Today being #WorldPressFreedomDay (WPFD), we honour journalists all over the world who face great dangers and even death in practice of their profession.
The Netherlands and Unesco will host the World Press Freedom Conference 2020 (WPFC) in the Hague on October 18-20. It will be a joint celebration of World Press Freedom Day and the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists.
In these times of COVID-19 pandemic the world needs a free press more than ever.
We Support #PressFreedom, a cornerstone of human rights and protector of other freedoms. Attacks on freedom of expression must stop. Let's celebrate the value and necessity of independent reporting and thinking. Let's stand up for a free press worldwide.

CURIOUS TO SEE HOW ENTREPRENEURS ACROSS THE WORLD ARE CREATIVELY RESPONDING TO COVID-19? Orange Corners is launching the #counteringCOVID series, highlighting entrepreneurs that have adapted their business to keep it relevant and in service of their communities.
Our first hero is Riches Attai, CEO and Co-founder of agri-tech company Winich Farms from Lagos, Nigeria. Their digital platform connects over 7,000 local farmers to supermarkets in Nigeria. After the outbreak of Covid-19, the Winich team rapidly changed their business model to play a crucial part in helping out the community to create more #foodsecurity.

Minister Kaag: ‘Nu optreden om stille ramp in Afrika te voorkomen’

NL makes EUR 100 million available to combat COVID-19 in developing countries:

We need very significant means to fight the COVID-19 pandemic and its socio-economic consequences. To prevent and alleviate suffering in Africa and to assist other vulnerable countries and populations, including refugees. We support the UNSG’s call for international cooperation and solidarity. And center our national contribution around multilateral cooperation.

Therefore, the Netherlands will make EUR 100 million available to fight the COVID-19 pandemic in developing countries. This comes on top of the EUR 5 million that we made available to the World Health Organization and EUR 800,000 to the Red Cross (NRK) at the start of the crisis. The money is meant for:

* Prevention in the poorest countries, to prevent further spread of the virus. Think of clean drinking water, toilets, hygiene

* Humanitarian aid for those most affected. Psychosocial aid is an essential part of emergency aid. In doing so, we work together with the Red Cross

* Social and economic aid. We need to support not only the people but also the countries themselves. The healthcare system of poor countries will soon be facing an enormous task. And they also have acute financial difficulties there. Our contribution is focused on using existing financing facilities and multilateral coordination structures, which have proven to be effective.

Determined to do our utmost to help fight the pandemic, mitigate its consequences and work to strengthen preparedness, and recover better after the crisis.

Our Consulate in Lagos hosted a reception yesterday to mark the International Women's Day. The celebration witnessed a strong presence of notable women from various walks of life. Also, The Netherlands directly supports women’s rights organizations that stand up for equal rights, opportunities and freedom of choice for women and girls. This is done for instance through our SDG5 Fund, which includes Leading from the South and Power of Women, and is one of the world’s biggest funds for women’s rights and gender equality.
