*NEMA AOO ASSESSES FLOOD IMPACT IN FCT COMMUNITIES*

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Abuja Operations Office (AOO), has carried out an on-the-spot assessment of flood-affected communities within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) following reports of flooding in some areas.

The assessment team visited Trademoore Estates, Guzape, and Galadimawa communities to evaluate the extent of the flooding, identify affected areas, and gather firsthand information to guide appropriate emergency response actions.

During the exercise, NEMA officials inspected affected locations, engaged with residents, and assessed the impact of the incident on homes, access roads, and other critical facilities. The findings from the assessment will support the agency’s coordination of interventions and collaboration with relevant stakeholders.

NEMA AOO urged residents, especially those living in flood-prone locations, to remain alert and comply with safety advisories as the agency continues to monitor the situation and strengthen disaster preparedness and response efforts across the FCT.

*NEMA AOO CONDUCTS JOINT POST DISASTER ASSESSMENT OF FIRE OUTBREAK AT EDA PLAZA, JABI, ABUJA*

Following the initial emergency response to the fire outbreak at Jabi Building Material Market, the National Emergency Management Agency Abuja Operations Office (NEMA AOO), in collaboration with the Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), today conducted a joint post disaster assessment of the incident scene at EDA Plaza.

The assessment team, comprising officials from NEMA AOO and FCT FEMA, arrived at the premises to undertake a post assessment evaluation of the extent of damage. The team met with the market management, led by the Chairman of the market, Chief Boniface Chukwuneka, who briefed officials on the scale of the fire damage and provided preliminary information on the number of shops affected.

Following the briefing, the joint assessment team proceeded to conduct a detailed on the ground impact assessment of the incident premises. The team officials documented and interacted directly with affected victims and shop owners whose businesses and livelihoods were destroyed by the inferno.

NEMA remains steadfast in its commitment to building resilient communities through coordinated stakeholder collaboration, timely assessment, and the delivery of targeted humanitarian assistance to those in need.

*NEMA Abuja Operations Office Hosts NYSC FCT on Advocacy Visit **

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Abuja Operations Office, on Thursday 27th August 2026, received the Director of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. Ateli Samson, and his team during an advocacy visit aimed at strengthening the existing partnership between both organisations and enhancing the role of corps members in disaster management.

The visit commenced with the arrival of the NYSC FCT delegation, followed by the National Anthem, introductions, and remarks on the purpose of the engagement.

Speaking during the visit, the Director NYSC FCT, Mr. Ateli Samson, highlighted the importance of renewing the existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between NYSC and NEMA on the NYSC Emergency Management Volunteers (EMV) initiative. He noted that the renewal would further strengthen the collaboration and provide a framework for improved coordination, training, and engagement of corps members in disaster management activities.

He emphasised that the NYSC EMV programme remains a strategic platform for mobilising young Nigerians to support disaster preparedness, risk reduction, public enlightenment, and community resilience efforts.

In his remarks, Pharmacist Zakari Abubakar highlighted the critical role of NYSC Emergency Management Volunteers as an integral part of NEMA’s disaster management structure. He explained that, through continuous training and effective coordination, corps members can contribute significantly to disaster awareness campaigns, early warning dissemination, emergency response support, and community mobilisation.

Pharmacist Zakari further stressed the importance of sustaining and strengthening the partnership between NEMA and NYSC to enhance youth participation in emergency management and build a more disaster-resilient society.

The engagement featured discussions on areas of collaboration, signing of the visitors’ book, presentation of souvenirs, and a group photograph to commemorate the visit.

The advocacy visit reaffirmed the commitment of NEMA and NYSC towards strengthening their longstanding partnership and leveraging the capacity of young Nigerians in advancing disaster risk reduction and emergency management across the country.

*NEMA AOO CONDUCTS ENUMERATION OF 2025 FLOOD-AFFECTED PERSONS IN FCT AND KOGI STATE*

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Abuja Operations Office (AOO), in collaboration with relevant State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMAs), security agencies, local authorities, and other stakeholders, has continued with the enumeration exercise of persons and households affected by the 2025 flood disaster across selected areas in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Kogi State.

