NIGERIAN LEGION DELEGATION ATTENDS 107th AMERICAN LEGION NATIONAL CONVENTION

In a major move to elevate Nigeria’s global diplomatic standing and modernize Nigeria’s veterans’ welfare, the National Chairman of the National Council of the Nigerian Legion, Ms Grace Morenike Henry JP, led a high-powered Nigerian Legion delegation to the 107th The American Legion National Headquarters National Convention in Louisville, Kentucky.

The visit supports President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which focuses on international military partnerships, institutional reforms, and improved welfare for Nigeria’s Armed Forces veterans, in accordance with global standards and international best practices. By engaging directly with their American counterparts and participants worldwide, the Nigerian delegation sought to adapt global models in veterans’ administration including veterans’ housing, medical care, post-service transition schemes and other support frameworks.

Speaking on the significance of the convention, Ms. Henry noted that partnering with the American Legion offers a roadmap to overhaul the Nigerian Legion Act of 1964. She explained that the amendment will transition the organization from colonial-era structures to a modern veteran care system. She further explained that the reform represents a shift from colonial-era structures to a modernized and well-equipped veteran administration system.

This partnership would be expected to fast-track modern initiatives aimed at better supporting Nigeria’s ex-servicemen, wounded warriors, and the families of fallen heroes who paid the supreme sacrifice for our nation.

The convention in Louisville served as a vital and veritable platform for Nigeria to foster improved diplomatic and military relations with the United States of America, ensuring that the sacrifices of its ex-servicemen and women are not only honoured locally but recognized on the global stage.

Also on the delegation was the Nigerian Legion’s Consultant, Brigadier General BET Bello (rtd), who accompanied the National Chairman to the historic and epoch-making international gathering in Louisville, Kentucky.

On hand to welcome the delegation from the Nigerian Legion were Pam Ray, National President of the American Legion Auxiliary, and Doug Collins, United States Secretary of Veterans Affairs, among many others.

CONCERNS ON WELFARE, PAYMENTS & INTERNATIONAL ENGAGEMENTS AN ADDRESS TO ALL VETERANS

The National Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, Ms. Grace Morenike Henry JP, has issued a comprehensive address to all veterans across the country, responding to pressing concerns on welfare, outstanding entitlements, palliatives, and international engagements.

ON PENSION ARREARS & APPROVED INCREASES:

The Federal Government has given a firm assurance that all outstanding entitlements and approved pension increases will be paid. The Legion is maintaining daily follow ups with the Ministry of Finance and the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) to ensure the release of ₦500 million (2025 AFRD) and ₦200 million (2026 AFRD) pledged by the Presidency.

ON PALLIATIVES:

The Legion has formally requested that veterans be included in the Federal Government's Palliative Program. While still being processed, the Legion is setting up direct interventions including prosthetics, hearing aids, eye surgeries, wheelchairs, and empowerment grants, over 60 veterans and more than 50 widows have already benefited.

ON INTERNATIONAL ENGAGEMENTS:

The trips to the UK, US, and Canada are strategic missions to link the Nigerian Legion with established international veteran organizations. These engagements have already secured donations of medical equipment, prosthetics, and training opportunities for our veterans. The goal is to bring International Best Practices to Nigeria, including advocating for a dedicated Ministry of Veterans Affairs.

"Comrades, we sacrificed for this nation in uniform. Let us not allow our differences to destroy our unity. Remain disciplined, law abiding, and patient. Change is on the way. We are in the room, and we are fighting for you every day."

HISTORY MADE AS NIGERIAN LEGION CHAIRMAN REPRESENTS NIGERIA AT 105TH WARRIORS’ DAY PARADE IN CANADA

The National Chairman of the National Council of the Nigerian Legion, Ms Grace Morenike Henry, on Saturday represented Nigeria at the 105th Anniversary of the Warriors’ Day Parade held at the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) Grounds, Toronto, Canada.

Ms. Henry’s participation in this prestigious international event aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which seeks to elevate Nigeria’s global diplomatic standing and honor the sacrifices of its military personnel. By fostering deep collaborations with their North American counterparts, the Nigerian Legion actively advances the administration’s foreign policy objectives while reinforcing the nation’s proud heritage in global peacekeeping.

On the sidelines of the event, Nigerian Legion National Chairman Morenike Grace Henry highlighted international partnerships as key to upgrading local veteran healthcare and rehabilitation frameworks. She also lauded the President for facilitating the historic milestone, noting it marks the Legion’s first-ever participation in such global event.

The 2026 edition of the historic parade was celebrated under the theme, “Supporting Our Veterans Since First World War,” highlighting over a century of global solidarity, remembrance, and welfare for military veterans. This year also marks the 147th anniversary of the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE), with the dual event hosted at Toronto’s historic CNE grounds—a traditional hub for military tributes.

The event featured a colourful and solemn march-past parade, bringing together veterans, military personnel, and contingent leaders from various nations to honour the sacrifices of wartime heroes.

The Warriors’ Day Parade, established in 1921, remains one of the longest-running veterans’ parades in the world, serving as a vital platform for defending the dignity of those who served.

