The Ondo State Government has announced that the August 2026 edition of the monthly environmental sanitation exercise will hold statewide on Saturday, 29th August, 2026.

Members of the public are hereby notified that movement of persons and vehicles will be restricted between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. during the exercise.

Residents are encouraged to take advantage of this period to clean their surroundings, including clearing drainage channels, desilting gutters, removing refuse and debris and trimming overgrown weeds.

The Government reiterates its steadfast commitment to ensuring a clean, safe and disease-free environment for all citizens and calls for the full cooperation and active participation of residents in the monthly sanitation programme.

UNIDO, Ondo Team Up on Green Economy, Net-Zero Drive

The Ondo State Government is set to collaborate with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) on efforts to advance Nigeria’s green and just transition to net zero through sustainable circular economy practices.

The collaboration will be strengthened through a five-day training workshop scheduled to hold in Ondo State from August 24 to 28, 2026.

The programme will focus on building institutional capacity and developing effective policy frameworks for the sustainable management of off-grid waste, particularly discarded solar panels, cables, used batteries and other electronic waste.

The Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Tob Loko, is expected to host the UNIDO team, alongside policymakers and technical experts from relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies.

The initiative is aimed at strengthening environmental governance in the state while promoting responsible waste management and the adoption of circular economy principles.

The state government said the choice of Ondo as host for the programme underscored the investment-friendly environment created by the policies of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s administration.

It added that the collaboration would provide opportunities to attract green investments, promote sustainable industrial practices and further position Ondo State as a destination for environmentally responsible development.

The partnership is also expected to contribute to Nigeria’s broader efforts towards achieving a green and just transition to net zero emissions, while creating a framework for the sustainable management and recycling of emerging forms of renewable energy waste.

PRESS STATEMENT

ONDO STATE GOVERNMENT PROVIDES UPDATE ON OFFENSIVE ODOUR

The Ondo State Government has provided an update on the ongoing investigation into the offensive odour being perceived in some parts of Akure metropolis.

Following the directive of the Honourable Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Tob Loko, a team of Professionals was constituted by the Ministry, to work with some Environmental Consultants, to investigate the possible source and nature of the odour.

Preliminary findings from the investigation indicate that the Ala river course is not the source of the offensive odour as earlier speculated. Rather, the findings suggest that the odour is purely a case of air pollution arising from the release of certain organic compounds into the atmosphere.

While efforts are ongoing to conclusively identify the specific organic compound(s), its/their characteristics and the source, the state government has recommended some precautionary measures for residents of the affected areas: Residents are advised to limit their exposure to the odour and make use of nose masks in the affected areas.

The government, therefore, urges residents in the state to remain calm and continue with their normal daily activities. They are also encouraged to promptly report any suspicious activities; illegal waste disposal, unusual emissions or other environmental violations to the Ondo State Ministry of Environment for appropriate action.

ONDO STATE GOVERNMENT INTENSIFIES FLOOD ASSESSMENT ACROSS AFFECTED COMMUNITIES

The Ondo State Government has intensified its assessment of flood-affected communities across Ondo West, Odigbo, Okitipupa, Ilaje, Ese-Odo and Irele Local Government Areas, following the directive of the Governor, His Excellency, Dr. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa.

The Honourable Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Tob Loko, led the assessment tour across the affected communities to evaluate the extent of flooding, identify critical intervention points, and determine both the immediate and underlying causes of the situation.

In Ondo West, the Commissioner was joined by the Chairman of the Local Government, Hon. Ayotunde Akinfolarin, and received by the Director of Environment, Mrs. Akinsanmi Stella, alongside other officials. The inspection covered Itanla Junction, Kopek Junction, Akure Motor Park, Exporter Hotel on Valentino Road, Fagun and Lipakala Junction near Adeyemi Federal University of Education.

In Odigbo, the team which was accompanied by the Local Government Chairman, Hon. Taiwo Adegoroye, inspected the damaged bridge linking Gadanla and Akinlola Akinfolarin communities, Consider Hotel Road leading to Zachaeus Zone 1, and the Ajegunle–Oshinmakinwa corridor extending to Rainbow and Power Line areas in Ore.

In Okitipupa, the Chairman, Hon Andrew Ogunsakin, joined the assessment. The team inspected the Aja Akinneyin/Ijokodo Community, beside Holy Trinity Secondary School, Ikoya, where more than 30 residential buildings have reportedly been submerged by floodwaters.

In Ilaje, the Commissioner was accompanied by the Secretary to the Local Government, Hon. Segun Odolo, Navy Commander Makinde, and the Special Assistant to the Governor on Technical and Ecological Control, Hon. Engr. Elisha Ebijimi.

The team inspected the Naval Base, Igbokoda, Officers' Mess, Secretariat Road and the Ilaje Local Government Secretariat, where floodwaters have inundated the complex. The assessment also extended to some riverine communities, while Secretariat Road was found to be completely impassable due to flooding.

The assessment further covered affected communities and vulnerable locations in Ese-Odo and Irele Local Government Areas, as part of the State Government’s broader effort to obtain a comprehensive assessment of the flooding situation across the state.

Dr. Loko reaffirmed the State Government’s commitment to implementing immediate and long-term flood-mitigation measures to protect lives, property and critical infrastructure. He urged residents to complement government efforts by keeping drainage channels free of refuse, avoiding indiscriminate waste disposal, and ensuring that natural waterways are not obstructed.

The Commissioner stressed that sustained government intervention, alongside responsible community participation, remains essential to achieving lasting solutions to flooding across Ondo State.

