Oborevwori Inaugurates Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Mgt Faculties At UNIDEL Owa-Alero

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, on Friday inaugurated critical academic infrastructure at the University of Delta (UNIDEL), Owa-Alero Campus, in Ika North-East Local Government Area, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to expanding access to quality education across the state.

The projects commissioned include the Faculty of Management and Social Sciences Complex, named after the Governor; the Faculty of Environmental Sciences building; the Faculty of Engineering Lecture Hall and Workshops; a 500-seater central auditorium; and a fully equipped central library.

Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Oborevwori described the event as a “harvest of projects” and a clear demonstration of his administration’s resolve to provide world-class learning facilities in Delta State institutions.

He noted that although his administration has been widely recognized for visible infrastructure such as flyovers, bridges and roads, significant investments have also been made in education and health sectors.

“Education remains the most powerful tool for transformation. When we invest in infrastructure, we invest in people. These facilities are designed to meet global standards and to foster innovation, research, entrepreneurship and practical skills development,” the governor said.

Oborevwori urged students of the institution to make optimal use of the facilities and guard against vandalism, emphasizing that discipline, creativity and integrity must guide their academic pursuits.

He said: “These facilities are for you. Protect them and use them responsibly. Our goal is to prepare you not just to seek jobs but to create them in a rapidly evolving, knowledge-driven world".

The governor recalled his involvement in the establishment of the University of Delta and two other state universities during his tenure as Speaker of the State House of Assembly.

He said the decision to create additional universities was informed by the limited admission quota approved by the National Universities Commission (NUC) for the then Delta State University, Abraka, which left thousands of qualified students without placement annually.

“At a time, over 25,000 students were qualified for university admission, but only about 5,000 slots were approved. We had to act. Today, we can see that the vision is worthwhile,” he stated.

He commended the immediate past administration for initiating the university and appreciated the NUC and key officials who facilitated the approval process for the three universities established on the same day, describing it as a rare feat.

Governor Oborevwori also expressed gratitude to the university management for naming the Faculty of Management and Social Sciences Complex after him, describing the gesture as humbling and reassuring.

Former Governor of Delta State, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, in his remarks, lauded Oborevwori’s leadership and continuity in strengthening the state’s higher education system.

He noted that the governor was part of the legislative process that birthed the three universities and has continued to consolidate on that foundation.

“Today, UNIDEL alone has about 15,000 students. Imagine if these young people were out on the streets without access to higher education. The peace we enjoy today is partly because we created opportunities for our youths,” Okowa said.

Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof. Nyerhovwo Tonukari, said that the Sheriff Oborevwori Complex, which is housing the Faculty of Management and Social Sciences, includes a 250-seater auditorium, lecture rooms, offices, a student resource centre and media facilities, was completed in 2025.

He disclosed that the Faculty of Environmental Sciences building, awarded in August 2021 and completed under the present administration, consists of two 250-seater auditoriums, four 80-capacity classrooms, studios, staff offices, a faculty library and a 150-capacity seminar room.

According to him, the engineering complex comprises fully equipped workshops for metalwork, carpentry, mechanics, foundry and welding, as well as a 200-capacity engineering studio. The central library seats 426 students, while the main auditorium accommodates 500.

Vice-Chancellor of the University of Delta, Prof. Stella Chiemeke, described the projects as a testament to the governor’s transformational agenda and people-focused leadership.

She said the engineering complex, environmental sciences faculty and management sciences building would significantly expand the university’s capacity to train professionals in key sectors critical to the state’s socio-economic development.

“Your support has translated into more classrooms, more laboratories, more workshops and more opportunities for our youths. You are not just constructing buildings; you are constructing the future of Delta State,” she said.

Chiemeke disclosed the university’s decision to name the Management and Social Sciences Complex after Governor Oborevwori in recognition of his contributions to the institution and the advancement of education in the state.

Chairman of Ika North-East Local Government Council, Hon. Monday Odigwe, also commended the governor for his commitment to balanced development, noting that the projects reflect the practical implementation of the MORE Agenda across all parts of Delta State.

The Governor of Delta State, Rt Hon Elder Sheriff Oborevwori has approved a minor cabinet reshuffle as follows;

1. Engr.Michael Ifeanyi Anoka from Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Renewal to Ministry of Energy.

2. Hon.Sunday Tataobuzogwu from Ministry of Energy to Ministry Physical Planning and Urban Renewal

3. Mrs. Rose Ezewu from Ministry of Secondary Education to Ministry of Primary Education, and

4. Dr.Kingsley Ashibuogwu from Ministry of Primary Education to Ministry of Secondary Education.

According to a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government(SSG) Dr.Kingsley Eze Emu, the redeployment of the Commissioners is with immediate effect.