Joining the National Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, Ms. Morenike Grace Henry, at the 2026 Warrior Day Parade was Alice Ingikem Ogar, Vice President of the National Association of Retired Immigration Officers (NARIO).

THE NIGERIAN LEGION: A TRANSFORMATIVE ERA UNDER NEW LEADERSHIP

The Nigerian Legion, the official statutory body for the nation's Armed Forces veterans, is undergoing a remarkable transformation under the visionary leadership of the National Chairman, Ms. Grace Morenike Henry JP.

A SELF-SUFFICIENT INSTITUTION
Operating without direct budgetary allocation, the Legion relies entirely on donations from well-meaning corporate bodies and individuals. It maintains a close institutional relationship with the Ministry of Defence (MOD), which provides essential oversight.

A NEW ERA OF IMPACT
Globally recognized and affiliated with international veteran networks, the Legion has entered a transformative era. Ms. Henry has placed the well-being of veterans, widows, and children of fallen heroes at the forefront of her agenda.

EMPOWERMENT INITIATIVES
The Chairman initiated drives that empowered numerous veterans, as well as over 70 widows and children of fallen heroes through:

* Direct cash grants – Helping families clear debts, start businesses, and cover living expenses.
* Essential tools – Distributing grinding and sewing machines to foster long-term self-reliance.

62ND ANNIVERSARY HUMANITARIAN OUTREACH
Marking its 62nd anniversary in July, the Legion launched a massive humanitarian outreach. Elderly veterans (60+) received food and cash gifts, while able-bodied veterans received necessities and cash.

DISASTER MANAGEMENT TRAINING
The Legion collaborated with the Institute of Disaster Management and Safety Science to train and induct over 1,000 veterans as Certified Disaster Safety and Emergency Managers in three batches. They now serve as community first responders free of charge.

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY PROGRAM
The program empowers 100 veterans and their wards with income-generating skills. Participants receive a comprehensive startup kit upon graduation.

CHINESE EMBASSY PARTNERSHIP
The National Chairman secured support from the Chinese Embassy for veterans to participate in the Chinese Navy Hospital Ship medical outreach in Lagos, providing critical care for war-wounded, visually impaired, and hearing-impaired veterans.

WHEN SERVICE LEAVES A MARK, SUPPORT SHOULD REMAIN.

Today, Friday 21 August, we pause to reflect on the invisible and visible scars our veterans carry long after they leave active service.

SOME SACRIFICES ARE VISIBLE. OTHERS ARE CARRIED QUIETLY. The body remembers. Years of demanding physical service can take a toll, injuries, chronic pain, reduced mobility, and other health challenges may continue long after the uniform is hung.

SOME CHALLENGES AREN'T VISIBLE. Not every service-related challenge can be seen. Stress, difficult experiences, and the demands of military life can affect a person's emotional and psychological well-being. Sometimes, the strongest people need support too.

HEALTHCARE SHOULD CONTINUE. A veteran's healthcare needs don't automatically end after active service. Regular check-ups, early medical attention, rehabilitation, and access to appropriate care can help veterans maintain a better quality of life.

SUPPORT MAKES A DIFFERENCE. Good health is not only about treatment. It is also about having people who listen, care, and stand alongside veterans when challenges arise. Family. Community. Fellow veterans. Support organisations.

LET'S NOT WAIT UNTIL IT'S TOO LATE. Early attention to health concerns can make a difference. Veterans should feel encouraged to seek professional medical support when they experience persistent physical or emotional difficulties. Asking for help is not weakness.

THEIR HEALTH MATTERS. They served our nation. Now, their health, dignity, and well-being deserve our attention. Because caring for those who served is part of honouring their service.

APPEAL FOR PATIENCE AND REASSURANCE ON VETERANS’ WELFARE AND ENTITLEMENTS

Dear Comrades,

1. I write to you today, commending your matured and peaceful conduct and the decision to call off the public protest and I strongly appeal to all veterans to remain patient with the Federal Government. While the Nigerian Legion fully understands the economic challenges and anxiety surrounding your welfare, we must choose dialogue over disruption.

2. The Federal Government has given its firm assurance that all outstanding entitlements and the approved pension increases will be fully paid. The Federal Government holds our veterans in the highest esteem. The state treats our overall welfare as a matter of national priority.

3. You have sacrificed your youth for the peace of this nation, and that sacrifice is not forgotten. Please be assured that behind the scenes, even when others are sleeping, the Federal Government is actively working to resolve all administrative processes and ensure that every single entitlement due to our veterans is cleared.

4. In addition to financial entitlements, the government is prioritizing the health of our heroes. The Ministry of Defence and the Nigerian Legion are actively seeking strategic partnerships and international support to improve the health status of our war-wounded veterans significantly.

5. We are currently setting up specialized interventions to provide Prosthetic limbs for amputees, Hearing aids for auditory impairments, Corrective eye surgeries for visual ailments and Wheelchairs and mobility aids for the physically challenged.

6. Let us remain disciplined, orderly, and law-abiding, as our military training taught us. Do not allow our noble community to be used by elements looking to cause civil unrest. Change and relief are on the way.