DR TOB LOKO LEADS FLOOD RESPONSE EFFORT IN AROGBO COMMUNITY

Hon. Dr. Tob Loko, the Ondo State Commissioner for Environment, has spearheaded a community-based environmental response to ease flooding and improve water drainage in parts of Arogbo Community.

The intervention followed sustained rainfall that caused flooding and water accumulation across sections of Arogbo Island, particularly in Agwobiri, Erubiri, and Egbesuburi Quarters.

Through the mobilisation of youths, community volunteers, and residents, blocked drainage channels, canals, and waterways were cleared to restore the free flow of water and reduce the immediate impact of the flooding.

Residents commended Dr. Loko for the timely intervention and applauded the Ondo State Government, under the leadership of Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, for its commitment to a cleaner, safer, healthier, and more environmentally sustainable Ondo State.

The intervention further underscores the importance of responsive leadership, community participation, proper waste disposal, and sustained environmental action in reducing flood risks and strengthening resilience across vulnerable communities.

ONDO STATE GOVERNMENT REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO ADDRESS FLOODING

The Ondo State Government has noted with deep concern the flooding affecting some communities across the State and extends its heartfelt sympathies to the residents, families, and communities impacted by the situation. The Government recognises the challenges and losses associated with the flooding and remains committed to providing timely and sustainable interventions.

While several flood-prone areas had earlier been identified and mapped for intervention, new reports, videos, and photographic evidence have revealed additional locations requiring urgent assessment and attention.

Although it may not be possible to reach all affected areas at the same time, the State Government remains committed to addressing the challenge through coordinated, strategic, and sustained efforts.

Currently, amphibious excavators are being deployed through the Office of the Special Assistant to Mr Governor on Technical and Ecological Control, Hon. Engr. Elisha Ebijimi, to strategic locations for emergency clearing and channelization activities. Drainage construction and rehabilitation projects are also ongoing, while identified erosion-prone areas are receiving appropriate attention. Additional locations are also being assessed, and necessary flood-control and environmental mitigation measures will be implemented.

Through the Ministry of Environment the State Government has perfected plans to intensify public sensitisation, stakeholder engagement, environmental monitoring, proper waste disposal and enforcement. Collaboration with Local Government Areas will as well be strengthened to ensure effective environmental interventions at the grassroots.

Nonetheless, residents are urged to avoid indiscriminate dumping of refuse, blockage of drainage channels, and other practices that may worsen flooding. Environmental offenders will continue to be prosecuted in accordance with relevant laws.

The Government also appeals to residents and communities to promptly report flooding, blocked drainage channels, erosion threats, and other environmental concerns to the Ministry of Environment and relevant government agencies. Communities and stakeholders are encouraged to cooperate with Government in supporting and implementing measures aimed at addressing this menace.

The Ondo State Government remains committed to protecting lives and property and building a cleaner, safer, and more environmentally resilient Ondo State.

ILLEGAL DISCHARGE OF EFFLUENT INTO IJAPO ESTATE–EL-SHADDAI–ALAGBAKA EXTENSION STREAM: ONDO STATE GOVERNMENT ISSUES FINAL WARNING TO CULPRITS

The Ondo State Ministry of Environment has received reports of an offensive sulphuric acid odour in the air, particularly at night, in parts of Akure metropolis.

Preliminary investigations by the Ministry indicate that the offensive odour is linked to the illegal discharge of untreated effluent and other hazardous waste into a stream flowing from Ijapo Estate through Edo Lodge and Fiwasaye to the area behind El-Shaddai Residential Estate, Alagbaka, Akure.

This unlawful act has resulted in severe environmental pollution and poses a serious threat to public health, environmental sustainability, and the well-being of residents. It is also a clear violation of the environmental sanitation and pollution control laws of Ondo State.

In response, the Honourable Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Tob Loko, has constituted a high-powered investigative team to identify the exact source of the illegal effluent discharge. The team has been mandated to conduct a thorough investigation, gather credible evidence, and ensure that all those found culpable are brought to justice.

The Government reiterates its unwavering commitment to protecting the environment and safeguarding the health of residents. Environmental pollution in any form is a grave offence against the people and will not be tolerated under any circumstances.

While efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible, members of the public are urged to remain calm and vigilant. ONDO STATE GOVERNMENT REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO A CLEAN AND HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT

Yesterday, I led a team of officers from the Ondo State Ministry of Environment and the Ondo State Waste Management Authority (ODSWMA) on a compliance monitoring and enforcement drive during the May edition of the Monthly Environmental Sanitation Exercise in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

The exercise, held between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m., is part of the Ondo State Government's ongoing commitment to environmental cleanliness, public health protection, and sustainable waste management.

Prior to the exercise, residents were duly notified and encouraged to remain indoors while cleaning their homes, business premises, drainage channels, and immediate surroundings.

The enforcement team monitored compliance across major roads and communities within the Akure metropolis, including Oba Adesida Road and adjoining areas. The exercise recorded a high level of compliance, evidenced by significant reduction in human and vehicular movement throughout the sanitation period. This reflects increasing public awareness of the critical role environmental sanitation plays in disease prevention and environmental sustainability.

Notwithstanding the overall compliance recorded, a few individuals were found violating the sanitation order by moving about without valid authorization. In line with extant environmental sanitation regulations, the offenders were apprehended and arraigned before the Mobile Court, reaffirming the government' s commitment to enforcing environmental laws without exception.

The Ondo State Government, under the leadership of His Excellency, Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, remains resolute in its pursuit of a cleaner, safer, and healthier environment for all residents.

We, therefore, urge the public to sustain their support for environmental sanitation initiatives and continue to adopt responsible environmental practices toward building a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable Ondo State.