In another development, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has approved the nomination of the following persons into the Governing Council of the Delta State University,Abraka,namely:

1. Rt. Hon Festus Ovie Agas

2. Rt. Hon Frank Enekorogha

3. Charles Ajuyah (SAN)

Oborevwori Mourns Senator Peter Nwaoboshi

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former Senator representing Delta North Senatorial District, Senator Peter Onyelukachukwu Nwaoboshi, describing his death as a great loss to Delta State, the Anioma nation and Nigeria at large.

Governor Oborevwori in a condolence message issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, said Senator Nwaoboshi was a proud son of Delta State and a courageous defender of the Anioma cause whose contributions to nation-building would remain indelible.

The Governor recalled the late senator’s impactful service at the National Assembly, where he chaired the Senate Committee on Niger Delta Affairs, noting that his voice and advocacy for the development of the Niger Delta and Delta State stood him out as a committed and passionate leader.

He said Senator Nwaoboshi’s political journey and rise to prominence were anchored on a rich political pedigree, selfless service and unwavering commitment to the ideals of democracy, which also saw him serve meritoriously as a two-time Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta State.

According to the governor, the late lawmaker devoted his life to the service of his people, the party and the nation, leaving behind a legacy of courage, loyalty and dedication to public service.

Governor Oborevwori, said: “On behalf of the government and people of Delta State, I mourn the passing of my dear friend, Senator Peter Onyelukachukwu Nwaoboshi.

Oborevwori Approves Automatic Scholarships for Best Graduating Students in Delta State-Owned Universities

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has approved automatic scholarship awards for the best graduating students across the four state-owned universities, in a move aimed at strengthening academic excellence and supporting youth development.

The announcement was made by the Delta State Bursary and Scholarship Board, whose Executive Secretary, Dr. Godfrey Enita, said the gesture reflects the Governor’s unwavering commitment to empowering young people through the M.O.R.E. Agenda, particularly in the area of human capital development.

According to the Board, the automatic scholarship scheme will benefit the Best Graduating Student from each academic session in the following state-owned institutions: Delta State University, Abraka; Southern Delta University, Ozoro; University of Delta, Agbor and Dennis Osadebay University, Asaba.

Dr. Enita explained that each awardee will receive full funding to pursue Master’s and Ph.D. programmes in recognized Nigerian universities.

He noted that beneficiaries will be required to complete the standard scholarship procedures and documentation to access the awards.

He added that the initiative underscores the state government’s determination to raise a highly skilled, globally competitive youth population capable of contributing to Delta State’s long-term growth.

Oborevwori Performs Groundbreaking For Reconstruction Of Warri–Sapele–Benin Road
..Says Project Symbolises Renewed Hope Partnership

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, on Tuesday, performed the groundbreaking for the reconstruction of the Warri–Sapele–Benin Dual Carriageway in Uvwie and Okpe Local Government Areas, declaring the project a symbol of renewed collaboration between the Federal and State Governments for the benefit of Nigerians.

Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Oborevwori said the project represented “another major step forward in the infrastructure renewal drive of the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Federal Government, in collaboration with the Delta State Government.”

He described the Warri–Sapele–Benin Road as a critical national infrastructure connecting major cities across the South-South and providing access to Edo and other parts of the federation.

“The section we are flagging off "covers a dual carriageway with reinforced concrete pavement, expanded shoulders, and extensive stormwater drainage systems, all designed to provide durability and ensure the safety of road users.”

Governor Oborevwori noted that the initiative underscored the gains of synergy between the two tiers of government, emphasizing that development becomes faster when governments work together in the interest of the people.

“Although this road is a federal route, the users are Deltans and Nigerians, and their safety and comfort are what matter most to us,” he said.

The governor further disclosed that the Delta State Government had paid ₦10 billion in compensation to facilitate the ongoing construction of the Second Niger Bridge access road project, aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving connectivity between Asaba, Onitsha, and adjoining communities.

He lamented the hardship long suffered by commuters and transporters on the Warri–Sapele–Benin route due to its deplorable condition, noting that the reconstruction would enhance mobility, reduce travel time, and spur economic growth.

