Mokwa Flooding: Situation Report Updates As At 10 p.m., Saturday, May 31, 2025

The National Emergency Management Agency, together with other sister emergency response bodies, is intensifying efforts to rescue and save missing persons and provide relief to disaster victims and their families.

Our rapid response and recovery team conducted a symbolic distribution of the relief materials to affected persons and then handed over to the LGA, SEMA, and community leader (Sarkin Hausawa) to continue the distribution.

So far, 151 bodies have been recovered, 503 households and 264 houses have been affected, and 3,018 individuals displaced.

We are also closely monitoring the full recovery of all the initially admitted victims at various health centres that are now treated and discharged.

The two township roads and bridges that were damaged by the flooding have impacted vehicular movement and economic activities negatively.

Working together with the state government, we are rerouting traffic to alternative roads within the town.

We are providing potable water for domestic use of residents within the affected communities, including other hygiene measures, to prevent the outbreak of water-borne diseases associated with flooding disasters.

In line with the directive of President Bola Tinubu, all hands are on deck to ensure that every necessary support is provided to the town during this trying time while the situation is generally getting back to normal.

Today, I led a team from our headquarters to join other emergency responders at the ongoing search and rescue operations in Kpege area of Mokwa following the devastating flood that recently hit the community to oversee on-the-site assessment of the unfortunate disaster.

The epicentres of the disaster have been identified as Unguwan Hausawa and Tiffin Maza neighbourhoods in Mokwa Township.

While most of the rescued victims are currently receiving medical treatment at various healthcare centres in the town, others with mild pain received immediate first aid at the sites of rescue. Tragically, no fewer than 100 lives were claimed and bodies recovered.

NEMA also today delivered relief materials to the family of the disaster survivors through Comrade Yakubu Garba, the Deputy Governor of the State. These items include essential food and non-food supplies. Our water treatment equipment, earlier deployed, are also providing drinking water to affected communities.

While we spare no effort to save lives and provide urgent relief, we seek the support of the communities to adhere to the evacuation and hygiene directives of relevant authorities.

I commend the tireless efforts of the rescue teams, including personnel from Niger State Emergency Management Agency, Nigeria Red Cross Society, Military Disaster Response Units and local volunteers.

Earlier today, we restated our agency’s readiness to deepen engagement and forge partnership with all stakeholders within our national disaster management ecosystem during a visit of the Governing Council of the Chartered Risk Management Institute of Nigeria (CRMI), led by its President, Professor Ezekiel Oseni.

Both institutions share a common vision of entrenching and sustaining competency and effectiveness in the management of disasters in our country. We believe that cross-fertilizing ideas through knowledge and information sharing with CRMI and similar indigenous institutes will provide insights and birth strategies for the actualization of our overarching goal of building a resilient nation.

The Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mrs. Zubaida Umar was in attendance at the official induction ceremony of two newly acquired Agusta 109 Trekker helicopters into the operational fleet of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF).

The significant event, which took place at the Presidential Air Fleet Apron in Abuja, was presided over by the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency Senator Kashim Shettima.

The addition of these state-of-the-art helicopters is expected to bolster the capabilities of the Nigerian Air Force in areas such as aerial surveillance, rapid response, and emergency operations.

As the head of the nation’s disaster management agency, Mrs. Umar’s presence at the event underscores NEMA’s strategic interest in enhanced air mobility and inter-agency collaboration, particularly during disaster response and humanitarian missions.

The ceremony brought together top government officials, senior military officers, and key stakeholders in the nation’s security and emergency management architecture, highlighting the Federal Government’s continued investment in strengthening national defense and emergency preparedness.
