Welcome to a new Legislative Day in the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria!

Senate President Godswill Akpabio led the Principal Officers into the Chamber, took the official prayers and began the day's proceedings at 12:31am.

Votes and Proceedings of Thursday, 28th July, 2023 was approved.

MOTION
1. Urgent need to avert the impending strike of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) by Senator Suleiman Abdulrahman

Senate resolved to;
i. Mandate the Leadership of the Senate to interface between the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Federal Government in other to avert the intending strike of the NLC.

Confirmation of the following nominees for Appointment as Ministers of Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria;

Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele moved that the Senate do consider the request of Mr. President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, for the confirmation of the following nominees for Appointment as Ministers of Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, in accordance with Section 147 (2) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended):

Minority Leader, Senator Simon Davou Mwadkwon seconded.

Senate invoked Order 12(1) & 1 (a & b) to allow the Nominees of Mr. President C-in-C into the Chamber for confirmation as Ministers of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The Senate resolved into the Committee of the Whole for further legislative action.

The Senate suspended further screening at about 5:57 pm.

The Senate reverted to plenary to report progress.

The Senate in the Committee of the Whole considered the request of Mr. President on the screening of the Ministerial Nominees and deferred further screening to another Legislative day.

ADJOURNMENT
Senate adjourned Plenary to Tuesday, 1st August, 2023.

PRESS STATEMENT

Senate President Extols Senate Leader, Senator Bamidele at 60

The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio has described the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele as a great and patriotic Nigerian who has distinguished himself as a man of excellence in public service.

Senator Akpabio eulogized the Senate Leader, Senator Bamidele while proposing a toast at his 60th birthday celebration in Lagos on Sunday. He said it was an honour for him to be called upon to propose the toast for the Senate Leader.

According to Senator Akpabio, β€œIt is an honour for me as the President of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to stand in the presence of my Distinguished brothers and sisters and other eminent Nigerians to propose this toast in honour of a distinguished Nigerian and a man of excellence who has made great impact in his private and public life.”

Senator Akpabio prayed for peace of mind, good health and long life for the Ekiti born lawmaker and wished him well in his service to Nigeria in the years ahead.

On his part the Governor of Lagos, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu described Senator Bamidele as a worthy brother whom they have come a long way with.

He recalled that both himself and Senator Bamidele were sworn in as Special Advisers to the then Governor Bola Tinubu in 2003 and have remained together in the progressive movement since then. He praised Senator Bamidele for his consistency and loyalty over the years.

The birthday celebration which attracted the creme de la creme of the society including the Governors of Lagos State, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his Ekiti State counterpart Governor Abiodun Oyebanji as Chief Hosts, the Acting Governor of Ondo State, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the richest man in Africa, Alhaji Aliko Dangote and over 100 serving and past Senators among other personalities also featured a goodwill message by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The celebration featured solidarity messages by past officials of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) of which Senator Bamidele is a past President, the human rights community of which he is a founding member of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) and his classmates.

President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Tuesday, led members of the Senate to a book launch, to mark the 60th Birthday Anniversary of the Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, in Abuja.

He eulogized the sterling qualities of the Ekiti State Lawyer and Lawmaker, such as his unalloyed and untainted loyalty to his Mentor and Leader, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Akpabio charged upcoming politicians to emulate the Senate Leader, who was first and foremost, a loyal follower and disciple of the Tinubu school of politics, which has led to who he is today in Nigeria.

The President of the Senate also described him as an ally, a committed and loyal member of the APC and leadership of the Senate.

Today, we received in courtesy, the leadership of the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria led by the Etsu Nupe, His Royal Highness Yahaya Abubakar. The royal fathers said they were in the Senate to formally congratulate me on my emergence as the President of the10th Senate and to also place a request before the Senate on the need to recognise the roles of the traditional rulers in nation building through legislations.