He said: “Beyond these economic benefits, the project will also strengthen security. Criminals often exploit bad roads to commit crimes. Once completed, this highway will make movement safer and improve the response of security agencies.”

The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to making Delta one of the safest states in Nigeria through strategic investments in infrastructure, peace, and security.

He also promised that the requests of the people of Uvwie Kingdom partaining the Mother and Child Hospital and provision of 500KVA transformer, would be looked into.

“At over sixty years of age, I am not here for personal gain but to leave lasting legacies that generations will remember me for. By the time I leave office, I want Deltans to proudly say, ‘Oborevwori did this, Oborevwori did that,’” he said before officially flagging off the project from Effurun Roundabout by spare parts market to after Ohore, before Ometan Bridge.

Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Comrade Reuben Izeze, said the project is the brainchild of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori whom he described as a visionary leader determined to transform Delta’s infrastructure landscape.

“This 10km project stretches five kilometres on each side and features an 8.8-metre-wide carriageway on both lanes, far beyond the standard 7.3 metres,” Izeze said, praising the governor’s foresight and commitment.

He said the project would be completed within 12 months, adding that the state would celebrate another landmark achievement that would enhance trade, transportation, and community life.

General Manager of China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), Engr. Thomas Feng, thanked Governor Oborevwori for the confidence reposed in the firm, promising to deliver the project in record time and to the highest standards.

“Today’s ceremony marks the beginning of a renewed era of infrastructure that will promote safer travel, stronger connectivity, and lasting economic growth for the people of Delta State,” Feng said.

Earlier, Chairman of Uvwie Local Government Council, Chief Anthony Ofoni, flanked by his Okpe Local Government Council counterpart, commended the governor for his people-centred leadership and announced that the Airport Road in Effurun would be named as "Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori Way” in recognition of his vision and enduring legacy.

Also speaking, HRM Emmanuel Sideso, Abe I, the Ovie of Uvwie Kingdom and Chairman of the Urhobo Council of Traditional Rulers, lauded the governor’s administration for prioritizing key infrastructure projects in Uvwie and across the state.

He noted that ongoing works such as the three flyovers and road expansions in Effurun and Warri had transformed the urban landscape and accelerated economic activities.

Representative of the Orodje of Okpe Kingdom, Okakuro Mike Afe, joined in commending the governor for his developmental strides, praying for his successful completion of an eight-year tenure to consolidate the gains of the MORE Agenda.

The event attracted top government officials, traditional rulers, community leaders, and captains of industries, all of whom hailed the project as a beacon of renewed hope for the people of Delta and beyond.

DELTA STATE: Transitioning into online journalism

ABSTRACT

This chapter explores Delta State's transition into online journalism, highlighting the state's proactive approach to leveraging digital media.
The author discusses how The Pointer, a state-owned newspaper, has successfully adapted to online journalism, expanding its reach and audience. The chapter also examines the role of the Executive Assistant to the Delta State Governor on New Media, Felix Ofou, in promoting online journalism and digital literacy, and how the state government utilises online platforms to disseminate information, promote economic growth, and enhance governance.

The chapter showcases Delta State's innovative approaches to online media and its potential for replication in other states.

Delta State was created on August 27, 1991, after the old Bendel State was split into two - Delta and Edo - by the then military ruler, General Ibrahim Babangida. In those days, Bendel State had a newspaper, The Nigerian Observer. It was the newspaper of first choice among Bendelites, served daily with a rich mix of politics, economy, entertainment, and sports. The Nigerian Observer;, over the years, produced a haron ordournalists of Bendel State origin. So, when Delta was excised from Bendel, some of the journalists who plied their trade at The Nigerian Observer but hailed from Delta State returned home.
They provided the experience and expertise for the establishment of a Delta State-owned newspaper. That was how The Pointer was birthed in 1994, three years after the creation of the state.

And for over three decades since 1994, The Pointer has trudged on, marching through the blades of time; through the storms of military jackboot, overawing the treacherous turbulence of bureaucracy, especially under democratic governments. The Pointer remains one of the longest-surviving state-owned newspapers. Some other state-owned newspapers have not been lucky. They have long been consigned to the compost heap of history in Nigeria's print media industry, famed for its high mortality rate. Many good and well-packaged newspapers have graced the media stage. Some are brilliant in form and content, some dour and unappealing, and some combative and adventurous. Yet, they all died, both the good and the ugly. But The Pointer lives.

