt will unlock new opportunities and remain competitive.”

The workshop is expected to conclude with strong stakeholder commitment to ensuring that farmers, SMEs, women, and youth remain central to Nigeria’s green transition.

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and partners have inaugurated the Joint Technical Working Group (JTWG) for the Green Climate Fund's Scaling-Up Resilience in Africa’s Great Green Wall ( ) Programme in Nigeria. The platform will provide technical guidance and strengthen coordination for implementing restoration activities under the Great Green Wall initiative. 🌿

The programme supports efforts to improve livelihoods, strengthen climate resilience, and promote sustainable land management across vulnerable communities in northern Nigeria. 🇳🇬🌍

Equipping teachers and extension agents with practical skills today means stronger food systems tomorrow🌾

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security have concluded the Junior Farmer Field and Business Schools Training of Trainers under the Nourishing Nigeria project.

The programme equipped participants from five states with practical knowledge in climate-smart agriculture, nutrition-sensitive food production and agribusiness, with certificates presented at the close of the training.

Sustainable landscapes are key to resilient food systems 🌿

This week, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in partnership with the Government of Nigeria and with support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF), is convening the Second Participatory Informed Landscape Approach (PILA) Multi-Stakeholder Workshop under the GEF7 Food Systems, Land Use and Restoration (GEF7 Folur Nigeria) Project.

The workshop was opened by the Executive Governor of Ondo State, H.E. Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, with participation from the Deputy Governor, Dr Olayide Adelami, the Chief of Staff, Prince Segun Omojuwa, and the Hon. Commissioner for Agriculture and Forestry, Engr. Olaleye Akinola.

The engagement supports Integrated Landscape Management and sustainable food systems across Nigeria’s Niger Delta landscapes.

Recently, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) convened stakeholders in Cross River State under the UK Partnering for Accelerated Climate Transitions (UK PACT) project for the Validation Workshop on the Draft Mangrove Ecosystem Management Plan, AFOLU Policy Analysis and Integrated Coastal Zone Management Plan.

Strengthening partnerships at the sub‑national level remains critical to driving sustainable agriculture and food systems transformation in Nigeria.
As part of ongoing high‑level engagements, FAO Representative in Nigeria Dr. Hussein Gadain, met with the Ogun State Head of Civil Service (HoS) to discuss strategic pathways for scaling up impact, particularly in aquaculture and fisheries within the state.
The engagement underscored the importance of institutionalizing FAO-supported interventions (aimed at strengthening aquaculture value chains and improving livelihoods within fish farming clusters in the state) to ensure sustainability, while also exploring innovative development financing mechanisms that can help expand proven models across other high‑potential value chains and geographic areas.
