BREAKING: UBA UMUAKA LAWYER AT CENTRE OF ₦24 MILLION LAND DEAL DISPUTE AS NBA PETITION, REFUND AGREEMENT AND EFCC RECORDS SURFACE

Uba Umuaka legal practitioner, Mr. Godwin Ifeayinchukwu Udeagwu, has become the subject of renewed scrutiny over a long-running dispute involving an alleged ₦24 million land transaction, as documents reviewed by Umuaka News24 including a petition to the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), a signed refund agreement and records referencing an EFCC investigation have brought the matter back into public focus.

The case which has reportedly remained unresolved for years, centres on Plot C/8, Institutional and Staff Quarters Layout, New Owerri, a property which the complainant, Mr. Kingsley Obinna Aso of Ihitte Afara of Mbaitoli Local Government Area says he purchased after relying on representations allegedly made during the transaction.

A petition dated 6 May 2019 submitted to the Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association Owerri Branch by the law firm of Eddy Onyema & Co., lays out a detailed account of how the disputed transaction allegedly unfolded.

According to the petition, the transaction began in February 2017, when the seller lawyer allegedly presented himself as Mr. Okechukwu Onyema claiming to be the lawful owner of the property.

The petition states that Mr. Aso, who is based in the United Kingdom paid the agreed purchase price through relatives in Nigeria and was issued a Power of Attorney.

However, the dispute allegedly escalated when he demanded the original allocation documents for the property,Rather than receiving the original title documents, the petition alleges that he was persuaded to pay additional money on the understanding that fresh allocation documents would be processed in his name.

It further claims that the document eventually produced was an allegedly fake allocation letter dated 20 February 2017, issued in Mr. Aso's name but referencing Plot C/11 instead of Plot C/8, the land he believed he had purchased.

The petition also alleges that subsequent inquiries revealed that Plot C/8 was already entangled in litigation involving the Imo State Government and the Nigerian Shipping Company which mr Aso claimed that it was a lie.

Among the documents reviewed by Umuaka News24 is a written agreement dated 20 June 2018, in which Mr. Udeagwu allegedly undertook to refund ₦24 million to Mr. Aso.

The agreement reportedly stipulated that the refund would be completed between 20 June and 20 October 2018 and bears signatures attributed to both parties as well as witnesses, The complainant says the refund was never honoured.

Speaking to Umuaka News24, Mr. Aso alleged that the disputed property was later sold to another buyer who subsequently developed the site into a hotel.

He further claimed that despite years of pursuing the matter through law enforcement and legal channels, he has yet to recover his money.

Mr. Aso also alleged that police officers tracked using women and arrested Mr. Udeagwu on several occasions but claimed that he repeatedly secured bail and failed to honour subsequent police invitations.

He further alleged that after admitting that the land had been resold, Mr. Udeagwu issued him a ₦10 million fake cheque which he claims was returned unpaid when presented at the bank.

According to the complainant, he has spent more than ₦15 million pursuing the recovery of his money through legal and other processes.

He also alleged that other individuals may have suffered similar experiences and urged members of the public to exercise caution.

Another document cited by the complainant references an Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) investigation which allegedly identified the individual who had represented himself as Mr. Okechukwu Onyema as Udeagwu Godwin Ifeayinchukwu of Uba Umuaka,The same record allegedly links him to a law office located within the World Bank Housing Estate area of Owerri.

UMUAKA MARRIAGE RITE: CALLS GROW FOR URGENT REVIEW OF MARRIAGE COST AND TRADITIONAL RULES

Discussion on the cost and traditional requirements for marriage in Akaland is gaining momentum, following growing calls from Umuaka groups to support Mazi Chimezie Okwara’s proposal for a review of marriage expenses.

Supporters argue that reducing the financial burden could encourage marital success, increase the population of Umuaka and create opportunities for wealth and community development.

Some participants have proposed that the ₦1 million benchmark suggested by Mr Chimezie is even too much and should be reviewed downward to at most ₦500,000, with payment officially receipted by either the chairman of the kindred or the Eze of the community. Upon completion, the couple would receive the traditional blessing and proceed with their wedding arrangements.

Under the proposal, the money could be distributed by an agreed percentage among the lady’s parents, the women’s wing of the kindred, the men’s wing and the traditional authority, including an appropriate royal fee.

There are also suggestions that marriage-related funds received by kindreds could be kept until December, after which the men and women’s wings could decide collectively how the funds should be shared or invested. Advocates believe that, rather than allowing such funds to be consumed through immediate celebrations, part of the money could support business ventures and community development projects.