With the dawning of online journalism (digital journalism) in Nigeria, The Pointer has moved swiftly into the online space (https://www.thepointersnewsonline.com/) while still publishing its trademark hard copy. This is in keeping with the exigency of modernity, Just so it does not go into irrelevance. Every newspaper in the world worth Its name has gone hybrid, publishing both the printed matter and online edition. Delta State government, owners of The Pointer; has realised that transitioning into online journalism has given the newspaper a booster Shot to reach a wider audience, including marketing the state to the global community of investors, tourists, and venture capitalists. The Pointer spreading into online journalism has made it possible for Deltans in the diaspora to keep abreast of developments at home.

Delta State did more than keeping The Pointer in the smart, responsive and real time online journalism space, it has, in furtherance of its mandate to educate, inform and make governance both inclusive and interactive. created the office of the Executive Assistant on New Media. This is in recognition of the unique role online journalism and social media play in disseminating information.

Felix Ofou, a well-heeled journalist and member of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), heads this critical office. He explains the necessity and primary duty of his office.

"This office interfaces with GOCOP, Delta Online Publishers Forum
(DOPF), and online editors of the print media and other online publishers to ensure that activities of the state are accurately reported. Because of the spontaneous nature of online journalism, our brief is to tell our stories in simple language, which are effectively communicated through online journalists to the global audience. This has given the reportage of Delta government activities a head-start above other states, especially with the urgency with which we make information available to the online media," Ofou said.

He attributes the success recorded by his team in the online journalism space to the commitment and support of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.
"Our Governor has been supportive. As a digital, tech-minded 21st Century leader of a highly resourced and sophisticated state like Delta, Governor Oborevwori understands that information is a perishable product and is capable of going stale in a matter of hours; he has therefore been supportive of my office and matters of online journalism which has made our liaison with GOCOP and others in the online journalism ecosystem mutually beneficial," he added.

"The CBN's collaboration with GOCOP has been mutually beneficial, particularly in strengthening the bank's corporate communications and public engagement strategies. " — Central Bank of

Since his appointment, Ofou has brought innovative measures to enhance how the state makes the most of online journalism: "I was appointed Executive Assistant on New Media by His Excellency, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori, Governor of Delta State, in July 2023. We have a dedicated WhatsApp channel exclusively created for editors to have regular and fresh updates on the activities of the government. This is in addition to our online newspaper, Delta Revealed, and other social media platforms created for the dissemination of information on Delta State. We also have a YouTube channel, Delta Revealed TV, for the same objective - news dissemination. Needless to add that the State government-owned website, http://www.deltastate.gov.ng, remains a veritable tool for the dissemination of information."

Ofou noted that the advent of online journalism and social media has had both negative and positive consequences on all strata of society in Nigeria and the world at large. While acknowledging that Delta State is no exception, he stressed that rather than being weighed down by the negatives, "we have had to harness its benefits in the education of the
masses. We hope that with greater resilience, we will continue to impact on the people using online media."

And having realised the power of online media, the state government is leveraging this to promote digital literacy among the youth and young adults. For instance, Delta State, through the Ministry of Science and Technology, has created an Innovation Hub for the advancement of digital literacy. Six new computer hubs (centres) have been established to enhance computer skills application. In furtherance of this, skills acquisition, ICT-promotion debates, and essay writing competitions among secondary schools have also helped to bolster digital literacy in the state.

Ofou, in recognising the impact of online journalism, said Delta blazes the trail with the use of online media in promoting the economy. Delta economy is growing, including growth in IGR, attraction of investors in both the primary and service sectors and online journalism has been at the forefront of driving this growth, he said.

Continuing, he added that the state has an effective social register database from which beneficiaries for empowerment are drawn. Placement for skills acquisition, advertisement for vacancies, and collation of student names for payment of bursary are equally done, taking advantage of online and social media platforms. This has reduced human intrusion with its attendant bias and manipulation to the barest minimum, and has saved huge costs.

On the general impact of online journalism on the state, he concluded thus: "As in most states in Nigeria, Delta is not insulated from the activities of quacks that have permeated online journalism. The search for instant gratification has also not helped matters. Barely literate persons have taken to online publishing with no identifiable objective. But we are assured of the plethora of mainstream platforms like those of GOCOP members with qualified personnel, which help to dwarf the negative effect of the quacks.

