Delegates from WaterAid Nigeria paid an advocacy visit to the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education on the sustainability of completed WASH facilities in public primary and secondary schools.

The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss practical strategies for ensuring the long-term functionality and management of the facilities.

Key areas highlighted included: routine maintenance, hygiene promotion, and institutional mechanisms to preserve the benefits of these investments for learners across Lagos State.

LASG MONITORS 2026/2027 PLACEMENT TEST ACROSS PUBLIC AND PRIVATE PRIMARY SCHOOLS
…Commissioner Assures Transparent, Merit-Based Placement into JSS 1

The Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, on Tuesday monitored the conduct of the 2026/ 2027 Placement Test for Primary Six pupils transitioning into public Junior Secondary Schools across the State.

The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, led the monitoring team to Local Government Primary School, Ikeja GRA at 10:30 a.m. to assess compliance with examination guidelines and to interact with pupils, invigilators, and school officials.

alli-Balogun reaffirmed the State Government’s commitment to a transparent, merit-based placement system for admission into Lagos State Model Colleges and Upgraded Secondary Schools.

FORUM OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT SUPERVISORS AND SPECIAL ADVISERS FOR EDUCATION IN LAGOS STATE PAYS COURTESY VISIT TO COMMISSIONER, MB &SE
The forum of Local Government supervisors and special advisers for Education in Lagos State has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the quality of education across the State through collaboration and continuous engagement with the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education.
It stated this recently at the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education complex, Alausa, Ikeja during its courtesy visit led by the Special Adviser for Education in Ikosi/ Isheri LCDA Mrs. Taiwo Ololade to the Honourable Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Tolani Alli- Balogun.
The visit was aimed at learning from the Commissioner's wealth of experience and receiving guidance on strategies to further improve the delivery of basic and secondary education in Lagos State.
During the interactive session, members of the Forum highlighted several key concerns requiring the Ministry's attention. These included the need for regular capacity-building programmes for Education Supervisors, teachers, and school administrators through both local and international training opportunities; improved security across all public schools; the construction of perimeter fencing to enhance the safety of school environments; continuous professional development for teachers; special incentives and support for teachers and principals serving in riverine communities; and the facilitation of strategic partnerships with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to complement government efforts aimed at improving educational outcomes.
In his response, the Honourable Commissioner commended the Forum for its dedication to advancing education at the grassroots level. He emphasized that while the government remains committed to providing quality education, sustainable development requires collective responsibility and active participation from all stakeholders.
The Commissioner encouraged members of the Forum to cultivate a culture of giving back to their communities by regularly visiting schools within their respective LGAs and LCDAs, engaging with school administrators, monitoring learning environments, identifying challenges requiring intervention and always ask questions. He further advised them to maintain open communication with the Ministry and never hesitate to seek clarification or guidance whenever the need arises.
He stressed that government cannot single-handedly address every challenge facing the education sector and called on education stakeholders to foster stronger collaboration with communities, development partners, and private organizations in support of educational development.
The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment by the Forum to work closely with the Ministry in promoting excellence, innovation, and inclusive quality education across Lagos State.

Speaking during the exercise, the Honourable Commissioner reaffirmed the State Government’s commitment to a transparent, merit-based placement system for admission into Lagos State Model Colleges and Upgraded Secondary Schools.

Speaking on the significance of the examination, the Commissioner noted that the Placement Examination is a critical tool for assessing pupils’ readiness for secondary school and for ensuring equitable distribution of students across the State’s public secondary schools.

He added that the process upholds standards, promotes healthy competition, and guarantees that placement into Model Colleges and Upgraded Schools is based strictly on merit and performance, thereby strengthening the quality of basic education in Lagos State.

The Commissioner further emphasized that the essence of education goes beyond academics. “Education is about nurturing children for the future roadmap ahead of them. It is about character training, academic excellence, and moral upbringing,” he stated

In the same vein, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Mrs. Abisola Dokunmu-Adegbite, monitored the exercise at Ojodu Primary School Complex, Ojodu, and Inner-city Mission Children School, Oregun, representing a public and private school respectively.

She commended the orderly conduct of the examination and the cooperation of school administrators and staff.

In addition, Directors and other senior officials of the Ministry were deployed to monitor the exercise across designated centres in the 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas of the State to ensure full adherence to standards and guidelines.

LAGOS STATE RECEIVES DIGITAL BOOST AS BESDA DISTRIBUTES TABLETS TO JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS
The Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, has taken another significant step towards strengthening technology-driven education with the presentation of tablet devices to junior secondary schools on Friday, 24th July, 2026, in the Conference Room of the Ministry, Alausa-Ikeja, under the Better Education Service Delivery for All (BESDA) Programme.
The BESDA Programme is a collaborative initiative between the World Bank and the Federal Ministry of Education through the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC). The programme is designed to enhance education management and promote evidence-based decision-making in the delivery of quality education across participating states.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, the Director, Project, Planning and Research Department, Mr. Opeyemi Martins announced that all junior schools will receive 30 GB of data every month from Airtel as part of the project's support initiative. He stated that this provision is intended to enhance internet access and support effective teaching and learning in the schools.
The Director of Basic Education Services, Mrs. Toyin Oyedele reiterated that the tablets are not the personal property of any teacher or principal. "You must take good care of them and guard them diligently. Whenever you are transferred or posted out of your station, ensure that you leave the tablet behind for your successor."
Other stakeholders described the initiative as a major milestone in the digital transformation of the education sector. The deployment of the tablets will support effective data collection, monitoring, reporting, and informed planning, ultimately improving learning outcomes and the management of basic and secondary education.
In the first phase of the rollout, 160 tablet devices were distributed to designated junior secondary schools across Lagos State. The initiative will eventually extend to all junior secondary schools in Lagos State, ensuring that schools have access to digital tools that support efficient administration and evidence-based educational planning.
The tablet distribution underscores the commitment of the Lagos State Government, in partnership with the World Bank, the Federal Ministry of Education, and UBEC, to leveraging technology in strengthening the education system. It also aligns with ongoing efforts to improve accountability, enhance data-driven policy formulation, and ensure that every learner benefits from a more responsive and efficient education system.
As implementation progresses, the BESDA Programme is expected to significantly improve education management processes while equipping schools with the digital resources needed to support sustainable improvements in educational service delivery across Lagos State.

ANNOUNCEMENT! ANNOUNCEMENT!!

This is an important announcement from the Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education.
The Ministry hereby informs the general public, and especially candidates who sat for the Screening Test into Lagos State Model Colleges and Upgraded Secondary Schools in May 2026, that the admission status for the Merit List has been released.

Successful candidates are advised to visit the Lagos State Examinations Board portal from Tuesday, 22nd July 2026, to check their admission status.

Successful candidates should then proceed to their respective schools from Monday, 31st August 2026, to collect their admission letters and complete the registration process.

The Ministry congratulates all successful candidates and wishes them a rewarding and successful academic journey.

Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education Holds Strategic Communication Conference for Public Affairs Officers in the education Sector

The Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, in collaboration with Global Education Media Ltd., a development partner in the education sector, successfully hosted a one-day conference for Public Affairs Officers (PAOs) across the education sector on Thursday, 25 June 2026 at NECA House, CBD, Ikeja.
The conference, themed "Strategic Communication: Advancing the Lagos Education Agenda through Effective Public Affairs Engagement," underscored the critical role of strategic communication in promoting government policies, programmes, and achievements within the education sector.
The conference brought together key stakeholders and communication professionals to deliberate on innovative strategies for strengthening public engagement and enhancing the visibility of educational reforms and initiatives in Lagos State.