CALL FOR A UNIFIED POSITION

The discussion is calling on the 10 autonomous communities in Akaland to urgently convene and work towards a common position on marriage rites and costs, particularly where an Umuaka man is marrying an Umuaka woman.

Another issue gaining attention is the traditional restriction concerning the number of generations within which people are considered blood relations and therefore prohibited from marrying.

The issue was raised by Miss Chinazo, who argued that the restrictions are becoming increasingly difficult because many families in Umuaka are connected through paternal, maternal and ancestral relationships.

She suggested that the restriction could be reviewed from the fourth generation to the third generation.

Miss Chinazo further argued that people should be allowed to marry from their mother’s maternal home and father’s maternal home, provided the families are not from the same immediate nuclear family.

There are also calls for some kindreds within the same autonomous community to be permitted to marry one another, especially as some of the old kindreds have gradually developed into distinct villages and communities.

10 PGs, YOUTH LEADERS AND EZES URGED TO ACT

The 10 PGs and the 10 Youth Leaders across Akaland are also being urged to join hands with the Ezes and traditional rulers to urgently address these marriage-related issues.

Supporters believe that a thoughtful review of the existing system could remove unnecessary barriers, strengthen families, encourage young people to marry within the community and ultimately contribute to the growth and development of Umuaka.

The call is therefore for the traditional leadership and community stakeholders to look beyond today's challenges and begin asking a bigger question:

What can we change today to make Umuaka a stronger, more populated and prosperous community in the next few years?

GOV. ALEX OTTI SIGNS MoU FOR RAILWAY CORRIDOR ACCESS ROAD IN ABIA

Abia State Government Partners Nigerian Railway Corporation on Major Transport Project

Governor Alex Otti has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Abia State Government and the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) to facilitate the construction of an access road across the railway corridor in Umuahia.

The road will link Okpara Square and Akanu Ibiam Street (Goodshed) to Bende Road, as part of efforts to modernise Umuahia, ease traffic congestion and improve transportation infrastructure.

The project is expected to integrate the railway station, bus terminal and other transport facilities, strengthening Umuahia’s position as a transportation hub.

The governor has directed the Commissioners for Transport and Works, alongside the General Manager of the Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA), to commence work immediately.

The NRC delegation was led by its Managing Director, Dr. Kayode Opeifa.

Governor Otti also urged the NRC to consider expanding train services from Port Harcourt to Aba, while reaffirming Abia State’s commitment to stronger cooperation with the Federal Government on improved transportation across Abia and the Southeast.

MARRIAGE COSTS: CHIMEZIE OKWARA CALLS FOR URGENT REVIEW OF UMUAKA MARRIAGE REQUIREMENTS

An Akalite, Chimezie Okwara, has called on the leadership of Umuaka to urgently review the rising cost of marriage lists, bride price and other marriage requirements in the community.

According to Chimezie, the financial demands attached to marrying an Umuaka girl have become so high that it increasingly feels as though a man without millions of naira should not even approach an Umuaka girl for marriage.

Chimezie argued that the situation is discouraging some young men from seeking marriage within Umuaka, with some choosing to go outside the community to marry, while others postpone marriage until they become financially comfortable.

He said there is an urgent need to remove unnecessary requirements and establish a universal and reasonable marriage cost that both the rich and the poor can afford.

Chimezie suggested that the amount should be below ₦1 million or around ₦1 million, serving as a common benchmark and a financial leveller for families across different economic backgrounds.

He further proposed that once the couple and both families have given their consent to the marriage, the agreed amount could be paid officially to either the Paramount Chief of the kindred or village, who would issue an official receipt, or directly to the Traditional Ruler, in accordance with whatever system the community adopts.

According to Chimezie, such a system would provide a clear and transparent process for marriage approval while reducing the financial burden placed on young couples.

He said this would allow young men and women to focus on building their union and their future together, rather than spending millions of naira trying to satisfy what he described as unending marriage lists drafted by certain individuals without sufficient consideration of the harm they may cause.

Chimezie maintained that preserving Umuaka’s culture and traditions should not mean making marriage financially unreachable for ordinary families.

He therefore called on traditional rulers, community leaders, families and other stakeholders to urgently begin a serious conversation on marriage costs in Umuaka and consider reforms that can make marriage more accessible while preserving the community’s values.

He also expressed concern that the combination of delayed marriages, low childbirth rates and deaths could gradually affect Umuaka’s population if the situation is not addressed.