We hope that effective regulation will be put in place without compromising free speech, citizen journalism, and online journalism, which remain a fulcrum of true democracy."

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has called on Nigerians to remain steadfast in their commitment to building a stronger and more united nation and said that the country’s economy has improved tremendousy.
Oborevwori in his Independence message signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, urged Nigerians to continue to support President Bola Tinubu’s "Renewed Hope Agenda" as well as his administration’s "MORE Agenda", which, he said, were designed to improve the living standards of the people.
He noted that his government was investing heavily in massive infrastructure upgrades across Delta State, advancing a power revolution through a renewable energy mix, and creating an enabling environment to attract foreign direct investments.
The efforts, he explained, were aimed at making life more meaningful for Deltans and residents and significantly boosting the state’s economy.
The governor also used the occasion to appeal to all ethnic groups in the state to embrace peace and remain united, stressing that peace was a prerequisite for sustainable development.
Oborevwori reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to inclusive governance and pledged to continue working for the progress and prosperity of all Deltans.

Abuja Leadership Centre Hosts Youth Leaders’ Clinic on Citizenship, Civic Responsibility in Delta

Calls for responsible, visionary, and patriotic leadership echoed strongly on Thursday, September 25, 2025, as the Abuja Leadership Centre, in collaboration with the TETFUND Centre of Excellence in Public Governance and Leadership, University of Abuja, hosted a one-day Youth Leaders’ Clinic at Dennis Osadebay University, Asaba.

The clinic, themed “Empowering the Next Generation Leaders”, brought together senior prefects and student leaders from across Delta, Edo, and Bayelsa States, with a focus on nurturing civic responsibility, accountability, and ethical leadership in young people.

Delivering a goodwill message on behalf of the Delta State Government, the Commissioner for Secondary Education, Mrs. Rose Ezewu, commended the organisers for what she described as a “timely and laudable initiative.”

“At a time when our nation is in need of responsible, visionary, and patriotic leaders, such engagements are crucial in shaping the character and mindset of our young people,” Ezewu said.

She urged student leaders to embrace service as the foundation of leadership and to carry lessons from the clinic back to their schools and communities.

On behalf of the Ministry, she reaffirmed Delta State’s commitment to programmes that build leadership capacity and civic consciousness among students.

Highlighting the pedigree of the Abuja Leadership Centre, its Director, Professor Philip Dahida, explained that the centre has become a hub for advanced leadership studies and policy research, producing graduates who now serve as political leaders, bureaucrats, and senior military officers.

He emphasized that the centre’s mission is not just academic but also geared toward finding practical solutions to Nigeria’s leadership and governance challenges.

He cited examples of graduates whose research tackled critical governance issues, including the need to hold both leaders and followers accountable for Nigeria’s development challenges.

“The centre is producing leaders who are not just certificated but capable of providing solutions to policy depletion, leadership quagmires, and governance bottlenecks,” he said.

In his remarks, retired Deputy Inspector General of Police, Marvel Akpoyibo, stressed that Nigeria’s underdevelopment is primarily a leadership problem.

He advocated for early training of young people in leadership values, saying: “We are catching them young to imbibe traits that will make them better citizens of our dear country. With good leadership, development will be rapid, and Nigeria can compete globally.”

Earlier, the Coordinator of the Abuja Leadership Centre for the Edo, Delta, and Bayelsa contingent, Mrs. Winifred Elikwu, explained that the programme was designed to establish the link between citizenship, participation, and leadership.

“Citizenship gives you the values, participation gives you the practice, while leadership is the result,” she said, stressing that true leadership is citizenship in action.

The clinic combined lectures, group deliberations, and feedback exercises to ensure participants internalized the lessons. Schools were also tasked to present what their student leaders had learned at their morning assemblies and submit recorded clips as part of feedback to the centre.

The one-day event, described by participants as highly impactful, ended with a renewed call for young leaders to embrace service, integrity, and civic responsibility as the building blocks of national development.

Gov. Oborevwori Felicitates Senator Oluremi Tinubu At 65

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has congratulated Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, on her 65th birth anniversary, describing her as a woman of grace, compassion and exemplary leadership.

Governor Oborevwori in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, in Asaba, extolled the sterling qualities of Senator Tinubu, noting her remarkable contributions to nation-building, empowerment of women and youths, as well as her advocacy for good governance over the years.

He particularly lauded the First Lady for her unwavering commitment to the welfare of Nigerians through the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI).