The exercise, coordinated by the Abuja Operations Office, is being carried out through designated teams deployed to various communities and Local Government Areas (LGAs) within the affected locations. The teams are responsible for identifying affected households, capturing relevant information, and documenting vulnerable persons to ensure the availability of accurate and verifiable data.

In Kogi State, the enumeration teams visited selected LGAs where affected persons and households were assessed, while in the FCT, teams commenced similar activities across designated communities impacted by the 2025 flood disaster.

The exercise is aimed at generating credible data to support the identification of genuine beneficiaries for the Federal Government’s flood relief intervention through NEMA. It also provides a platform for proper assessment of the extent of impact on affected communities, including vulnerable groups such as women, children, elderly persons, and persons living with disabilities.

The enumeration is ongoing across the remaining designated areas in FCT and Kogi State.

*KUBWA BAY RESPONDS TO MOTOR VEHICLE CRASH*

On Monday, 17 August 2026, the NEMA Kubwa Bay Emergency Response Team responded to a motor vehicle crash at approximately 11:30 AM at a location directly opposite the Catholic Church in Kubwa Federal Housing Estate, Abuja.

The incident involved a Honda Accord with vehicle registration number KWM-383AA/ABC, which reportedly lost control and was involved in the crash. One person was affected in the incident, with no fatality recorded.

The NEMA response team promptly evacuated the victim from the scene to General Hospital, Kubwa, where the victim was handed over to family members for further medical attention and necessary care.

No other stakeholder or responding agency was involved in the operation.

Following the successful evacuation and handover of the victim, the NEMA emergency response team returned to its Emergency Response and Ambulance Bay (ERAB) at exactly 12:37 PM.

The incident response was successfully concluded, with one casualty evacuated and zero deaths recorded.

*Head NEMA AOO Appears on ADBN TV Discusses Flood Response in FCT*

The Head of Operations, NEMA Abuja Operations Office, Pharm. Zakari Abubakar, appeared on ADBN TV Abuja, DStv Channel 258, to discuss flood preparedness and response in the Federal Capital Territory.

During the programme, he highlighted NEMA’s proactive measures on flood preparedness, early warning dissemination, emergency response and coordination with relevant stakeholders to protect lives and property.

Pharm. Abubakar urged residents to take flood alerts seriously, keep drainage channels clear, avoid flood-prone areas and promptly report emergencies to relevant authorities.

He also emphasized the importance of collaboration among government agencies, communities, the media and other stakeholders in reducing disaster risks across the FCT.

The appearance provided an opportunity for NEMA AOO to engage the public and reinforce key flood-safety messages through ADBN TV’s platform, which focuses on current affairs, regional news, national issues, lifestyle and sports.

The engagement forms part of NEMA AOO’s ongoing public sensitisation and media outreach on disaster preparedness and risk reduction.

*NEMA AOO and FCT FEMA Conduct Joint Assessment of Flash Flood-Affected Communities in FCT*

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Abuja Operations Office (AOO), in collaboration with the FCT Emergency Management Agency (FCT FEMA), has commenced an assessment of communities affected by recent flash floods in the Federal Capital Territory.

Emergency response teams from both agencies visited Wuse, Mabushi and other affected communities to assess the extent of the flooding, identify immediate humanitarian needs and evaluate the impact on homes, roads, businesses and other critical infrastructure.

The joint assessment is aimed at obtaining accurate field information to guide coordinated emergency response, support affected residents and strengthen preparedness measures against further flooding as the rainy season continues.

The teams also engaged with residents and community stakeholders, documenting reported impacts and identifying areas requiring urgent intervention.

NEMA AOO and FCT FEMA reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening inter-agency coordination and ensuring timely response to flood incidents across the FCT, while urging residents in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant, avoid flooded roads and waterways, and adhere to safety advisories from relevant authorities.
